I just discovered a video of Jose Marie Chan singing it live as a duet w/ Dr. Warfe T. Engracia (singing doctor) w/ a long intro stating that Jose Marie Chan's grand uncle Fernando "Nandoy" Alfon wrote the song (apparently the lyrics) ...so could it be that Mr. Mil (Emilio) Villareal wrote the music and Alfon wrote the lyrics.....watch?v=aH2Ze0p6w10
growing up in the Phil I remember this song being sung by Celeste Dadap, wife of Jerry Dadap, composer/conductor whenever my family visited them. I did not understand the lyrics then but was always moved by the passion in their rendition. Many years later I would try to translate it using a web translator and wrote a poem.
Mil Villareal - real name, Emilio - wrote the song Kahibulongan, and not Nanding Alfon.
I was one of the musicians, together with Mr. Villareal himself and his son Edward, Dr. Rene Sitoy and Lino Monares, who re-recorded this song two years ago. This song is one of his other compositions that we recorded in a new CD called "Usa Ka Higayon" that will be released soon.

@TonySitoy @TonySitoy I'm not sure why but Universal's Visayan Greatest Hits Vol. 1 has this song sung by Jose Mari Chan. Nandoy Alfon is credited along with Villareal. The Mabuhay Singers' album Kadingding Sa Balitao also has this song but it only credits Villareal. I'm not sure why this is. Do you know why Alfon is connected to this song? Also when and where can I buy Usa Ka Higayon?
@TonySitoy , Boss, nadungog ko ang inyong version sa "Veronica" nga gi post sa Villareal Family website. Nindot kaayo, sir. How do I get a copy of your CD "Usa Ka Higayon"?
...Both Tio Maning and Tio Mil are called "Maestro" by their peers and are very accomplished musicians/composers... ...the Villareal clan in Cebu are widely admired and respected family of musicians...
when i was a kid , i prefer to listen and sing english songs and idolized western singers and groups(no one's to blame and nothing wrong with it)..now , and thanks to the power of the internet, i embrace with passion all filipino songs-visayan, tagalog, ilocano etc..pagkanindot sa atong mga huni..kay ganda ng ating musika as the song aptly goes..nakakalimot kahit sandali sa mga ibat ibang suliranin at karamdaman(kaluluwa at katawan)labi na sa mga nahilayo sa ilang mga hinugugma..mabuhay !!
What a classic and timeless piece. I'm now starting to love and appreciate these old Visayan kundimans. Helps me remember and be proud of my roots (I'm a Boholano-Cebuano mix). I just found out last week my mom knows this song very well and also used to sing this when she was in high school back in the 1950's.
Viva la cultura y la musica Visayan. Anyone knows kon asa ko makapalit aning album? Muchas gracias.
I bought the tape for this from villarmusic[dot]com. But they are unreliable and unprofessional. The best thing to do to find this type of music is to actually go back to the Philippines to old record shops, if they exist. I've actually never been to the Philippines so I wouldn't know where they are.
you've never been to the Philippines and you know all these songs? I have to thank you personally because i am looking for the lyrics of most of these songs. it's been a long time that i didn't hear them. I stayed toooo long in Manila before going abroad.
Sagdi lag panahon ni mampor, bai. Di bitaw malalis nga maanindot gihapon kaayo bisag caraan. Labing importante nga dili hikalimtan ang atong cultura nga Bisaya.
tiempo ma ning mampor ni,pero maayo kay mobalik atong panumdoman sa kanhiay, too ka ug dili mao ra gihapon kantahon sa harana(talingting, siquijor)pagkakaron, what a lovely song.
I usually hear my mother singing this unforgettable song in our barong barong (dampa)in the early 60´s in the Philippines and many thanks for sharing this music.
But just curious: why did you put up that many folk songs in the info table? That's practically the entire popular reportoire: are those your favorite songs?
I also like it that you linked our folk music to Mediterranean and Latin genres like Greek (Nana Mouskouri), Portuguese fado (Amalia Rodrigues) and flamenco.

The composition is credited to Mil Villareal and Fernando Alfon. Mil Villareal is the composer of Bisan Sa Damgo Lang.

@toiletholder Both Tio Maning and Tio Mil are brothers....

I think that Mil Villareal is the composer of Dahong Laya as well. But the credit says "Maning Villareal." I'm not sure if Mil is short for Manuel.

Dahong Laya is by Maning the older brother of Manong Mil. Maestro passed away already, while Mil now resides in Canada.
