I'm Parisian and It's true that a lot of parisians are rude but I don't think they don't want to speak english they just can't.
France is a very retarded country with the English language. And everybody hates parisians even french people, I guess we deserve it. Sorry for my english :)
It's true. I get the same treatment when I was there. They just pretend not knowing English so that u try to speak French. And they are really rude about it.
Typical french woman! I've seen many of them during my trip to Paris and even though the city is interesting, people are so rude, senseless and bigot. Even at the stores where they sell touristic stuff, they don't speak any other language and humiliate who doesn't speak French (no matter how hard you try to communicate in French). Before I go there, I was impressed by French culture, literature and art but now all I can say is that: I will never ever go France again.
That's actually not uncommon - I've heard from quite a few people who say that French shop assistants pretend they don't speak English at first and dilberately act dumb so that you have to struggle away
The mean french cliché, so good. Although once I've seen american tourists go to a library in the 6th arrondissement that was specialised in the cinema. They talked only english and expected the salesman to understand them and he was really sorry he couldn't understand them, they were very angry and making fun of him it was disgusting... So sometimes tourists are already mean and judgemental...
AWW.... this has to be a stereotype, are all french people in Paris rude? No I can not bring myself to believe it. I hear this everywhere and it gets played a lot.
I think it goes both ways guys, i have seen this happened at the Dior Store in Miami, FL...where tourist (French) would come and try to speak English, and the sales associates just look at them...like what???? lol is funny. I am glad I speak 5 languages....and I do work for Armani and I do help my customers in their native language....but not all French people are mean and rude. Maybe is cause I understand them and speak their language when I go to Paris. It helps.
@hlatino03 But, that sales lady understood her for sure. She was just being a snob. Carrie was speaking it really coherently. I am French and I could understand perfeclty well, therefore so could that woman.
French people are EXACTLY like this! Snotty and rude. Many of them know how to speak English but choose not to, even when the English person is struggling to communicate with them.
Not all of us, but some, I agree. SATC is an american tv show, and americans like to see the french exactly like they imagine us, it is also true. This episode is just a series of "clichés" about Paris and the french.
Some of them certainly are like you said. But not all the French people. Ben and I are the proof that some of us speak in English, and are not rude and stupid, and... Bad and evil people.
I'm sure you Americans are not all fat. It's the same thing. Just don't believe in clichés... It's too easy.
I never said that French people are "bad and evil" or "stupid".
Yes, of course I was generalizing - not all French people (well, I had Parisians more in mind, really) are rude. I have met friendly people on my numerous trips to France, but the majority of them, I'm sorry to say, were rude and unhelpful (my French isn't perfect). I didn't say that because of a cliche, I said it because of my own experiences.
the part where she feel in Dior was embarrassing!! Also the fall on the runway. I understood some of Carrie's dialogue I'm learning French! Beautiful language.
Does anybody know the name of the french actress in this scene? She's not credited anywhere and I cannot for the life of me remember where I've seen her before. Please, please, please; if you know her name, help me out here!
Further to my post below, is this a deleted scene? I'm a big SATC fan but I don't recall ever seeing this scene before! (And despite that I understood exactly what Carrie tried to say!) I'll also mention that I've travelled to both Rome and Paris, but the French were MUCH nicer to me than the Italians were! An odd reversal of stereotypical assumptions. Maybe the Parisians were nicer because I could speak French, who knows, but I experienced none of the supposed Italian warmth & kindess!!!
I'm french and I must say that Carrie speaks very well, it's not my case when i'm not in my country ! But this woman in the show is just a stereotype, all french people or parisians are not like that, if I can reassure you. Some of us are like that because they are egocentric persons. Some Parisian feel superior to the others because they live in a very known city and because that rises to them to the head (there is no reason), but it is doubtless the case in numerous countries, unfortunatly.
I'm Canadian & I speak French too, and Carrie did speak French quite well there. Her grammar was correct for the most part and I understood exactly what she was trying to say. And at the end of the day, if someone were truly trying like she was to speak the language of the country she was in, they definitely shouldn't be mocked or looked down upon!
@dragons7764 You're right, & French aren't like that at all, are happy (like others) if some1 does the effort to speak their language: I think it's more a sort of "mockery" done on purpose by the director...Ciao ;-)
I think this is classic Carrie. She's so awkward sometimes, and we all still love her and root for her...because there's a little bit of that part of Carrie in all of us!
This is a fucking bitch!!! poor Carrie, she's trying to speak french and this bitch looks her like shit ¬¬ french are chic, but sometimes they are too: "im french...fuck everybody else" but i still love paris... NO NO,it isn't a question hahahahxD
Well the "lady" who is only a sales woman is unpolite and stupid...she behave like if she just do not have in mind that her salary come from people like Carrie. I would not like to sound rude...but I have seen a lote that attitude in France...they refuse to speak english to the tourist.
I was in Paris at New Years. I bought French computer lessons a few months ahead and downloaded a podcast (the french ecole, highly recommend, the lady on the tape is REALLY nice). I found in Paris that if you make an effort to speak the language, they will be as accommodating as they can, except for 1 snot at a museum who laughed at me when I said Au Revoir badly. He was the only jerk I met. Others were very nice, and appreciated my attempts to speak French. A smile speaks all languages.
I'm Parisian and It's true that a lot of parisians are rude but I don't think they don't want to speak english they just can't.
