Some consider marriage to be an age-long institution binding a woman to a man as a first step for biological procreation, they believe it would lose all value if it were applied to gays. It doesn't mean they don't believe gays can love eachother. Some are ok for a status binding gays by law, but not the same institution (marriage), because they're different.

@BlankVellum Marriage has been since the beginning of civilization an institution for encouraging procreation - sterile couples being the unfortunate few - uniting families together through blood. Even in secular countries, like France where I'm from, couples are encouraged by the mayor during the wedding ceremony to have children. Only recently has marriage not been synonymous to making children... for some. Not for the more traditional type. And I get that.

And that is assuming that your traditional view of marriage is valid today, which it isn't. Marriage is now seen as a union between two adults who love each other, and who want that union recognized officially. Reproduction is orthogonal.

I am going to assume that atheists are more likely to be accepting of homosexuality than theists. On the whole, atheists tend to be more liberal, while theists are more conservative. My hypothesis is that even atheist homophobes are indirectly taken in by the same hegemony: the mythos of the homosexual as the traitor or failure to the gender that so-called hicks purport is caused by religion, but it's trickled down without its root cause. It's really weird.
I am an atheist, I'm pescatarian, and I have no problem with any age, sex, sexuality, religion, or race. People who so have problems need to think about the way they are treating these people and how to stop it, or how to be less open/influential about it. Most of the time people aren't particularly obsessed with these things, so it's better just to let it be and stay away. Even if you don't like these people, you can easily just leave them be, and if they're so bad, let them corrupt themselves.
I don't think it's so much that religion - christianity - causes its adherents to dislike gays so much, rather more that christianity attracts people who dislike gays in part because it condemns them.
I was homophobic when I was a religious person. I was simply raised that way, brainwashed to be afraid of atheists and homosexuals. When I learned that atheists were actually nothing to be afraid of, it was easy to cut away the irrational prejudice I felt towards gay people. I have learned since then that several of my friends were gay all along, but they never wanted to tell me before for fear of how I would respond. I'm not ashamed of who I was, because I managed to escape my upbringing.

Some consider marriage to be an age-long institution binding a woman to a man as a first step for biological procreation, they believe it would lose all value if it were applied to gays. Even in secular countries, like France where I'm from, couples are encouraged by the mayor during the wedding ceremony to have children. And that is assuming that your traditional view of marriage is valid today, which it isn't. Marriage is now seen as a union between two adults who love each other, and who want that union recognized officially. Reproduction is orthogonal.

I am going to assume that atheists are more likely to be accepting of homosexuality than theists. On the whole, atheists tend to be more liberal, while theists are more conservative. When I learned that atheists were actually nothing to be afraid of, it was easy to cut away the irrational prejudice I felt towards gay people. I have learned since then that several of my friends were gay all along, but they never wanted to tell me before for fear of how I would respond. I'm not ashamed of who I was, because I managed to escape my upbringing.

i am atheist, more specifically a septic. i question everything and anything. regrettably this is not required to be atheist.
i respect and admire the homosexual community. you deal with so much from all sides and still stand firm and remain true to yourselves. I only offer these words of support at this time.
don't give up and keep going progress and change doesn't happen without by itself. Just be true to yourself and let know one say who you are
