You don't mention anywhere that The Great Gatsby is a commentary on the Roaring 20's, starting with the self-delusionary nouveau riche, roaring through the speakeasies, and ending with the Great Depression. It's very specific to that decade; in fact, the pivotal conflict resolution occurs on the day the protagonist turns 30.
