  • Cricket is such an interesting sport to watch. Bowling well is a lot harder than it looks.

  • cricket is cool. so is baseball

  • what suitable for Americans is t20.internationals. it's short and fun. the ground should not be much long or short. there should be maximum oppotunities for fans to enjoy the match. in sri lanka t20 match is more like a party. it is better if american cricket board can arrange a premier league like indian premier league or sri lankan premier league

  • not out at 4:05

  • So kids of USA, this was the first lecture on Cricket!

  • what a fucking queer sport

  • @TheDenzel2112 It's so queer, it spawned baseball. Go figure.

  • Does the ball have to hit the ground or is that just the way it's bowled?

  • @WorldChallenge

    its just bowlrd tat way

  • @WorldChallenge

    its just bowlrd tat way

its just to get him out man by either swinging it or seaming it or spining it

  • @WorldChallenge No, it doesn't have to bounce. As long as it is below waist height when it reaches the batter OR it has bounced just once and it is within reach of the batter.... i.e. not bouncing way over the batter's head or way to either side.

  • @WorldChallenge technically as long as it's below the waist without bouncing it's a legal ball, however most good players can hit that type of ball (called a full toss ) very easily. so it's best to bounce it , as you can use the seam to get movement both ways as well as high bounce.

  • Stupid Americans comparing cricket with baseball wen its nowhere near enuff

  • shane warne will be a living legend forever ......apart from being a "playboy". Amen.

  • I did'nt know america had cricket.

  • Superb but i think it can be still better.

  • Warne took drugs. Delete his records DRUGGIE!!! DELETE ALL HIS RECORDS! yes .

  • if pitchers could have a running start and crow hop in baseball they would be throwing 100 mph on average instead of 95.

  • @ImBordCanYouTell Yeah may be, but in Cricket the bowlers (pitchers) should not bend their elbow while pitching, the forward ball motion should only be due rotation at the shoulder and not due to any motion at the arm elbow.

  • @ImBordCanYouTell But the difference is, you see, cricket bowlers MUST keep their arm straight whilst bowling; It's a 'windmill' style action. Try it for yourself and you'll find it's impossible to generate real pace on the ball. This is why a run up is needed. Baseball pitchers, as you know, are able to generate pace by bending the arm and throwing the ball. This action would be illegal in cricket.

  • 5.LBW (leg before wicket), where the ball which would have hit the stumps, hits the batsman who is in the way of the stumps . (However, the ball must not pitch outside leg stump and must impact the batsman in line with the stumps)

There are a few more trivial ways of getting out eg. obstructing the field, handling the ball, but are extremely rare.

  • There should be a video on the ways a batsman can get out. The main ways are:

    1. Bowled out when the ball hits the wickets.

    2. Caught on the full when the ball has hit the bat or glove of the batsman.

    3. Run out, when the fielding team dislodges the bails when a batsman has not returned to his crease quick enough when running between the wickets.

    4. Stumped, when the batsman leaves the crease during a bowling delivery and the wicket keeper dislodges the bails.

  • Tim lincecum is a really bowler...

  • @THAOGBulletseed Bowling full tosses doesn't count. Those get hit for a six.

  • this is a response to VictorLepanto inquire. Running up does enable a bowler or u might say a pitcher. baseball pitchers achieve similar speed because they are allowed to bend their elbow and actually throw the ball but in cricket bending the elbow is illegal. i guess i answer your question. baseball is throwing and cricket is bowling. running up does enable the bowler to gain momentum and speed. if you look at the slower bowlers (spin bowler) their run-up is much shorter.

  • 2:53 Is that asshole catching illegally knocking the pins off the wickets?

Is that a cheat or what?

  • @cadu1995

lmao! no he is not cheating, if the batsman leaves the crease (the white line) and he misses the ball, the wicket keeper is allowed to stump him providing the keeper has the ball in his hands.

  • 2:25 O that's Nasty!!! Dang even I couldn't hit that.

  • @ahtartersauce101 :What about 2:20?Would you have the guts to stand and wait for that superfast ball?

Very few of us could even see it.

  • actually it's more of a HOWZAT ! & it's a yell to ask the umpire to adjudicate .

  • @aussiefox

Actually it is asking(apealing) the umpire "HOW IS THAT", that later became HOWZAT !!!

  • @aussiefox

In the late 80s a professional Aussie left arm spinner played for my club in England for a season (which was cool!). He used to get frustrated with the standard of umpiring in the league though. One game, he went up for a stone cold LBW and got turned down. Tired of this, when he hit the pads next ball (he was a great bowler) and yelled very loudly: "Howthefuckwasthatone!" Shocked, the umpire triggered the guy. Marvellous appeal, that.

