The Jam split up too early, I always wonder what could have been, three more LP's ?? Same with The Smiths!! It's probably for the best - finished at the top!!!!
Though we keep piling up the building blocks, the structure never seems to get any higher. Because we keep kicking out the foundations and stand useless while our lives fall down...................Superb lyrics, just simply superb
My concerns for the world when this record came out were echoed by a guy seven years older and from a similar suburban point of view, mixed with working class righteousness. And yet, a whole world away. The Jam 'The Gift' was a very important LP for me at seventeen. Thanks Paul, Bruce, & Rick.
the mighty and powerful performances of THE JAM are a delight to watch. I met paul and chatted for an hour with him and we talked bout the jam a lot.He says his fav album was SOUND EFFECTS.Mine was SETTING SONS but he could see why i liked that album.......but running on the spot is 1 of my fav album tracks.
Best live band I've ever seen. I love the Clash, the Who, Springsteen but the Jam were so amazing live. Only band that came out for another encore after the promoter turned the lights up to get fans out the door.
As british bands go, weller's influences - the Beatles, Who, Faces and Kinks were also quite well known outside USA and considered quite good. there are a whole host of post punk/new wave bands (eg joy division smiths clash etc) also highly regarded from these modest shores. Well worth a look.
"you thought that i was a devil, but i'm an angel waiting for my wings" said that to one of my teachers in 82. Still got expelled !! Best Jam songs ever
sirkettle, yes I believe Bruce was in Stiff Little Fingers, but if I'm correct now he´s in a band that plays Jam stuff with Rick. It´s called "From The Jam".
just because i smoke a joint , do i have anything in common with you, probably not, heaven knows i met a few smokers, what about because i loved the jam, do i have anything in common. When is the general strike lol
i had a boating blaazer, but i always thought i was the punk in a suit. punk is a usa fasion item, i ant one of them. your spot on about u2. they will follow lol, i communicate with somebody for one second,i think thats the start and my dad was a taxman lol, i saw them alli pally 1982 i was 13 , weller trod on my hand, i did not wash it for a week.even if pauls sold out , he has laid the platform, the orwell in the jam is no lie. I am Irish and have been a fan of The Jam since they hit the scene. I was a mod complete with Vespa, Parka, Side Vents etc. Loved every second esp. scooter runs. The music appealed to everyone in shitholes with no rosey future whether English, Irish or whatever. I also like U2 but they said nothing to me in my teens. God bless The Jam.
anger is far better than apathy, cheers for giving me my anger back now im going to use it. im an english boy on an english street, u2 r p i ss poor , no rebellion in them, id been a viking berzerka if i lead the vikings out playing the jam, have it man ,have it. we could change norfolk to jam folk, i get my politics off this, at 40 i will protest.
Same here,I am an old woman of 40 now but had a very wonderful older sister who took me to see The Jam aged 12 and 4 more times after this. Really did say everything me felt at the time and a real snapshot of what life was like back then can be found in their lyrics. I annoy the hell out of my kids by playing The Jam whilst doing housework must be unnerving to hear your mum singing & swearing loudly to these songs...excellent stuff
Fucking brilliant! Keep on keeping on into your 50s and onwards. And yes I agree that he spoke to a lot of us at that certain time in our lives. I wouldn't say he saved my life, but he helped me in my English test when I recalled "Rise like lions from your slumber in unvanquishable number"" in a question about Shelly. If it hadn't been for Sound Affects I might not have got that one right. :-)
Wow, another awesome live Jam post! I love to blast Happy Together in my car and sing it at the top of my lungs as I slam the gas to the floor! Really I do, from an American aged 44. Awesome stuff thanks a lot!
i cant believe the texts below have mentined the Police, these are two definately different bands. Weller and Sting are both genuis but nothing will ever rock as much as the jam in many diferent tunes. weller is the godfather and will never stop. he is as big as elvis his legend will live on
i know, could not believe these people, still they will be telling us Tom Jones and Justin Timberlake should be considered together next! haha The Jam loved it first time round and takes me right back now to my scooter owning days!
Why does You Tube bring out such silly comparisons from people?? The Jam and the Police?? What?? The Skids and Green Day?? In the case of the latter, just because a band covers another's song there doesn't have to be a 'Green Day are better than the Skids' debate. Get back to the playground and get a musical education you silly people.....
