The brown center cube is made from plastic. I have no idea if you could paint it although I think it would be difficult. Finding safe, non toxic, non peeling paint will be a challenge however your local paint store specialist may be able to help you there. I don't know of anyone who has done that yet!

What is the brown wood effect cube made from? Would it be sprayable/paintable in any way?

i love my fluval chi! my petstore wasnt using their used store model, so they sold it to me for $30! works perfectly!!!

The water is crystal clear unless you have over fed your fish, over stocked your tank, or have left the light on 24 hours a day. Our Fluval Chi which is set up in the store has been flawless! The trick is not to over stock, use a few aquatic plants, don't place it in a window and do frequent water changes of 1/3 every week.  Your tank will be clear and clean! Use the old water to water your house plants! The Fluval Chi evaporates more than a covered tank so make sure you top it up regularly.
