Because of his lack of formal training he just did what he thought sounded good...While I think formal education is great thing and very valuable you can only teach so much about jazz. Either a cat has something to say or he is just running scales.
Because you're not Wes... Just because you're insecure it doesn't mean you're bad, obviously. I think insecurity makes you strive to break through it, and become even better.
So glad to find this -- one of my favorite jazz CDs of all time. Stablemates may be my favorite jazz tune. Learn to sing or play one of Wes' solos by heart and you will be converted! I never realized Wes had any insecurities about his playing. Watch his face on some other YouTube videos of Wes and you see a guy who seems totally relaxed and in control.
