  • Incredible amazing Grissom you are the best out there..

  • back when he was with Joe Ely, he did some amazing solos. I missed Jessie Taylor, who had a bluesy driving style, so was suspicious when he joined Ely, but remember his first long solo in a set at Gruene - the entire place went nuts. Glad he's done so well since, but wish he'd rejoin Ely for a show or two, along with Lloyd Maines and some of the other alumni.

  • Too bad SRW never did a hot licks video. Just came to my mind cause' David had a little SRW vide here.

  • This guy is awesomme :-)

  • Sooooo good! It looks so easy for him! Haha! Sooooo hard for the rest of us! I realy like the tune.

That drummer could lay off the cymbals a little bit though!

  • Awesome!

  • I haven't heard this in awhile.... but this song still rocks! Its one of those songs you just don't outgrow.

  • @warh0rn what song is this?????!!!! i want to play it with my band but idk what its called

  • @jacktheguitarman its just a Jam. He is making it up as he goes. Yeah he is that good.

  • Wow! I never heard of this guy, but l was looking at a Guitar Player magazine from 1991 and it showed him holding this guitar in a PRS ad. Great player!

  • michael phelps

  • Just bought the PRS DGT Gold Top guitar. I can't play like him, but now I can pretend! Go David!!

  • You hearing Dorian mode a lot in this.

  • nice work. pretty hot guitar too. but maybe needs a bit more high end out of those pickups

  • I got to meet David Grissom at the James Burton Guitar Festival. Super nice guy!!

  • watch harvey brooks @2:53, as he works the shit out of THAT ONE NOTE ! !

  • give this man a band with good singer and he could be the next zep

but of course being what he is now I am sure he's gotta be happy

he always sounds like he is having fun and plays with so much soul and that old hard work like attraction

i love his harmony - it is up there at the top

the steak, the hot plate, and the knife to back it up !!!

  • can someone tell me what that sorta signature chord of his he hits from time to time is ? See 2:33 for example. Some kind of blues 7th ? I dig that chord almighty...what a cat would love to jam with him anytime.

  • Yeah. He's p[laying an AM7 over the B bass line. The song is in B mixolydian which allows you to super impose an AM7 chord over that. Discard the third of the A chord and only play the root, 5th and Major 7th. Try that with a B in the bass and you'll hear it.

  • fuckin dirts magurt

  • Dave G is a monster! Not only does he have technique, but he has the emotion flowing through every note he plays. I have everything Storyville has put out including a dbl live cd and dvd. But Storyville also had Dave Holt on guitar. He and Dave G had great chemistry. Both are great guitarist. Gotta love em! Great players!!!

  • sometimes when he hits the notes, it allmost sounds like if the sound where being played backwards (like when hendrix does that on final recordings).. How is that?.. Is it because he's added a LOT of compression?

  • It looks like he's 'flemencking' his notes, which give a pseudo

    echo/delay sound.

  • He is also my favorite guitarist... as far as what I wish to emulate. The guitar in the vids? He always played a PRS McCarty Tremolo. Which is basicaly what the DGT model is but with Jumbo Frets and the normal PRS shape neck and his custom design pickups, tuners etc...

  • Wow!

  • Saw him at the 09 Dallas Guitar Show. He totally kicked ass. I shook his hand after the show and the looked at me like a deer in headlights.

  • brilliant.

  • David - you da man!!! Amazing tone & playing - gotta find this on DVD...

  • I got to talk to this dude and watch him up front and center at a small clinic. He's from Kentucky, and that EXACT tone follows him through every guitar and amp.

  • is that a PRS?

  • yup

  • PRS DGT i think.

  • woooo heavy saalick riff king

  • I saw him play at Antones last year and man what a performance!

  • That is some balls tone.

  • 4 minutes of pure-controlled fire

  • KICK ASS TUFF PLAYING!!

  • David's work in the Joe Ely Band is awsome . I wish someone would post those killer Austin City Limits shows they recorded .