  • The main difference between baseball and cricket:

Baseball: When a batter gets out, sometimes people don't say anything.

Cricket: When a batsman gets out, it is mandatory to yell "Ahhhh! Yeaaah!"

  • i love the ''this is cricket'' series.

  • This is about LBW- If the ball hits your pad and the bowler has bowled it on the Leg side are you out?

  • @TangleDudeXtreme LBW= Leg before Wicket. meaning that if the batsman's leg was to stop the ball in a trajectory that would hit the stumps or the bails, then the batsman is out. So irrespective of what side the baller is on.

  • Test

  • Is it common for the ball to hit the stumps and not dislodge the bails? The way I understand this, the batter is not out but the "ball" does count as one of the six thrown.

  • @USAFABulldog G'day , no it's not very common for the ball to hit the stumps/wickets and not dislodge the bails. Although i have seen it happen , in that case if no bail is removed the batsman is not out, normally it happens when say the batsman hits the ball into the ground, and it rolls back and just touches the stumps.

  • Cricket noob question: Can fielders be bowlers too? (Like in football, the defender can act as a center-forward if they are desperate for a goal.) Or are they limited to one position only?

  • @silasha G'day , no, anyone of the 11 players on the field can bowl if they have the skill. some players are predominantly batsman , but bowl occasionally , a few can do both bat & bowl pretty well , and a few can't hold a bat hardly at all.

  • @aussiefox Alright, thank you! :)

  • Comment removed

  • So there are bowlers who rely on power and speed and those who rely and control and technique.

    Interesting.

  • i would like to see the Yankees lineup crush sixes in this game

  • lol well it would be very difficult for them. The american u/19 team could only manage 4 against ireland's.

  • 2:30 That off-spinner was Warne-like, drifted heaps and bowled around stumps

  • 1:57 UFO!!

  • where?

  • haha meant to be a joke, was looking at that huge thing behind him shaped like a ufo.

  • good luck!

  • I think aussies rule in cricket forever

  • Think the Aussies need to see this vid...;)

  • Hehe ownd.

  • Still think that?

  • is that lords nursery ground

  • WOOOO SCOTLAND!!!

  • we should have cricket in US. i think alot of people would play since we are so diversed.

  • sick spin at 3.46

  • i just joined my first team and i open the bowling xD :-)

  • Lol, im just a slow bowler, not even a spinner, that often confuses the batsmen and they try to slog it, completely miss and thats the middle stump for me, my team usually put me on after a fast bowler because its hard for the batsman to adapt to the change in pace.

  • really gud video m8

  • Razzaq Rocks

  • The 2:17 that shoaib akthar on was terrific and un playable do any one agree?

  • I totally agree with you, sooo much pace and inswing to the batsman absolutaly unplayable...!

  • thx dude

  • yeah that's true

  • wow i never thought there was a thing called a over....amazed??..lol

  • I AM SCARED OF SHANE WARNE

  • China said they will spent 1 billion dollar for cricket promotion comming years.

  • haa cricket america

  • i think 20 /20 cricket must be a part of Olympics.

  • I agree fully.

  • @generationnext9000

YES! Cricket shud just be an Olympic sport period so shud baseball and softball.

  • Crickets the number 1 summer sport FULL STOP

  • Cricket's the number 1 sport, FULL STOP.

  • There was,nor is,nor will be a bowler like Wasim Akram.Bowling is known by wasim akram! Best Ever Legend Wasim Akram!

  • A full ball is far easier to hit than a swinging or spinning ball, despite the superior pace of a full ball. There is no room for subtlety in baseball. A spinner of the calibre of Shane Warne can never find a place in Baseball, simply because he relies on guile and variations in pace below the 60 mph mark. Adam Gilchrist of Australia and Sanath Jayasuriya of Srilanka will be smacking their lips anticipating full pitches without having to bother countering the swing or spin!!

  • Hi there,

You mustn't judge so quickly. While fast bowlers do bowl near the 100MPH mark, there are some extremely guileful slow bowlers called spinners and the good ones are dreaded as though they bowl at around 60-65 mph, they end up spinning the ball and deceiving the batter. Also, cricket batters would relish the opportunity of hitting a ball without bouncing (full toss). In fact if it was known to them beforehand that the ball isn't going to bounce, they would never get out!

