I believe this episode was to represent Buffy's desire of wanting to get away from it all. As Dark Willow said, it was Buffy's "Comfy Alternative".
Then again theres a whole nother perspective that Buffy really is in a mental hospital this entire time and that Sunnydale was all in her head. But thats kind of why I like this show so much, theres always so much symbolism and ways of interpreting one episode.
he left it open-ended. she did go to an institution before she moved to sunnydale, so supposedly she's still there, and all of sunnydale has been an illusion. but since the institution was invented (by him) after the show started, you can interpret this as her being stuck in her memory/illusion, while in the comics, the asylum was real (but you can assume it was only temporary)
I think of them as seprate dimensions, and somehow the demon enabled buffy to have flashes of herself in another dimension where she was in the nuthouse. Thats just how i think of it :3
Dig a little deeper in your reading and research and you'll find that the story of "Normal Again" was at one point considered for the series finale... proof positive that Joss is evil and likes to screw with people's heads.
But then, isn't that why we love his work so much? ;)
i like this episode cuz it kinda shows how, deep down, buffy wishes she could go back to simpler times. i think we can all relate to that. And the song fits perfectly!! great job :)
Sunnydale was the real part cuz at one point Spike says something like that demons got her trippin like a ken rush film festival.....anyone thats done their share of LSD knows how easily it is to get lost between realities and to go into your mind. I got chills-reminded me of a bad trip from forever ago...
one of my favourite cocktails. A shot of joss whedon and a dash of amy lee. this reminds me of a show called st elsewhere where the final episode revealed the whole series was the product of an autistic boy named Tommy Westphall
one of the best episodes of the show, probably the best one in series6.
The producer said its up to the viewer to decide which they think is the reality, for me especially when the doctor said she came back in the summer the mental hospital was real.
I agree, I "hope" that the Sunnydale reality is the real one, but when the doctor referred to her temorary awakening in the summer, he was obviously talking about the time when Buffy died after "The Gift", and then her Sunnydale friends brought her back. That kind of lead to the possibility that perhaps the mental hospital actually is the reality. But it also feels wrong to just forget about all of the adventures and memories we've had with Buffy and just toss them off as crazy delusions
@chrcoluk it cudnt hav been real bcuz wen buffy was resurrected, she claimed that she was 'in heaven and she was ripped out by her frends'. i dnt think that a mental hospital wud b considered a 'heaven'...
I liked the video and really loved Normal Again. Poor Buffy. I can't imagine having to spend three weeks in a mental institution. No wonder she was afraid of spending the night in a hospital until the end of KBD. If I was her I'd be wary of which world was real too. She was suffering from severe depression from being ripped out of Heaven and her only solace had been sex with a soulless demon. I loved that she got to say goodbye to her mother.
This is my 2nd fav episode of season 6 (Bargaing Part 2 comes 1st) It creeped me out at the end and made me question if the institution thingy is real, if they had that as the last episode ever then I think that would have really creeped fans out. lol Awsome Vid!!!1
I really love this show, but this episode.. I hate to say it but I really wish I didn't watch it.. it changed my whole perspective of buffy. I mean it makes me so confused cause now everytime I watch an episode Im gonna be like "Shes Just Dreaming This". Idk i wish they would of said something like that the mental instatution wasn't real. Cause it makes me sad.. One part of me says that it is real ( the mental instatution ) because it explains so much! but idk..
