  • When enver will they make a song about the victims of the crimes. It's always baout the poor murderes who say sing about. No one is intersted in the people who fell victim to those psychopaths.

  • interesting that the pop industry of the time turned away all songs with strong sexual connotations but not this extremely violent song. interesting...

  • This song is so fucked up

    BTW im 15

  • Whoah! Are you kidding me?! This song is about him killin a woman! It aint just today's music that's violent, apparently! Se and violence, that's what sells in America!

  • with todays so-called music it,s no-wander that sosiety is screwed-up. listen to the

words IF theres is any, killings, money, drugs,or what have you. bring back the

old stuff, and let,s dance again.

  • I had this single when I was a little girl. I preferred the other side of it: Ruby Red, but this is the one I remember the most.

  • today in music class we learned the shift to rock 'n' roll music. my teacher said that the teenagers liked that sort of music better because the text was more appealing to them. she played "tutti frutti" by little richard and then "tom dooley". i was so fascinated by the calm of this song. i've never really heard folk music before. it was something totally new for me, actually. i wonder why people these days always require something new. Why cant they just play the died out music again?

  • i like Macabre's one better :T

  • Love this :P

  • <3

  • too bad that they don,t play music like this anymore on radio,

all they play is effin, garbage

  • from the days when people took responsibility for their actions, and suffered the consequences. I didn't remember this being a song about murder. It's still a great song, by a great group.

  • keep your head up Tom! leave the crying to the Bitches

  • Yeah, I liked these folk songs from the old days. I played along with a number of them on my guitar. It helped me practice the guitar.

  • This song is no.91 in the world-all-time-charts #kingston #trio

  • This happen in fergurson nc right? That's right I know what I m talking about.

  • By this time tomorrow, reckon, where you'll be in some lonesome valley, hanging from a white oak tree Ref. Never again in summer watching the flowers grow never again in summer watching the river flow Now that the night is fallin', nobody shares your loneliness now that the night is fallin', you will regret I guess You will regret I guess
  • We used to sing this in every single school camp. Actually, we learned it in school; plus an additional five verses: Listen, the bells are ringin', they gonna pray for you poor boy, the song they're singin', will be the last for you Ref. Hang down your head, Tom Dooley, this is your last goodbye, hang down your head, Tom Dooley, you know the reason why Met her on the mountain..ect. By this time tomorrow reckon where I'd been if it hadn't been for Grayson I'd been in Tenessee More to come
  • @FelisTerras I would love to know the rest of the verses you have.I have been listening to and singing this song for 35 years and I never heard anything other than what is written above. Thanks, Sean

  • @electricmick357: Sorry it took me so long to reply. here the last: "By this time tomorrow, reckon where you'll be, in a lonesome valley, hanging from a wild oak tree. Ref. Never again in summer, watching the flowers grow, never again in summer, watching the river flow. Ref. Now that the night is falling, nobody shares your loneliness, now that the night is falling, you will regret I guess. 3x."

There you go, hope you have as much joy with these lines as I had throughout the years

  • I´m 66 and still love the old songs. Feel a bit sorry for the young ones today, they have missed something really good!

  • @FarstaTrollet They can still listen to it..

  • @FarstaTrollet i'm an 18 years old boy now, and i love it.

i saw and spoke to a lot of artists.

I saw Paul McCartney, Elton John Cliff richard and many more.

Klaus Voormann bass player of John Lennon en George Harrison i spoke with him, also with Graham Gouldman of the group 10CC.

It's sad that the most of the younger people don't like this music anymore.

Greetings from a 18 years old boy who loved music.

    The Netherlands.

  • Tom Dula was my g-g-great grandfather's 1st Cousin. I knew the song Tom Dooley, before I knew Jesus Loved me!

AdmiralCSN: Some people think...people like me KNOW Ann Melton (Laura's Cousin) killed her and my cousin Tom took the blame...

  • My dad was named Tom Dooley after this song xD

  • 20 people like justin beiber

  • I sure miss the music of yesturday.... these are the songs I grew up with... songs with some meaning and words that made sense

  • i live close to that one girls grave, its just down the road i go there everytime they have one of those fair things. When the cows aren't in the field

  • @Melody1Running Go to Tom's grave when the Bulls are in the field...talk about fun! We nearly couldn't get out of the field...