Unfortunately they were "bigger" than the Jam (much as it pains me to say it). Just because of their popularity in the USA, the Jam could never break the USA. It's the same as U2, I hate the fact that they are so big when they haven't done anything that special - I wonder if it's the Irish connection that made them so big in the USA?
Agree, Jackd36 - it's probably the Irish connection that made U2 so big in the States (I'm a Yank, though ashamed of that fact insofar as the Jam's lack of popularity is concerned). The Jam were far greater than U2 ever was, even if they weren't "bigger."
A truely great band the JAM, But you think they would have put the microphones up higher for the backing singers. Poor fuckers must have put there backs out.
This is a message for all the Jam fans I travelled around with watching the band and my long lost bro Derek!
Fantastic to watch when they started with a raw sound in the late 70s - but great memories of them being at some BIG venues in the early 80s doing mature stuff like this!
Great stuff, and by '82 expanding their sonic palette like all visionary bands. "The Gift" is an unsung classic LP, for me their best (though at only 32 mins, The Great Depression should've been on it too!) One question: why wasn't this footage included on The Jam DVD? Thanks for posting this, aceface
they kept getting better and better; lots of folks said they were nothing but derivative, but weller grew as a songwriter by leaps and bounds with each successive single and album and packed the band in at 24.
Tosh. Seen 'From The Jam'? Perhaps you should. The Jam are a truly great band - and certainly one of the finest that Britain has ever produced. Whether the greatest boils down to taste - something which you are apparently lacking pal.
to say they were the best band ever is dumb. You haven't listened to much music in that case. The other two were always replaceable, something they found out later.
I'm either American or Brithish but from my point, America does have some legends as Elvis Pressley,Chuk Berry,..but the UK's got the Sex pistols and every great punk band..And nowadays the brithish scene is much more attractive with for example Arctic Monkeys, the Fratellis..and Amercica's got only "kids" bands as sum 41 or the offspring..the only good band Green Day is becoming too commercial and "kind"..What a shame !..but we all love rock music
ACE one of the best bands ever at the top of there game. such a shame weller called it a day and spent to many years out in the cold with sub standard style council crap. he could have kept the jam going for a good few years more than he did. long live the jam
He didn't need to, that was the point. He could have kept it going, and when the going got really tough, going broke etc, he could have done what every other band does;- reformed and milked it, but his heart wasn't in it and he stayed true to his beliefs. He's an honest, real musician, a true hero.
He didn't need to, that was the point this means what? he went broke because the music the SC was turning out was crap and no matter how great weller was with the jam he could not produce the goods with the SC. he could not reform not then not now not ever because he has always said this will never happen [an honest real musician a true hero]I would back you up there but my point still stands its a shame the jam split and we lost weller as he flogged a dead horse which was the SC.
I agree... The UK has for a long time copied America, but occasionally improves on it ie: The Beatles, Stones and Who... Still a load of tat here though...
What did you have before The Beatles that was even close to being as good? America produced a more the amazing musician with Jimi but for almost all of his time playing music he lived and worked in the Uk?
dont be neive! jimi hendrix came here to be noticed america ignored him and failed him, there's no way you produced him, he never forgot that... he wanted to be buried here but you took his corpse back, what a surprise. before the beatles we had shit loads of talent.. do some reasearch loser! you wish you were english!
lennon had his time.. weller was and still the guvnor..

ACE one of the best bands ever at the top of there game. such a shame weller called it a day and spent to many years out in the cold with sub standard style council crap. he could have kept the jam going for a good few years more than he did. long live the jam
stiner007 4 years ago

America produced a more the amazing musician with Jimi but for almost all of his time playing music he lived and worked in the Uk?
welhamboi 4 years ago
We had the very things that the Beatles liked; Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Elvis Presley, etc.

dont be neive! jimi hendrix came here to be noticed america ignored him and failed him, there's no way you produced him, he never forgot that... he wanted to be buried here but you took his corpse back, what a surprise. before the beatles we had shit loads of talent.. do some reasearch loser! you wish you were english!
