  • The falling leaves among this cold winter, memories of past, hopes for tomorrow, strength to go on and soul to feel the falling leaves...

  • Chet is definitely a master of classical and country style. If you want

to hear this in a true jazz mode, put "Barney Kessel Autumn Leaves" in the

search area. This is not to take anything away from Chet, who is awesome,

but for real jazz you need to hear Barney Kessel's version.

  • I truely don't understand how can 7 people dislike this ...

  • as a sax player, I'm dumbstruck by a lot of jazz guitarists because I've always tended to have the wrong attitude toward string instruments.

I usually wrongly assume that string players have a lot more trouble than wind players when it comes to expressing emotion in jazz charts... but i'm wrong.

Kudos to all string players here who enjoy playing jazz, at least every once in awhile. i don't want to sound cliche, but it's special.

  • 7 fake melomane

  • Fuck off these "OMG! HE IS SO GOOD: I'M A LOOSER..BETTTER QUIT PLAYING GUITAR" take it as a challenge..everyone can learn this. he is super good, but no god, and we can try to get 10% of his skill and be happy :D

  • @trueamerica911 no kidding. I saw this and said "I suck, time to get better"

  • Dammit! It's one thing to set the bar ridiculously high. It's another thing to make it look so damn effortless.

  • Fortunately 'oldspam' our guitars love us just the way we are. As long as we pick them up and play they will always be happy to be part of the family.

  • I wouldn't be able to play it even with a Game Shark.

  • Simply amazing :O

  • amazes me to know its only one guitar, simply unbelievable.. sound so crisp and clear..beautiful

  • Listening to Chet play makes me feel bad about my own arrangements and inspires me to do better at the same time

  • Six people don't like this

  • When I played this video, my guitar jumped out of the case and played, leave me alone!

  • true, actually he's a lot more than just country

  • To call Chet Atkins "country" is like calling Jesus a "relatively nice guy."

  • listening to this I thought my guitar must think i'm such a loser.

  • @oldspam

my guitar thinks im a loser too...after listening to chet,,,i think i am too..

  • @oldspam hahahahhaaa.. me tooo.. I was taking a 2nd look at my guitar feeling sooo sorry for myself lol

  • @oldspam My wife read this a split second faster than me as I scrolled down and she started cracking up just as I read it. I've been telling her the same thing as I watch all this guys stuff. Is there a pawn shop near !!!!!! funny as hell !

  • flooring !

  • I think I've listened to this video about 25 times in a row now. I cant stop listening to it. The music just takes you to another place. A Masterful performance!

  • So smooth is his fingering

  • Mesmerizing! Love it! Thanks!

  • There is a guitar tab (with proper notation included) out there. All you have to do is google search "Chet Atkins" + "Autumn Leaves." The tab is in a PDF, under a tommyemauel website..

But then again, if you can play a song like this at all, you probably don't need a tab!

  • @TheCoughlm but it's not for this version

  • @tubegucker1

Its close enough. I imagine if anyone can actually play this song they will have no difficulty adapting it. Enjoy!

  • Unspeakable, and indecipherable his amazing sound is!

  • for some reason the few bars between 1:45 and like 1:53 give me chills

  • Tabs....prease

  • @GTYOYO If you'd be able to play that tune you wouldn't be in need for any tabs!

  • One of the all time greats. Amazing performance.

  • Atkins was a great guitar player but his diet sure did suck

  • @iTzNoxy

That was one of the stupidest comments I've ever read

  • soothing

  • Argeggios anyone? The king, no one like him.

  • @pretorious700 I love chet but he got those from lenny

  • was that travis picking?

  • Trademark Tommy Emmanuel lick at 2:56

  • The media tried to give so much hype around Chet, truth was there was no need for hype when you are working with a musical genius the world is entraced for years to follow.

  • @BitOveRate entranced

  • I' m really entertaining to listen to his music, the way of playing with a mute strings is really fantastic...

  • search Alex DePue Autumn Leaves for a beautiful interpretation on the violin - my all time favorite version. Chet's is awesome, too - but on the guitar.

  • @pattyfromtoledo Alex is awesome! Really started getting into him after he played with Vai.

  • @dann3th3manni3 Yes - agree that he is awesome! I'm so lucky to be seeing him in concert this weekend in BG, Ohio. I hope he plays this song : )

  • Ottimo..!!

  • The four people who disliked this must have a personal problem with him because there's nothing wrong in this amazing performance.

  • I read so many nice words about Chet here, I only can say: Chet was and still is a true genius, humble person, and inspiration to all music lovers around the world. Chet i miss you.

  • Cool :)

  • yep

  • Yow! Is that possible!

  • Beautiful!

  • cette mélodie est du français Joseph Kosma, elle s 'intitule "les feuilles mortes"

  • This is so very beautiful. It just amazes me how anyone could play like that. He was surely blessed with great talent & a love for music. It came from deep within him. I believe he felt every note in his soul. Loved him.

  • Man, can he slap that wood.

  • Wow!

  • The ultimate sign of respect - silence during a performance. The person controlling the "applause' sign/light should be eviscerated for covering Chet's harmonics. Audience members next, for following like sheep.