  • Decent song, but this peaked at 1 for weeks? Meh.

  • @jethyy yup. it kicked off the folk scare. three voices, three instruments. none electric.

  • I too had the original LP and wore it out. I know of very few people under the age of 50 who know anything about music from this era, or the music of Stephen Foster who was the father of American popular music. If you follow the lineage, in music history terms, Stephen Foster was the grandfather of American folk music, Woody Guthrie was the father, and Pete Seeger, Dylan and Arlo Guthrie (in his case genetically) were the sons. Of course, there are innumerable uncles and cousins too like...

  • @Trismegistus10

I'm to say that I'm under the age of 50 and listen to music from period in American Musical History. It has a such a special sound and emotional quality that much of today's music is lacking. Also i like your genealogy of folk music lol

  • sniff sniff cry sob cry

  • "Tom Dooley" was actually a Confederate soldier named Tom Dula who had been taken prisoner by the Federals. Upon his release in 1865, the man in charge of processing insisted that his name was Dooley instead of Dula; not wanting to argue and possibly delay his release, Dula went ahead and signed out as "Tom Dooley". There is still considerable controversy as to whether or not he actually committed the crime for which he was hung, with partisans arguing strongly on both sides of the issue.

  • @AdmiralCSN lets see some people beileve her cousin killed her and tried to run off with him, right?

  • @Melody1Running That is one theory, IIRC. Another is that another man wanted her but was rejected, so he killed her and left Dula holding the bag.

  • @AdmiralCSN Actually, it's also phonetics even though it's spelt "Dula" in the mountains, the "a" gets the "ee" sound, even Laura was Laurie to the mountain folks call her. He actually didn't sign anything other than an X, when he was released, the processing officer signed his name Dooley...which is why he's called "Tom Dooley." As for murder, I am biased, Tom is my 5th cousin 1x removed...He's innocent!

  • This is based on an actual incident that took place after the end of the U. s. Civil War in 1865. it really did happen!

  • My father had this 45 rpm disc records, he used to play it so many times when I was a child, I'm 38 years now and so many memories about him......I'm going to seek the house to find all of his records.

  • Doc's is better

  • This was my great- great- great uncle (Tom Dooley)

  • @elitehalomaster How are you related to him? I mean i get great-great-great uncle, but which of Eliza's children are you related to? I am Tom's 5th cousin 1x removed...

  • @standsure09 i don't really know my mom told me when I was little and showed me this song

  • Gentle melody, violent words.

  • A different time, a different mood... we still believed back then...

  • i love this song i really really love it hear it when i wAs 10 the first time *-*

  • Bob Dylans is still Classier

  • @Shluut4money I guess it's a matter of taste. I love pop folk music. Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, Jim Reeves are some of my favourite artist. I'm 35 so these artist were popular before my time same as Bob Dylan who I admire but he isn't on my top list. Kingston Trio are definitely on my top list, so many artist I love today would probably never have found love for folk music if it wasn't for the Trio.

  • @imagodtoya I'm 20 and i'm a fan of the Kingston Trio, The Ink Spots, Buddy Holly, The Platters, and many others. None of my friends like them, but it's the music that can always make me smile. Without it we wouldn't have any good music these days in my opinion.

  • @imagodtoya im the same way i grew up with this from my grandfather im only 15 and i love this song and many of the artiusts you named. unfortunaely i will never get to listen to this song with the man in person hes very ill and dieing and this is always the song i listen to when i think about him... im gonna miss you alot grandpa...

  • tom was in my family

  • I am singing this song in a gig next week and it has got great harmoinies!

  • my fathers side of the family loves The Kingston Trio and thankfully they have introduced me to this amazing group

  • i have always loved this song ... i know it by heart and im only 14 :)

  • @canobeenz Hey Beenzie! Good ta see a young kid like yourself able to appreciate good ol' American folk music, you just renewed my faith in your generation!! If ya liked this, try some of their other songs. M.T.A. is one of their best, and it's one of the original protest songs...maybe THE first! (The Sloop) John B. is another great, sung by them. ....................PEACE............. "Bandit"

  • Classic

  • Doc's is better

  • i have this song at school with guitar lessons XD hahah

  • I'm amazed that I actually know this tune. I think either my godmother or my nana used to sing it.

