Not everything they did with Chris DeGarmo was great and not everything they did without him was bad. Their earlier stuff, up to "Empire" is their prime material but that can sort of thing can be said about most bands....their earlier stuff is their best. Few bands make it past the third album without falling off creatively or commercially by that point.
@helimech60 Yup, I'd have to agree. DeGarmo understood symphonic composition and was a gifted songwriter. But they have also wrote some very good music even without DeGarmo, but not quite as good.
@Netriderceo I agree with your first statement, but a band's early work is not always the best. For this particular group, I believe that is true, but in most cases the early music being the best is a biased, un-technical assertion formed because the later material was different and after the band's commercial hey-day. Many times, as with bands like Maiden and Priest, the music matured and became more technical and deep. Some old fans said nay, but from a real musical standpoint it's better.
@drquesadilla Actually, My brother-in-law is in a band and a great guitarist and he prefers the older stuff. I tend to agree with YOU though. It's just a matter of taste. I love a veriety which is why I like even their new stuff, where as my Bro-in-law likes only the old school metal. I'm just sayin' that it's not a matter of being "real" music it's simply a matter of what you like. I like the new stuff though.
@japum77 Well that is true, and it is about tastes to an extent, and I love all eras. Anyone with a background in musical technique though will tell you that from a musical standpoint, what i said was true. Anyone should listen to whatever he/she enjoys, but that isn't really what i was adressing. Often as a band progresses, songs become more progressive and mature. So it's not reasonable to dismiss the new tunes as "not as good" regardless of any personal preference, as it's a technical thing.
@tski1972 hey - maybe its a little harsh to say Tate had "given up on his voice". face it, as we get older, we all lose something. theres no way he could sustain that range over decades, i would think.. the smoking doesnt help (he is (or was?) a smoker, correct?). in other words, he just lost it, but didnt give up.
i agree with you - this band, to me, is a big letdown. thats not to say their body of work isnt great; ill enjoy it forever.
Will Chris DeGarmo ever come back? =(

Excellent album. Even my friends that weren't into metal and were not fans of Queensryche had this album in their rock music collection.

@drquesadilla As a musician myself, and as a person who loves a veriety. I agree.

wish i knew what they were using (specifically) for the FX on the vocals..esp. the back-ups too at parts

Queensryche WAS a great band. Geoff Tate has totally given up on his voice, and without Degarmo to keep Tate in line, the band has become a mess.
