awww they are so cute! i think they are gorgeous and love watching them at ardingly showground however i would not have one because the amount it costs to feed them! :)
they are all so gorgeous, but i would be scared to ride them as i would have worries if they decided to spook and gallop off there would be no chance of me being able to stop them as they're so strong! alot of admiration for people who can ride heavy horses well :)
The Clydesdale horse - the only horse where I can honestly say "Does my bum look too big on this horse" and I get a very honest NO!!! They are just fantastic horses and wonderful to ride. So good that I got one myself!
the one besides the clydedales is it a brabant? I'm from belgium and i love riding brabants :D they're so comfy. I like seeing hem with a long tail. Docking tails is forbidden in Belgium since 2001 but breeders somehow always find a way ...
@betsoncw1 Ardennes is a different breed but they are very similar. An Ardennes is smaller (1.55 m -1.60 m) and a bit stockier than a Brabant. But it is really hard to tell them apart on sight :)
they are generally quiet and wiling - I found riding them easy and not at all strong - just a bit noisy on the roads as 4 giant horseshoes hit the tarmac!
I love their feathers..lol really cute horses.. I show my paint mare in wp and horsemanship it is cool to look at a completely different breed of horse. Nice really nice.
They are very surprising horses, not ordinary appearance. I think the such could win a tiger or a lion, fight 1 vs 1. After all horses besides blows by back hoofs, can beat in a direction ahead of themselves two forward hoofs.
Heavy horses always represented as horses bogatyr (search word in wikipedia) in russian bylinas (severe fairy tales)
Beautiful horses! I have a Belgian that I am starting under saddle. May I ask what type/name of saddle you use, I am having a hard time fitting my mare.
Hi! I have a belgian too, a 6 years old. I'm only 17 years old and I can do everything that I want with him. western Pleasure, barel racing, jumping, trail, EVERYTHING ! He is belgian x Quarter Horse, and he is at 17,1 hands. If you want info about anything, I'll be there for you !
Shires are so beautiful. Definitely my favorite breed. I've read that on average Shires are 1 to 2 hands taller than Clydesdales : ) I saw one that stood 22 hands! I love what gentle giants they are :)
Docking the tails in the UK is also a little different as it's illegal to dock the tails high enough as to not cover the genitals too. I'm not sure which way I feel about it. With a working horse it may be needed to dock the tail to prevent tearing, but it doesn't look any neater then natural.
I won't say american horses are lazy, I mean heck you've got the armish I'm certain they'd contribute to well kept heavy horses. Over here in England and Scottland they're keeping the work of ploughing and cart pulling alive still, which I'm pleased about.
I agree! Drafts look so much better without their tails docked (not to mention that cutting a horse's tail off is just... ugh). Most people do it out of tradition nowadays. It's time for a new tradition.
@WantingItAll as nice as long tails look for most heavy breeds they are docked very young, some for the look (traditional, like cropping a boxers ears or docking a tail) and some do it for functional purposes (if they are work/pulling horses then the tail is docked to keep it from getting caught and hair being ripped out).
@Emura100 Docking working horses so their hair can't get caught is total nonsense. Caught in what? The plough? The plough never was so close. The only thing it could be is because a horse could catch the lines with its tail, but even that is rare. I've seen heavy horses working in the forest thirty years ago in Luxemburg and they had long tails. The man working there said it was total nonsense they had problems with the tails. I'm glad it's forbidden. Cropping dogs is just insane.
@WantingItAll some of them are. My belgian has a full tail (well....had untill some small children with curry combs got to it - but it will grow back....I hope)
awee. we just got a clyde at the barn i board at... she was in line to be a budweiser clyde, but she had one black foot so they used her for breeding. now two of her babies are used as budweiser horses.
@DraftxHorsexRider At the very start that horse is Dingle. He is an Ardennedes who came over from Belgium where they still dock their horses tails, so that is the only reason why he is sadly docked. He was bought like that, Cumbrian Heavy Horses did not dock his tail.
@DraftxHorsexRider It is pretty, and with more heavy horses being ridden now, it;s sooo nice to see. However, our Clydesdales are driven as well as ridden, and the tails aren't suitable for driving :( also, in a show class, heavy horses with tails don't show off the shape of their upper legs and hock very well, and can result in them looking too heavy for the show ring :( hence why you don't see many with tails!!! However, look cracking!!!
not necessarily - shires can be smaller than a clyde, both range from 16 to 20 hands. We have a shire on my yard that is the same size as my warmblood - a bit heavier, granted!
omg i wish one of those riders was me xD i love draft horses^^ they are so big and charming! And not slow at all! They might look a bit slow cause the large steps they got when they walk ;)
WOW! Thats one gorjuss colour of Ardeennes! BTW your smart you go in a bridle LOL! I went with my cousins Ridden broomare(who were not in foal) down to the beach for a gallop she is 18.2 and a big baby LOL! @betsoncw1 No Brabant is also known as Belgian draught, Ardennes is also known as the Ardennais, is stockier and comes from France.
