I live in St Louis, tried just about all of Schlafly's beer and to me they are an average at best micro brewery similar to Boulevard. Some of their beer is ok, nothing is outstanding and some are down right skunky.
Hopefully they can get it together and get up with the big boys in quality like Bells, Sierra Nevada, Dogfish head, bla bla bla.
@EclecticDiscus I think Schafly is pretty good, but you really can't put them up against Bells, DFH and Sierra, those are far superior craft beers. I feel the same way about Rahr here in Fort Worth TX - a good craft brewery, but nothing to knock your socks off!
I can almost always taste bug spray when I drink pale ale. That may be the tangerine taste you mention, but I just can't enjoy them because of that. I do love many of Schlafly's other brews though, and highly recommend having a brother in St. Louis. It's worked out well for me.
That's an interesting comment! Your senses are giving you a bug spray taste most likely triggered by something in the hops. I've had beer that tasted like hot dog water smells, most likely triggered by a yeast strain.
Sorry to tell you this, but I believe Boulevard is actually the largest American-owned brewery in the state of Missouri. Sorry, had to represent for a second...
Great review guys, and you are right on the money regarding the balance of many APAs & IPAs out there. Alot seem to blast you out of the park with the bitterness with no support from the malt.
Lagunitas makes a nice IPA which I think strikes a good balance. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the comment Carver - my favorite beers are the ones that are the most well balanced kind!! It really matters and I think balance is lost on a lot of beers.
Maybe the "lager cleanliness" that Paul is sensing is from a clean American ale yeast character. I've had my homebrews with American ale yeast come out clean as a lager before (obviously minus the sulfur note) when the fermentation was on the cool side.

It's winter now, be sure to grab some Schlafly Centennial EBS.
Their APA is a fine beer. Recommended.
It's one of my favorite beers. It's in a brown six pack. It is good when freshly poured, and proceeds to get even better as it warms.
BTW, If you want to try a Porter, try Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald. It's as good as this style gets.

Can you guys get Saranac where you are? Their flagship beer is their pale ale which is pretty good. Should try it sometime.

No saranac here Chad, but I remember it being a pretty decent beer. I think I drank their black and tan when I lived up there.
You're a beer tasting machine Chad!!
