I was only eleven when the towers fell, and I remember where I was when I heard, but I was so young that it didn't really mean anything to me, I had no idea, no concept, of terrorism or the gist of what was going on. All I remember was these two towers smoking, fire, and then huge plumes of smoke as the towers fell, one shortly after the other. Somehow my random youtube searching has landed me here. Now I see the terror, now I understand. I'm twenty now, and I guess I forgot. Now I won't ever.

That can work in some cases, but if your surrounding air is nothing but toxic (poison or dust or whatever) then you won't have long before your 'filter' just re-filters your re-used oxygen, which has now been exposed to the toxic, and you'd suffocate. In a case like this, you wouldn't have long at all. Around someone smoking, you can last a long time. :)
