One of my favorite songs of all. I love how he messes the lyrics up, or mixes them up I guess. I loved you since our place got wrecked................. The back ups knew the words. Still a brilliant version and way better than the produced video.
Hmmm... I've known Cohen's work (oeuvre) for 43 years and I agree with what all you guys declare. Cohen to me on an existential level is -'authenticity in action'. It''s just not worth it if it's not real. The tricky slice is the mystery of it all.
Note - with this f-#ing amazing rising of the people this year - 'Arab Spring' . And now (Oct. 2011) 'Occupy Wall Street' (OWS) - you might want to listen to Cohen's apt titled tune 'Demorcracy' penned in 1992 - prescience, I dare say.
genuis is too small a word for this master. he is much more. i bow to him and to all who "get" him. If we ran the world..well it would just run woudn't it?
f'' n ay just when you thought you loved everything about this guy there's some more treasure to be found never heard the studio version and now I don't want to this was Leonard at his finest thanks for the fine production hats off to you Quality shows and know you are blessed for being a part of a great performance

I keep thinking what a trip it must have been for the backup singer at the end of the line closest to Leonard to have him leering at her while she sang with him. :) Great performance here.
It doesn't look as if she minds too much, she puts her hand on his back at the start of the performance. He's a sexy guy tho for all he's not young any more.
i wish i got to c his concerts when he was still hangin around but he had to close up shop he was 1 of the greats of canandain singers dude rulz for shoo
This is a great performance! I agree the live version is much better than the recorded one. Leonard Cohen loves women, and that's obvious here. I like the energy of the crowd. Usually his live performances are rather somber, but this one is full of life. You really got the best out of him here. (Sorry if this is a duplicate -- I tried to post something earlier and wasn't sure what happened.)
The only guy who could ever remember all those fabulous lyrics has to be the guy who wrote them. Cohen is totally awesome. That band and those singers are fabulous.
@qualityshows I love this performance. I'm a huge fan of Leonard Cohen. He has a few different sides to his personality, and this is one you don't see very often. Everyone coments on the interaction with the back up singers. If you know his oeuvre, that's no surprise :) I see the comments below about the performance becoming more polished with practice, but I like the rawness of this one. You got the best out of him here!
I love when you guys comment, positive or negative, but a1000kissesdeep is a great example of the kind of comment I love even more! He/she may think they're unrehearsed while I love that, because we're watching them creating the finished product, which, to be quite frank, isn't as good on the CD as it is on my show -- which is LIVE TO AIR! No retakes like lameass American shows. No net. Leonard Cohen is a genius and knows risks and rose to the occasion.
They're still bit unrehearsed as this show happened few months before the 1993 tour :)) The song has up and downs in the rhythm. Later, the song and band sounded much softer and fluid, that guitar riff wasn't used anymore, and of course, Cohen's voice was better and prepared for the tour.
Excellent atmosphere and the sight-seeing of Leonard - thank you very much, had this for years on CDR but never saw the actual clip.
Now I wonder - except from his band, there are some other people (show's musicians?) on the stage. Maybe that's the reason for the "improvisational" sound, but nevertheless, super live version, real jam.
Hey thanks for your insight and experience. I still prefer my show's version to the recorded one. He played to the girls and the audience and the reality of the moment of live to air TV is the musical equivalent of SNL (which I also worked on).
There is a little Tom Waits groove in Leonard Cohen. Joe B does a great job of capturing that smoky club ambience - great sound in this video. Good work Joe B.
Looking forward to the new album