  • @headwoundfairy The song came out in the late 1950s

  • @Lisnageeragh

Yes It's catching. Have you or anybody got a copy of "The Reprieve of Tom Dooley" also by Kingston Trio

  • @ishkas93 No have no info at all.

  • No matter what I am doing or where I am, when I hear this I stop, smile, sway and sing along <3

  • Oh my Goodness, what wonderful memories this Song brings back.... A friend, now my Husband brought this record back for me, from Canada to Germany in 1959. I fell in Love with the whole package. THANKS from California

  • love dis song

  • reminds me of snowcones and roses

  • I remember in high school my history teacher introduced this song to the class - fell in love with the Kingston Trio immediately. I'm only 30 and I wish I had lived when these guys first came out - would have probably been a roadie for them!

  • My 8 year old son has taken to this classic , and loves to hear me sing it before he goes to sleep.. so special...!

  • Great song, even for those of us that are less than 30 years old. RIP to the Kingston Trio. Does anyone know their names?

  • @joshuabrooks21 Dave Guard, bob shane and Nick Reynolds..

  • @fjbutch RIP to Dave Guard, and Bob Shane. Now they can sing with the angels.

  • @joshuabrooks21

Nick Reynolds is dead, but I think Bob Shane is still with us.

Dave Guard's death shocked me, because I thought he was so young!

  • one of my alltime favs. thanks

  • @janetathensbay and i do. i wasnt even a thought or born yet, for another 18 years. but i have listened ever since ive heard them here on youtube

  • When I was a teen in Denver , one of the radio stations had a marathon playing this over and over , for a couple of days I think. Seems the management had to break in to stop it. ??? That was 1959 maybe. Anyone out there from Denver Area remember.>?? I hav always loved this song, I am 67 now. Those were the days I fondly remember.

  • @cologirl42

I do remember that! Was that KIMN, 950 am?

  • @DavidODenver

Yep, last night of KIMN in 1988. Man Mountain Muphy played it no matter what was asked for.

  • @cologirl42

I remember the last night that KIMN was on the air. 1988, Man Mountain Murphy played this song no matter what was requested from the phones. When someone asked for anything by Michael Jackson, he would reply, "You got it! Here is Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley by Michael Jackson." It was a cool move but was probably a career stopper for Man Mountain.

  • I used my imagination for the video part!

  • My grandfather before he passed away used to sing this song all the time. <3

  • So glad I found this song. My 65 yr old father has sung this to me for years. :) thnx for the post.

  • Does he hang down his head and cry??

  • @darrin42 no but its really funny we all sing this song when he comes over

  • haha nice one. Poor old Tom Dooley.

  • Danny Tanner

  • This song is my # one favorite folk song of all time. I was just eight when it reached the top of the billboard charts in 1958 and it always thrilled me with the 3 part harmony and because it was so easy to sing-a-long which I still do to this day, who can't resist jopining a-long. Folk thrived even more in the 60s and it was mainly as a result of these boys. What say you out there in YT do you have a favorite folk song of your own or is this the one!!

  • DakotaJim I would have to say Goodnight,Irene by The Weavers is my favourite folk song. Its originally a Leadbelly song but its been covered many times.

  • Yes they were great and they were also blacklisted during the McCarthy communist hearings just like Pete Seager and god knows how much fame & fortune they lost from these accusations. The Weavers had many other songs including On Top Of Old Smokey that was converted to that other novelty On Top Of Spagetti. Thanks for your reply greatly appreciated!!!

  • Favorite folk song? Hmmm. Let's see. That's a hard one, isn't it? Gypsy Laddie/Gypsy Davey has to be up there, of course, just for it's adaptability and easily relatable story. In the Pines get's my vote for best folk song, I think.

  • thanks for your reply and interesting choice!!

  • se tokar la cancion esta con la guitarra!!! =)

  • This reminds me of my late dad, played this and sang this too. Thanks for this. RIP dad x

  • Tom Dooley played by Little Joe Cartwright.

  • Great song, lyrics good. Used to listen to this and many more when Dad played them back in the fifties. Brings back my childhood memories in the East End, London.