  • Dave just released a new cd 2009 - The Cd features 11 brand new songs. Check it out! Chris Layton on drums!!! I've just ordered ;-)

  • What an incredible player and tone. Sounds like his amp is on fire, like Hendrix. Amazing stuff. he's new to me but i'm hooked. Anyone know what amp he uses?

  • Here I believe he's using a Matchless Clubman.

  • Yeah, you're right !

Every good rock-blues guitarist, plays fired like Hendrix if he plays with a bass player and a drummer like those ones !

  • shet this guy is good!

  • Yeah, one of the "secrets" is the fingerficking.... awesome feel

  • He sure got a fan all over in the Netherlands , Groningen, What an awesome guitarist!!

  • Fuckin rockin' out, awesome

  • looking for friends

    great vid pY

  • sounds like eric johnson...but more in rock attitude

  • most badass thing i have ever seen

  • It's cool, but more background music. The pedal tone thing gets old fast tho'. Too much hybrid picking can do that.

  • This is so great. What ever happened to rock like this? All we have now is shit like the Jonas Brothers which is getting pumped into kids minds that it is true rock.

  • good god... there are others? like... others who still know... [rock]... come, join the rebelion! maybe we can get enough to end [the jonas brothers].. just maybe.

(edited quote from synergy beta 1)

  • Amen :]

  • It's a song called "Wings Won't Let Me Fly" done by Storyville. This version, though not the best recording quality, definitely has much better energy. David throws some monster licks in this version.

  • This is ROCK !!!

  • farout this guy has some class

  • I'd love to have is style of playing the blues ...its got so much flavor and texture. its very hard to recreate his playing tone and licks.

  • e's a bit good............ give it some lad

  • Are they just jammin or does that song have a name? I just got into David Grissom, so I don't know too much about his music yet, I just think his style is killer.

  • It's "just" a jam ;-)

  • @phisterlogsauce

Actually, the opening lick & groove are from "Wings Won't Let Me Fly"

  • Actually Dave is jamming on one of his songs here: from Storyville, called "Wings won't let me Fly". Get Live At Antone's by Storyville! Then get everything else they ever recorded! Dynamite guitar, vocals, rhythm section: a true supergroup.

    Zig

  • 10 stars.

  • that is a PRS McCarthy. it was made for Grissom but for some reason they called it the McCarthy. He now has a Grissom Model available in four colors but they are back ordered for like a year from PRS.

  • It's a McCarty (not McCarthy) named for Ted McCarty who was Paul's mentor as well as president of Gibson. He was involved in developing the Les Paul model (probably more than Les) as well as the 335 and others.

  • I went to high school with David in Louisville. Great player.

  • what is the exact model of guitar hes playing?

I know its a prs but what kind?

  • Looks like a Custom 24.

  • It's a McCarty Trem. mid-90's if memory serves. They don't make those anymore, and they're getting harder to pick up on the 'bay. There is the new DGT Sig model, which is built to David's specs.

  • its a PRS DGT - the David Grissom signature model.

  • It's not a DGT, because the video is too old, and it doesn't have the correct knob configuration. It's not a 22 fretter, so it's not a McCarty trem. It's a Custom 24 Goldtop. Do a search for his '91 PRS ad, and you will see him playing this guitar.

  • You are correct.

  • True

  • Does anyone know the name of the tune David is playin?

  • Does anyone out there know what effects he is using--I like his nice raspy distortion/overdrive sound?

  • oh, and when did my 8th grade chem lab teacher start playing bass?!

    haha, j/k, love harvey brooks!

  • Cool!:D

  • cmon...

before youtube made 8 yr olds into post-suzuki wunderkunds, all we had were arlen's awesome vhs videos, which made me the player i am today. and yes, i owned this one, too!

btw, sauce, any chance of uploading the very first jam dave does on tape one? thats my fav!

  • Haven't got the no. 1 tape - my friend has it - so maybe ;-)

  • Wow...just killer!

