  • do the trumpeters also make the noise which sounds like horse neighing with this technique?

    sort of average. The only special thing about it is that it was made for me by Dave Monette, around 1989. My trumpet prof is buddies w/ him and I got attention on the horn that there is no way I could afford now. The horns now go for upwards of 6 grand. Wonderful horns. check out his YouTube channel for lots of great players....

  • I always half valved to a certain degree when I did this. Does that degrade the sound much?

    Yeah, I often use a slight half-valve, too. I like the way it sounds, too, depending on the musical setting. Focus on the sound you're hearing in your head--what you consider to be the perfect sound--and then make the horn do that. Listen to yourself doing a flip and assess whether it's equal to the ideal sound you imagine...
