There is a coolness in the skating, but I don´think boring. Her moves are very modern, angular, muscular, and sleek. Not out of the balletic tradition nor hyper-feminine (the dainty hand/willowy arms thing). It´s an image of how a modern woman can be graceful (not to mention beautiful) but not fragile. I´m sorry no one picked up on the style. I like it very much.
@Karlinberlin1 I saw Nancy perform after the 92 Olympics in Miami. A very respected journalist who commented on dance said the same thing you did. She was less than impressed with Kristi Yamaguchi, and the audience agreed. Nancy was the star that night.
What a boring nonsense disconnected music choice. She should have won this FS no matter what, but I guess judges back then always considered both Kerrigan and Harding as Yamaguchi's bridesmaids.. which is annoying because they both could break Kristi's ass technically n even artistically at any moment during that period.
@snowballwannabe I think her choice of music may have affected her medal placement. The music is an original composition by another skater and IMO it's terrible. The music doesn't invoke any emotion at all. Sometimes it's better to go with the classics. The audience, judges and the skater often connect more with something familiar like Swan Lake or Carmen.
I don't understand her penchant for programs where the musical selection is full of bizarre breaks and all different styles jumbled together. None of the different cuts of music have anything to do with each other and the whole thing seems very disjointed and jarring. And she is wearing a very traditional, feminine, princessy dress which doesn't really go with the style of music she chose.
That opening combo was beautiful and particularly notable is the fact that she moved relatively quickly out of the first into the second jump - no delay to establish balance - beautiful routine.
@The123musicals I don't think she was overrated at all because she was a terrific technical skater...but boring? Could be, yes. She was phenomenal when she came on the scene, but the problem is her style didn't change. If you've seen one routine, you've seen them all. She did her one thing very, very well. She didn't experiment with choreography and push herself.
I thought the Olympics were every 2 years, but either Summer or Winter. So if the 1992 games were Winter, how come the 1994 were winter too? I'm confused.
@fusock Hey fusock -- up until 1992, both the summer and winter Olympics were held every four years, in the same year. After 1992, they decided to hold an Olympics every two years - so they held the next winter games in 1994, and then every 4 years (1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, etc.) The summer games kept their original schedule of every four years (92, 96, 2000, 04, 08, 2012, etc.). I believe they divided the years to help keep interest in the Olympics and to make $. Hope this helps!
@fusock Up thru 1994, the winter and summer games had been held the same year, every 4 years. 1994 was the first time they "staggered" the games-- alternating winter and summer. to manage this they just moved the winter games ,giving the winter athletes a once-only chance of having their next games be only 2 years away. from then on, it was back to the 4 year cycle. Winter Olympics since 1976 were 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010. Summer games no change at all.
Nancy was always so much better in the short program...better choreography, music, etc...her LP this season wasn't so good. Same with Lillehamer. But her SP at Lillehamer was one of the best ever and I don't even like her.
I love Kristi, but this program definitely deserved first place over Kristi. Kristi's lutz was a flutz and it didnt flow out of the landing, and the double axel entrance was better. Also nicer spirals as well. It deserved 5.9 5.9
@metsdudenj I agree. This was the best short program. The reason she wasnt put first was she wasnt ever really considered a gold medal contender here.
@metsdudenj you have to remember she skated very early, she was the first contender of any sort to skate. She skated before Harding, Yamaguchi, and Ito, and Harding and Ito had triple axel combos planned (also before Chen or Bonaly). So there is no way the judges could have given out 5.9s. Yamaguchi lucked out to skate alot later on.
@russianskatingfan Very true. She had bad draws always with the OP, same thing with the 1991 worlds. Harding skated first in 1991 and still got second in the short. Kristi deserved first in the 1991 worlds op, but here Nancy really had the complete program with superior elements in every way.
@metsdudenj She actually would have won the silver overall over Ito had she been 1st in the SP too. Because Ito was 4th in the SP. This despite that Ito clearly beat her in the LP but it was still only 2nd to 3rd.
What a great performance from Nancy. She is amazing! The height she got on the Triple Lutz was incredible, then repeated the height with the double toe loop! Just for the record, she WAS the winner of the '94 Gold Medal. She absoultely beat Oksana.
@banker1987 That event was so ironic to me b/c I always thought she was overscored in previous competitions and placed higher than she deserved, and then the one time she really did well and deserved to be first, they don't give it to her.
@firmingitup you are right. And as much as I don't like her at all, I think she should have won in Norway. Nancy was always talked up by the press and skating folk because of her looks and because of her demeanor...but she rarely delivered the goods. Then when she did - no reward.
I don't think she was penalized for her spins. They were very well done. I think the judges knew she would falter in the long program and favored Christy Yamaguchi.

@victoriaindigo Oh, I don't know. I think the music was beautiful; especially the first half, I think.