  • he is the bomb....Very good playing.

  • does he teach send web site

  • WHAT A NICE BLOODY GUITARIST ! Timing, sound and hybrid picking ! I like SO MUCH !!!

  • hella fuckin sick

  • Dudes got my guitar..... Awsome jam

  • Damn nice

  • If you look closely at 1:32 and throughout the video you can see he's playing through a Matchless head and a Marshall cab. Although the PRS is nice, that Matchless head is a hand made head that is thousands of dollars and the tone that is possible with it is simply amazing.

  • You know Dave does have a CD of his own out. It came out earlier this year. It's called Loud Music and you can get it at Waterloo Records (in the store or online). Everyone ought to buy it, if only to give Dave a few bucks for kicking ass for so many years now.

  • wow, what a cool lick/sound in the beginning...

  • Wow! I need that amp.

  • Good one - thanks for the post - Neat - Tone, Taste and Tenacity

  • The Matchless head with a Marshall cab is a SICK combination.

  • Bet so.

    Cheers.

  • DG's fantastic but he could use a lesson from the master, Joe Bonamassa. If I could play like either of these guys I could die with a smile on my face.

  • Joe has nothing on David. I've seen them both multiple time. It's just a matter of taste, they're both fantastic. But Joe could learn something from David, like what not to play. Just enjoy both!

  • I stumbled onto this video and I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment that Joe B "could learn what not to play." Sometimes (many times, I think) "less" is "more."

  • Dave is not a Texan. He is from Louisville, Kentucky.

  • Correct.

  • Storyille has a new CD/DVD Live at Antone's, must have for Grissom fans. Check it out...

  • awsome he produces the best sound out of that gutair

  • lovely sound on that electrick gutair

  • grissom, and storyville are awesome

  • They are fantastic!!

  • They really need to put his instructional video out in DVD

  • Let me tell you, this is a BAD man. I played drums in several early 80's Austin bands and, good god, when you enter a groove with Dave, you want to stay. LH

  • A churnin' urn of burnin' grooveness! Shredders could learn something about texture from Grissom. I didn't even mind it stayin' in one key.

  • Got some real nice licks happening in there...! Which Matchless ins that...? Anyone know...?

  • Looks like a Clubman. Although he's been playing Bad Cats for a while specifically the Wild Cat and I believe just pickup recently the Panther. I own both Matchless and Bad Cat amps and both are top of the line!

  • Definitely the best playing and musicality I've heard in a long time. Without all of the hype. (i.e. Eddie Van Halen, Zakk Wylde, etc. etc.

  • The best guitar playing and musicality I've heard in a while. Without all of the hype.(i.e. Eddie Van Halen, Zack Wylde, etc. etc.)

  • chicken picks eric johnson style... i like it

  • Exactly - his tone, his sound, Its so unique and steaming. Sometimes I think that maybe Grissom doesn't sing so good - thats why he never got a cd out in his own name. He seems like a very quiet guy and only wants to be the sideman. Too bad - his my favorite.

  • That's a great point. Many guitar geniuses stray from the very (comfortable) position in the band that allows them to create with less pressure on them.

Nothing shameful about being a sideman!

  • I can't get enough of this Vid , His playing , His Tone, His amp, His Sound. He has Great feel...

He's really tasty and expressive. Great Technique.

Adding that this is a great rhythm section as well. Did I miss anything :)

It would be awesome to know that he has a CD out and not just doing studio work for someone else... Does he tour?...

  • David was the MD for the Dixie Chicks about four years ago, but I don't know if he's still doing that.

  • Hey! Thanks for posting this ... Agree 1000% about DG ... Fantasic tone, chops, phrasing ... the whole enchilada and one of the best players on the planet (Nice guy, too!)

  • Yes, it's from the video DAVID GRISSOM - LONE STAR ELECTRIC GUITAR - PART 1.

I think he is a very underestimated guitarist - thats why i put it here!

  • is this from a instructional video of David's?

  • So bluesy and tight!