Chet always was brilliance in performance! What a great transition from flamenco to classic Chet style - RIP.

  • @wagonmaster1974 omfg dude i know exactly what you mean. "Chet's harmonics"...

  • Anyone here the cup hit the floor @ 2.46???

  • he's so fucking good

  • It is what I would imagine Eddie Van Halens dad to be like.

  • He's always been one of THE guitar men!

  • did u know that chet was blind in one ear?

  • @jehovahuponyou Yeah and I'm deaf in one of my nostrils.

  • @joytoy322 - Poor thing, I know a good Doctor - ROFL!!!

Finally someone with a good sense of humor, LORD BLESS, Joy!

  • @jehovahuponyou :D <33333 lolol

  • Is he using his right pinky/little finger at all?

  • @BrucePetty Excellent observation:

Chet normally used his right pinky as an anchor point.

It is a common technique used by classical, thumbpickers, fingerstyle, etc. guitar players.

An anchor point can be a either a finger, the base of hand, forearm, etc which aids in the easier playing (and or placement of fingers on the strings).

There are other similar techniques used for the left hand which also allow one to play easier and be more versatile in their guitar playing.

  • @TTexas2 easier said than done.

  • best man who ever pick up a guiter i look up at him as a guiter lol

  • HE WASN'T DONE PLAYING!!!!

  • He's playing the same as the rest of the song, just improvising in a different style to the body of the song

  • What is he playing in the intro? Thank you

    .

  • What is he playing in the intro? Thank you somuch.

  • R.I.P. god of guitar!

  • Powder blue

    Sunburst orange

    Crinkled fingers

    Reachin' round

  • good guitarists play

    chet moves us

  • Chet works his magic with this classic old tune. What an inspiration.

  • @esseaindanaotinha He sure could his musical scope was fantastic country jazz folk pop classical endless.

  • This sums up being a guitar virtuoso.

  • 3:03 ..That makes me mad. They clapped during the harmonics..

  • @TheBeatlesCom The TV shows had applause signs that would come on so the audience would clap at the right time. They wanted them to clap a performer off stage. Messed up a lot of endings to songs and bits on variety shows. ;^)

  • geeesh. hope i could see him live!!!

  • he is the boss

  • chet was at his best in the 1950s he played fancer guitar licks back then.

  • IMO most versatile guitarist ever, my favorite

  • Yngwie who? Chet was the man!

  • Wow, I don't think that even Chet knew just how good he was...THE MASTER....Bill

  • The master, Chet, takes a beautiful but simple tune and turns it into a fingerstyle masterpiece. From one who strives to keep his memory alive through my own feeble attempts to play his songs.

  • @OrangeAni ears :D

  • wow my grandfather told me about how great chet atkins was and he wasnt lying, and i highly doubt that steve vai could do this

  • @ntrnate no one and I mean no one can play like the Master - He is the greatest !!!

  • @ntrnate yeah . Not to enter a sterile debate anyway , but steve vai has other capabilities . And he learned from Franck Zappa and he knows a lot about jazz music , too . So ... i doubt he could do that , but , you know , i won't bet my hand ! [french expression] [means i won't be anything too valuable on his unability to play stuff like that]

  • @ntrnate btw , don't take all this too seriously . chet is really a GREAT guitarist .

and he's a whole lotta more inspiring than vai , to me at least . [the only shredder i really like anyway is Joe Satriani]

  • My guitar Hero. So thankful for the YouTube postings of Chet.

  • he always had a sorted out style which never really changed he is an absolute pleasure to listen to "captain cool".

  • Simply awesome. Great Chet!

  • wow, one of the greatest guitarists ever.

  • amazing!

  • The 5 star rating says it all ''Awesome''

    Thanks for posting

    RC

  • What a piece of music again. A joy to hear.

  • sounds like there is more than one player if you close your eyes.

  • oh! YES

  • @ 2:46 or 2:47 it sounds like someone in the audience drops something... oh ya and chet was absolutely fantastic and flawless as always ;)

  • its a plastic cup..:)

Chet is and always will be one of the greats

  • Absolutely beautiful take on a jazz standard. He did the same with "Take Five". Never tried to emulate other guitarists, he simply let his inspiration pour out.

  • Um genio mesmo!!! Mestre, mestre .... very sentimental song!!! Congratulations

  • Un génie

  • 훌륭하다

  • a true master in every sense!!!!!

  • ingenius!

  • i love this music.....thank you atkins

  • 'I listened to his music so much that I felt that I knew him, and when I finally did meet him, I did know him...and it was his music that told me all about his soul...and I learned a great lesson from that, I learned that a musician cannot separate their musical ability from his soul, because the two go together, and when I play the guitar what you're really listening is me on the inside..."

    Tommy Emmanuel about Chet Atkins

  • Soromoc,

I know that feeling! When I finally met him, we swapped licks on Winter Walkin'. I kept thinking, "What in the world am I doing here??" but Chet was so gracious...every bit as much as I had heard about him!

I, too, knew his personality through his music, so, strangely, when I did meet him, I felt totally comfortable calling him by his first name.

    (continued...)

