joe was a hell of a player i love goin to every ou home game and chattin with him at the sooner club hes funny as hell and a really good person to be around
With all due respect, I get the impression that I've watched and know more about football than you give me credit for. It's not accurate to say that "everyone else" is convinced he was the best and most electrifying player ever. He's an all-time great, on the level of some of the guys you mentioned (I've seen them all, too). He's just not THE best and most electrifying of all-time, in my opinion. That's all I've been saying. I don't think that should be too controversial of a stance.
Evidently you neither played, watched, or owned a TV in the 70's. Lil Joe could do things other backs couldn't, literally!!! Greatness leaves lasting impressions ala "Michael Jordan."
No. The thing is, I played, watched and owned a TV in other decades, too, and that gave me a chance to see other players who were better and more electrifying. I just don't think he was the best or most electrifying player ever. I apologize if that makes me sound narrow-minded. Very good, electrifying, All America worthy, a true superstar, etc., - just not the best. And I'm not slighting or insulting the guy by not calling him the best ever.
Let's just say I can think of at least a dozen or so among the all-time greats that I would rate ahead of him. I don't see the point in naming them, since people on here would obviously disagree no matter who I named. Joe would be in my top 15 or so. Don't get me wrong at all, though - you're right when you say he could do things other backs couldn't. He was certainly spectacular. I agree with Switzer, who said that Joe would have won the Heisman at least once if not for OU's probational TV ban
I think if you had gotten to see Lil Joe play, instead of these slowed down highlight films which aren't his best plays, you would convinced like everyone else. Since I'm probably a little older than you are and I too was a great running back, here is just a few Great Backs past and present on Lil Joe's level, no particular order: Barry Sanders, Gayle Sayers, O J Simpson, Marshall Faulk, Eric Dickerson, Billy Simms, Tony Dorsett, Bo Jackson, Marcus Allen, Thurman Thomas, L. T. A. P. and R. B.
Lil Joe's feet were super quick, which enabled him to have electrifying moves, I know because I used to emulate him. From one Great Back to Another, he was my Idol.
Lil Joe was the most exciting player EVER in college football. I say this unbiased, even though at the time I was a huge Oklahoma fan and went there for a semester and subsequently left and moved on to a different uni. This guy could fake out his own shadow!
His punt return vs. Mizzou is unbelievable, hope they have that on tape here. Make a video of all his exciting plays. The hurdle vs UT DB, etc. Unreal player...silver shoes and all!
I'm sure OSU fans would like to forget how silly and embarassed their defense looked in this game against OU!

Even as a Longhorn fan, much respect to little joe. Darrell Royal said he was like smoke through a key hole...

He was very good, but not the best or most electrifying player ever.

Joe Washington in the open field....forget about it. Those 1970's OU backfields were amazing. Pruitt, Washington, Sims, many others.