  • Mate, I wish i could face fast bowlers all day, they are MUCH easier to face. Any time a spinner is brought, i'm off :P

  • Rod MArsh once said "Anyone who says they enjoy facing fast bowling is a liar or an idiot..." I don't enjoy facing full pace, but I can see why people would...

  • if u got good technique then facing fast bowlers might be easier because you can just use the pace of the bowler to "guide" the ball to any place behind the wickets...

  • excellent footwork and flexible wrists...if u have these 2 things then facing fast bowlers it alot of fun...but yeah these quality are insanely rare...seen very very few batsman with them like zaheer abbas, saeeed anwar, gary kirsten and brian lara.

  • Pace is much easier to face for me than spin, I don't have particularly very good footwork and quick bowlers come on to the bat nicely. It's not like I'm facing Akhtar or anything lol.

  • lol yea his bowling is really fast.........i think his fastest one was 101 mph! but it was above 100

  • The fielders change ends..

Why do you always see the field scatter after every over?

    They are swapping sides :O

It's not the batsmen changing ends..

  • i'm from england, and I've always wanted to see a full length baseball game. my brother is in America and says it is boring though. i can never find a match on british tv, unlike american football

  • Crickets da best

  • if u really want to see bowling look up westindies fast bowlers.

  • I'm just saying that the USA team needs to get better, I want to see them in the next one day or twenty world cup, it would be great for them and the game. I'm originally from Australia, and I also live in Georgia! :) Go all the way mate if the USA recuits you, give a 110% and I'll see you on the telly in the world cup eh? Cheers mate!

  • let's hope the USA gets good enough to at least make it to the world cup.

  • i got a question. and by the way i watched your other video on this about the all around idea of cricket.but every time someone is over, does the striker go to the other side, and does the bowler throw to what was his back side or is that the other teams batting wicket. does that make a lot of sense? if not, just dont reply, and im only talking to aussiefox, unless you have the correct answer. srry this is so long

  • the batsmen stay where they are. at the end of the over a new bowler starts bowling from the other side.

but in practice-games it doesn't really matter.

  • I think you mean to ask if the batsmen switch ends at the end of the over. If so, then the answer is no, the next bowler bowls from the opposite end and the batsmen stay at their ends. Playing in streets or indoors, its usually more practically for batsmen to switch ends instead of the fielding team changing their whole field setting. Hope that made sense.

  • I live in Japan. A few other expat aussies, pommies, kiwis etc are working hard to get the game going here. We now have a few teams, and a decent national side. What are the chances of a USA v Japan game happening soon?

  • i would like america to learn to play and enjoy cricket instead of making fun of it all the time

  • running a long distance isn't important. it help the bowler get int a rhythm, there isn't a rule it personal preferance.

  • Does it really help running like a really long distance when throwing a fast ball?

I don't see how running more than 10 ft. could make much of a difference.

Is there a rule for how far they have to run if they do?

  • its not throwing in the first place, and so it makes a huge difference to how fast the ball is delivered. The more momentum you get behind the ball, the faster it comes out. How far you run depends completely on the person bowling. Typically its long enough so that you accelerate all the way and hit top speed when you reach the point of delivery.

  • G'day , this could actually be a bit misleading.

the distance run DOES NOT = Pace of Ball, although some runup is needed by the fastest bowlers , the distance varies a great deal while speed remains the same. If we look at all the world bowlers that bowl at 140KPH & up , 15 to 30 yards for runups is the norm.

  • @aussiefox: Has there been any sports physics studies on bowling? I have to doubt that this running up of the bowler business really works. Maybe if there is no set point @ which he releases the ball, it might be useful for confusing the batter. Otherwise, I don't how it adds momentum to the ball. Baseball pitchers achieve comparable speeds. & I am not inviting a discussion of how the two sports are different. The physics of ball throwing remains the same.

  • @VictorLepanto

G'day , while i'm not that knowledgeable on the physics of bowling the big difference here is the fact that the elbow is not bent and the arm remains straight.

Here is a couple of links that can explain it better then i can.

    Regards

    Aussiefox

  • @VictorLepanto

    pitchvision(dottiecommie)/how-to-bowl-fast

  • @VictorLepanto This is a really entertaining and educational show on the science of cricket. I think it's exactly what you're lookin' for.

    watch?v=naMJz2KlLoA

  • @VictorLepanto Well the reason baseball pitchers get comparable speed it because they're pitching (illegal in cricket) which means they can bent their elbow. a lot of their speed comes from the sling action that causes. for cricket bowlers, the elbow has to stay straight, and additional arm velocity is achieved with the forward momentum at the end of a run up. Some spin bowlers don't run up at all, because speed isn't a concern. But even if a run up only gave +1 kph, a pace bowler would do it.