  • (...continued)

When my wife told Chet I'd named my first son after him, he nearly freaked out. His eyes got big and he asked, "How old is he? Where does he live?" I'd never seen him so excited. I was so happy it pleased him! He really loved people, and it showed clearly in his music. He was the kind of person you couldn't help but admire.

  • i know, that is why i listen to his music...he inspires me to play the tune myself.the honesty in emotion is so hard to find, but he has it.maybe your son develops a love for music as chet did.. =)

  • @soromoc Sounds like Rik Emmett. Chet's got HIS OWN style. Brilliant Musician!

  • @soromoc Chet Baker plays very sweet melodies, but at heat he is a junkie. Musical ability and soul can be seperated.

  • @soromoc Chet Baker plays very sweet melodies, but at heat he is a junkie. Musical ability and soul can be separated.

  • @sepehr1956 i agree, but do you really think that honest art can be created without speaking through soul, mind or heart?

  • @soromoc

No greater compliment and testament to the soul of Chet can be paid, than that by Tommy Emmanuel. Tommy, you and I were exactly the same, except you had innate talent and perseverance. You've taken what Chet's done, and expounded on it. I had the same love affair 1,500 miles away from Nashville in northern Utah that you had 15,000 miles away in Australia. I finally met Chet while I was in the service in 1968, and he was the perfect Country Gentleman I had always envisioned.

  • @soromoc only true music has soul. these days it seems more people are selling their souls for fame and money.

  • unbelievable. the mans incredible

  • This song is so beautiful.

    Thanks for sharing with us!!!!!!

  • A True Master !

  • what a monster......

  • Chet Atkins infuses, animates his music with a gentle, familiar soul. Every aspect of his technique is masterful : such a happy marriage of playful dexterity with glowing, mysterious tone. However, even among musical geniuses, the soul quality is very rare, and gently overpowers all the rest.

  • What a great way to say it. Chet is like no other, it's all about the soul!!!!

  • genius no other guitarist is as versatile as Chet jazz country pop folk the list is endless

  • From the beginning to about 1:10 in the video, he sounded like the late great Johnny Smith, then he started doing a more Country/Western sound.

  • You think a lot of that was Lenny Breau influenced? I know Chet really influenced Lenny, but they were hanging out a lot during this time, probably exchanging a lot

  • @mishaguitar Yes! I was thinking about Lenny when I heard this. The re-harmonizations, the 'classical' figures, the harmonics, the reconstruction of the melody....

  • I love Chet and Tommy, I couldnt say which is better, love them both, but to me, it seems real odd to hear it called a Tommy like run, when Chet did it way before Tommy, however with Tommy, I could see someone saying it was a Chet like run, because Chet did it first.

  • ¡ Que sentimiento para tocar !

    Grande interpretación de Atkins =)

  • great guitarist but he gets a twangy sound for classical style due to his right hand, but thats how it should be for country so lol i cant complain

  • Comment removed

  • Notice at about 1:37 how the audience is spell bound on Chet. I've been to many concerts, his and others and Chet's the only performer I have ever seen do this time and time again.

  • The geatest indeed! The one and only Mr Guitar!

  • He is the greatest!

  • Tab... heh, you should just learn to read music.

  • nah.. use your ears, just like most fingerstyle guitarists did, such as Buster B Jones, Merle Travis, Jerry Reed etc.

  • Learning music from real sheats is a skill that not everyone has....

    such as you.

  • i would love that ....

Go eat some tabs for breakfast narb.

  • Go back to school where they teach you how to speak proper English.

P.S. Don't u have anything better to do?

  • Many thanks for your comment!

  • Does anyone have the tab on this or a similar version? Its great

  • I've got one from one his LP... Tab on guitarpro5 if you want

  • What lp?

  • Chet's always the best but I do agree he was at his best in the mid to late 70's. Seen him in person then a few times and was always amazed of his flawless performances.

  • Just PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!

  • He and marcel dadi missed me !

  • Wow....

    Amazing

  • I don`t believe that any other guitar had a repertoire as large as Chet had.

  • Absolutely true. Chet had literally thousands of tunes in his repertoire. And he was the one guitarist I know who could play the same song twenty different ways. He didn't have to do it off sheet music, he did it all out of MEMORY. Sometimes he simply improvised, and his improvisations sounded 100 times better than most guys reading off sheet music. He was simply put INCREDIBLE. phenomenal repertoire, perfect ear for music, phenomenal musical memory, incredible dexterity...he was MR GUITAR!

  • I believe it was John D. Loudermilk who said Chet could hear a new tune once for the first time, and immediately hear in his head the chord changes, hear where the tune was headed as far as chord progressions, melody lines etc, and immediately improvise on the tune. In short, Chet was a guitar genius.

Of course, it didn't hurt that he had a guitar in his hand from the age of nine...

  • Halfway through when he goes into "Chet Mode" is just classic. Love me some CGP

  • Chet was in fine form on this one! What a great arrangement!

  • one of his best

  • Oh man. Do you have this full Austin City Limits episode? There is a great version of You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To on it. But I've never seen all the songs from this episode.

  • Thank you for sharing this one and he was the very best.
