My Grandmother was in Long Beach and Oakland/SF during the war. She actually went out from Poteau when she was 17, after a friend of hers went out and wrote her to say she had a place and life was good. She rode the train out, by herself. My Grandma worked in the plants out there, and also was photographed to sell war bonds in the paper. She has Alzheimer's now but she remembers California and still beams with pride over her life there and contribution to the war effort. She's my hero!