  • @adraim69: it is funny that pitching is illegal in Cricket & bean balls (throwing @ the batter) is legal. Though, I think an actual been ball is illegal. They can't throw it at the batter's head I don't think. It seems precise throwing is a higher premium in Cricket. In Baseball, you only need to stay in the strike area. Thus pure speed becomes the premium. I still have serious doubts as to the real utility of this run up. Shot putters don't run up. Pure tradition I think.

  • @VictorLepanto Well in the case of shotput they're not allowed to run up. A run up would surely add dozens of yards to their throw. I mean don't take my word for it, try a shotput (with a tennis ball or something) standing still, then see how much smoother and faster it is with a run up.

  • It could be a bot misleading to say that the longer you run the faster you bowl, most people just run longer so they can get in rhythm prior to bowling as well as gain momentum.

  • mate, if you took time to read my whole comment you would realise that you're just repeating what im saying. i did not say that the pace of the delivery relies on the length of your run up alone.

  • exactly, look at simon jones, he runs in from 10 paces and bowls 95mph, brett lee runs in from a million miles away and bowls 2mph quicker, work out y lee just put more emphasis into his action

  • so if the catcher catches the ball he could knock down the wicket?

  • yes but as long as he is out of his area (crease)

  • if the catcher catches the ball, the batsman is then out. there is no chance of running out the other batsman. "knocking down the wicket" ok? :)

  • I love cricket, for me there is nothing better than taking a week off in the summer for a 5 day test. However I love the one dayers and the 20/20 matches are fantastic. Cricket is only boring if you don't understand the rules. I have been on the edge of my seat many a time at a test, Oh god I miss England!!

  • true...I love Test cricket - it's so intriguing to watch, especially if the Test match is close and competitive

  • You are from the old school, mate. Test matches is everything for me!! Love the atmosphere and a long winding match that goes to the wire. Even a draw is interesting at times.

  • :) A very good reply. I have never seen cricket live but I hope to in the future.

  • :) thanks. thats generous of you. i was worried you'd come up with another argument and i'd have to come up something else lol. but seriously on the outside cricket really looks boring. besides who has got time to watch 5 days of sport. but you can watch the shorter versions of the game. theres the one day international which is still 8 hrs long but theres a new sensation these days called 20/20 which is abt 4 hours long.

  • but these are like pop music. if you really wanna go for classical music then i suggest you see some highlights of classics from yesteryears which can be found on youtube, to warm up to the game. sometimes it goes on for 5 days only to end up with a draw which is frustrating for fans. but once you understand the game you would really appreciate how the fortunes swing and it gets really exciting on the last day many a times.

  • there has been plenty of test matches where the last hour of the last day meant everything for the result and thats just mind blowing. and the clash of egos is something to behold in these situations.

  • such a video i have not seen befor.the quality is good ..sorry....the best.one should visit the site for such online treat.

  • It looks like an interesting game. I saw it played years ago in a park in Victoria Canada when I was a kid and our family was on vacation.

  • Verrrry.. good..and informative. Thanks for uploading..!!

  • Good work.Thank god no background rap music.

  • Not too bad - pretty good overview!

  • The video can't be that old, at one point you see the press centre at Lords and that isn't so old

  • good work =D

  • rofl its way good and i should now as im a cricket player =p

  • Where is Murali?

  • Would we really want to teach people to bowl like that.

  • cool post.

  • pretty good coverage.

  • good work aussiefox

  • good stuff.

  • i slog both for 4 or 6 lol

  • very good

  • It depends how good the bowler is. Spin and pace both take skill and if done right both take loads of wickets.

  • im a left arm leg spinner and spin bowling is really good if u can master it at a young age u can laugh at batsmen because u wont be played at

  • Fast Bowling is so much more fun than Spin bowling, what do you think? Both are great to watch!

  • Shane Warne

  • I like both although to be honest there's nothing better than good swing bowling imo. espiecally Matthew Hoggard and Simon Jones.

  • Well that's just a matter of opinion(which is never wrong), I personally prefer faster bowlers being 1 myself.

  • Cricket is one game where you dont enjoy advantage if u r just built like a giant; that's why u c many short & slim men playing it. Sachin, Lara, Gavaskar are all short. There are some like Freddie who take the advantage of a well built body, but they wouldn't have done it without skill

  • Cricket is actually the most played bat and ball sport in the world (and this includes tennis)! We even play it over here in -25 temperatures in Estonia! Check out my film of Ice Cricket in Tallinn!

  • Great video for beginners
