  • Hands down, my favorite male vocalist of this or any generation. As a tenor/baritone myself, his smokey style and unique phrasing have inspired me for years. A voice like no other: tobacco smoke, heartbreak and fine aged scotch, Beautiful.

  • Oh!Singing timeless.

  • Usually smoking doesn't help the vocals, but in this case he gets a pass. Wowie Zowie.

  • Goodness! Beautiful. And Jim Hall on guitar.

  • Strange, chaotic free-jazz backup band, beautiful, quirky baritone lead vocals. Am I in Heaven?

  • does it get any better then johnny singing

  • If he were only still with us. Will we ever see his equal again? Very thankful for his magnificent recordings.

  • Hartman sings this lovely piece beautifully:)

  • One of the best Crooners that ever lived. Unsung did not get the props that he deserved.

  • just perfect.

  • Johnny Hartman, my favourite singer.

I always feel sad though that no recording of this song ever captures the mystic, menacing quality of the Henry Mancini version. This song needed a Chet Baker to sing it.

  • @drongovids

Very thoughtful comment. I like this version

too,but the idea of Chet singing this gives me shivers!

  • @ladypodtron My dear, did you just compare the dulcet baritone of Johnny Hartman to Chet Baker? Oh my! ;0)

  • @SuscioNegro

    Don't get me wrong here,

Johnny Hartman's voice is like no other.

No point trying to compare the unique vocal style of

Chet Baker to the masterful Johnny Hartman.

By the way, in my humble opinion ,Johnny owns

    "My One and Only Love."

    Cheers!

  • @ladypodtron He owns Lush Life as well.

  • The phrasing and the deep pitch of his voice is amazing, sounds like he's whispering in my ear, each note cascading through my body. Oh, !

  • I'm amazed Johnny doesn't get more attention on these posts !

  • @mickyblue247

What is more amazing is that there is no well known singer of Hartman's comparable talent thriving today. Mahogany? Please...not to my ear. Where are Eckstein, Prysock, Williams, Rawls et al today and in this era?

  • @Rams4ever Billy Eckstine, apologies for mispelling BE's name

  • I've always loved this recording.
