u bring in such a different perspective-thank you ^_^ and I didn't know u were a Youtuber!! saw u in TJG's videos and that was it ^^; really like your channel *subscribes*
as a white guy in japan, i kinda feel very ambivalent concerning your situation. I mean asking DC for photo seems cool on the one hand, but it has a little bit of that "being in the zoo, but not as a visitor"-kinda feeling whereas you have the potential to really smooth and fit in this society. whether that's actually desireable is another question of course....
When I was traveling through China I had people randomly ask to take pictures with me, which I thought was really weird at the time. Apparently things like that happen a lot to people who look obviously foreign in Asia.
When I traveled around Europe everyone thought I was a native of whatever country I was in with the exception of Italy. Lol!
You do look part Japanese, but this whole time I'm like, 'damn he speaks English perfectly!' Cause I just assumed because your Asian and living in Japan you're Japanese. Which is what I'm guessing other Japanese think/thought.
Dude, you DO look Japanese, Cakes. I can see what people are saying. In your videos where you're out on the street, you kind of blend in with other Japanese people. That's not a bad thing at all. It is what it is. The only thing that makes you stand out a bit is your height...especially when you're standing next to TJG ;-)
It would be cool if you can make a part 2 of this with some more stories and i had some experiences kinda like yours while i was in Japan and i'm i will have again when i go back next year. In my case I'm white and from New Zealand but people in Japan would always think im American and ask where in America are from? etc all the time when in fact from NZ which 1000's of kms away from America.
When I was in Hong Kong they think I was African. When I was in India, street kids come up to me and ask if I'm Jackie Chan. When I was in Chicago they think I'm Latino..FTW! High five Cakes. Point is we all smiling skeletons.
Well~~ asians have been living there longer than white people have, so maybe they just expect you to know proper Japanese, like how Americans expect everyone to know proper English?
what's your Asian heritage and do you speak any other languages besides your native English and Japanese? if yes how well? (please compare them to your English and Japanese too.)
@CakesBomb Yeah, I got my 2nd class. I just started working on a degree now. Might move back to Japan in 4 or 5 years. Probably be there for a visit in January or February though.
People just assume that you're Japanese because it's easy for them and they don't have to think. For instance, I had a friend who was half Filipino and half white. When he was in an Asian part of town people assumed he was Filipino. When he was in a Hispanic part of town they assumed he was Hispanic. Sorry if this comment didn't make a lot of sense...
thats just weird man, but hell the world is just full of them. but hey I got a story about how people thought i was from Brazil it was pretty funny. this Brazilian lady just didn't believe me when I told her, "hey I'm a American." not saying its a bad thing but funny yes.
I know of Japanese-Americans and they have a very difficult time there in Japan because they look Japanese but their Japanese ranges from kiddy to nil, or just not perfect. I guess you haven't really since you didn't mention it.
Those Japanese girls wanted to take a picture with DC because he's black. I don't think they would ask any asian person, whether you're from America, China, or Indonesia or even half.
Haha, brilliant, well i am asian, but the other type asian so i definately don't look japanese, but still funny story, *added to me awesome playlist :D
dude, you're Asian??! all this time i thought you were Mexican lol :-B . its the opposite for me, I'm mixed Hispanic from Miami but everybody says i look more Italian and other Hispanics find it hard to believe that i am....especially since my Spanish kind of sucks
Awww, so it's an attention thing. Well there's the other side of it. You could have creepy japanese taking pictures of you when they think you aren't looking. It was harmless, but completely weird...
interesting topic I know that alot of my korean friends that were born and raised here in germany have the same kind of experience when they visit korea. as for japan I was once approached by some dude who looked like japanese keith richards or something in front of donki in full speed japanese I was like o_O and he went away, few seconds later he came back and asked "where you from?" me "Germany" and he left LOL oO
Yeah, when I was in Germany everyone assumed I was German.
In Tokyo, I get people who speak slow and try to use English, but out here in the inaka I get full speed Japanese with dialect -- and I am clearly not Japanese.
On the physical side your BeefCakes. Every time my wife would go to the embassy they were giving her 110% speed Japanese too, it was hilarious. I don't think she looks very Japanese but I guess they just assumed an Asian chick at the embassy had to be Japanese.
Lol "For the person that said my glasses are distracting they will be present in the next video as well" Excellent way to end a video!
P.S. You look Korean