Joss actually confirmed that it was all just a dream. He was surprised because to him it seemed so obvious that it was a dream, and that the sad part was that a mental institution was more comforting to buffy than living again. It was supposed to be an indication of her state of depression/mind after being resurrected. :) worry not! buffy the slayer of vampyres is real... er.. you know, real to herself. :P
@DuxRUs Didn't he leave it open-ended? I thought I read somewhere that he said 'it could all be the dream of a sick girl in a mental hospital, who knows?' or something like that. I don't know - I'd rather believe the hospital was the dream!
loved it, just one comment; i wish you would have used the part where she is reaching out to her mom and trying to figure out if she is real for the lyrics that say if i try to touch her then i bleed. it was a direct scene reference, sorry for the rant. but other than that, great vid.
i HATE HATE HATE this episode!!!!!!!!!! i liked it until just a bit ago when i finally understood it!! They made it so that the whole slaying thing really is fake, because online on the summery of this episode is says that in the end she gives into her illness, and i HATE it i still love buffy but i never look at it the same anymore. Can someone please comment to me and convince me otherwise cuz i really dont like it this way :) thanx
That's not how they made it at all. They made it so the viewer can decide if it's all fake or not, they never made a decision in the end, they leave it undecided. Don't believe everything you read on the internet.
Buffy chose in that episode and believed Sunnydale was real, isn't that enough?
Honestly, people getting so worked up over this ep proves it was good hehe. Thumbs up to the writers, actors and joss whedon ^___^ Arigato!
yeah, i'm with lilithe, she chose sunnydale over the "real world". when they said she is gone, or something like that towards the end, it doesn't mean buffy is dead, it means she chose not to believe in that world, which is why they lost her. her belief in the world kept her there, when she didn't anymore, she was considered "dead".
when they said she's gone they didn't mean she's dead they meant they lost her like her body is here but her mind is somewhere else like people in mental institution, they are physically there but mentally they are somewhere else in this case in Sunnydale...
@akivi622 Its ok we have all had times when we wonder if this world is real. Buffy is real in the sense that the demon spiked her to make her think she was dreamin being a slayer. If she had just started seeing other side without explainasion then maybe a concern but she fine and out there slaying im sure the buffyverse will live on in our hearts and minds
@akivi622 I know how you feel, when i think back on buffy i always try to figure out if she is actually crazy or if it's actually just the demon poision shes sick with. its super confusion lol
i think the bit were shes in a mental hospital isent real because when the demon dies the spell thing wears off and then the hullucination dies. i'm not sure if that made any sense but thats what i think
this episode confused me to death. i thought it was interesting, but in a way i didn't like this episode because i dont want to think buffy is really imgaining everything.
w/e, i'm just sticking with the hallucinations in the hospital weren't real, cuz thats how i want it to be
I hated this episode.Ill go so far as to say I loathed it..I still cant make sense of it....It cheapend everything. Now all I can think of when I watch Buffy is that, its all in her head..I HATE IT when shows do that.. I still love the Buffy Series though. I just try to forget this ep was ever made.
This is a great episode and a sad but beautiful song. Good job. The only thing that bugs me about this episode is its soooo mind boggling and seeing them all hurting sucks. But the video is GREAT and so is the episode.
i love your video and this song was good. this episode confused me for awhile it also made me quite mad but was good bc of course all the buffy shows where...
I love this ep too. It's probs my fav out of Buffy lol. I love how it's open at the end for you to deside if she went back to her comatoes state or if she really was in Sunnydale. I read that Joss wanted to make sure it was like that. Kewl vid!!
It's between "Hush" and "Normal Again" for me. I liked "Normal Again" because it put the entire series up for question. Was any of it real or all in Buffy's head? You decide. Good stuff!!! I LOVED "Hush" though because it was the ONLY episode in the series to scare me. That shit was so good!!! Thinking about it now, if it was all in her head then did any of the "Angel" series really happen? OMG! I gotta stop before I go too deep lol
Entengle, I want to know why you say this is a good introduction to buffy. I have my opinions. So send me a message via youtube because I'd love to hear what you have to say. :D
Can someone help me wat is this episode about!

Reality is, at best, a theory... Buffy and Amy
Lee share a fractured understanding that leaves
nothing proven. I believe this episode to be a
possibly perfect intro (to initiate newbies for
their 1st BtVS experience). I KNOW very few will
agree with me, but I HAD to assert my view here.
