  • The most popular body mod on Southern California Stingrays (especially 1963 to 1965 was to remove the backup- lights; replace them with tailights and then add 2 more inlight inboard next to the licence plate - giving a total of 3 per side = "6 tailights" I even still have a copy of the magazines "Speed and Custom" outling how to do this without even needing a new paint job!!

  • id take old then new any day

  • I've always wondered why the song says "all the Jag could see was my 6 taillights" . Correct me if I'm wrong , but I can't think of any Vette that ever came with 6 taillights.

  • @Junglemon1... I think owners icould buy a set with two additional back lights that could be mounted next to the original lights. That makes 3 at each side. I don't know the reason, I can imagine that it had to do with 'being a look-a-like' Ferrari or other 6 tail lights car

  • @HenriMusicBox 63 to 67 vetts had 2 lites each side, as you know....there was a custom kit available as an after market custom addition that had an extra lite. They were referred to as 'California tail lights'. or a "California kit" It was the most common customizing done in the day.

  • @Junglemon1 The six taillights was a customized job some would install.

    acorn2503

  • @Junglemon1 Hi. I think '63 Vette had 6 tail lights.

  • went racing on dead mans curve in my toyota prius... easily beat a dodge charger

  • @rayray66 You go dude! That's just too amazing. Have you tried a VW Bug? Thanks for the smile.

  • @rayray66

Yeah a 78 charger but that guy had a better ride and an 8 track

  • I swear I actually replayed this race for real one night with a Lincoln Town Car vs. a Jag x type. Going up Essington Ave it was all good till the light at 67th street. I checked up, the jag tried to take the curve into Passyunk Ave. Result???? Same as the song. Jag bounced off the wall & into the oil refinery fence.... Jag loses again.

  • @829012 What can I say, I was a fast limo driver. And smart enough try a 90 degree curve at 80 mph. Needless to say did not stick around. Lincoln Town car top speed for the curious? 110 mph limit by the computer.

  • The Jag must of had a chevy engine in it.

  • And whats up with the Idea with the rubber chicken?

  • @MLarson01 probably to represent that the guy he was taunting was a chicken... They were being silly!

  • what year do you think that vette was??

  • @MLarson01 i saw the same thing its supposed to be an older version in the song butt this is a c4 made in the 80's thats a huge video flaw

  • @westonator6

He says hes crusing in his stingray thats an earlys 60 corvette that had a shitload of horse power. I don't know the date of this video but I don't think thats a corvette zr1

  • I LOVE Jan and Dean. I love the classic cars and they sang some wonderful songs about them. I love Drag City too. Their songs make me very happy. They were beautiful together. Thanks guys.

  • The reason the Jag pulled into the curve and the Stingray couldn't was because the Jag had a rubber chicken in the passenger seat. The extra 2 ounces allowed for better weight distribution.

  • I've heard that stupid anti-Corvette/pro-Corvette fight over and over again so many times it makes me ill. People will like the cars they like.. No need for personal insults. Variety is what makes the world go round. I can appreciate all sorts of cars: Muscle cars, Corvettes, Mustangs, '50s cars, European sports cars, Cobras, and lots of others.. Corvettes are my favorite, and I've owned one (a '65), but I don't think that anyone who dislikes Corvettes is a moron (just unenlightened :-) )

  • its funny because its a porsche and vette

  • @TerribleThree thats a late 60s early 70s Jag XKE not a porsche it kinda looks like a 911 in the rear though

  • that aint no Stingray

  • This was a great song and it almost took the life of jan berry he was never the same RIp Jan Berry

  • 1960's American Stingray couldn't corner? Shocker. Did not see that coming. Skinny tires while in a high speed turn, not a winning formula on 'Deadmans Curve'. Thousand bucks says Deadman's Curve is a flat turn 30mph zone, not banked in the slightest bit.

  • It's not the curve's fault, it's the drivers fault. The moment you disrespect the curve, the curve disrespects you.

  • It was Jan Berry who was respected as a record producer NOT Dean Torence. Brain Wilson and Jan Berry learned a great deal from each other record wise, this according to Brian hisself. . The Beach Boys and Jan and Dean were all friends and sang background on each others records when ever possable. Dean sings on the BB song BARBRA ANNE just to name one. Sorry I dont like this cover it s insulting to Jan Berry AND to Jan and Dean.

  • vettes are a rich mans toy... aka people that are to scared to turn a wrench and/or get dirty.

  • @silverado271 No they're not!! My dad bought one in 1990(still has it) and my family isnt rich by any means!! I own a tire shop in my home town and my dad and I both, arent affraid to get dirty!! Your barking up the wrong tree kid!!!

  • @nickthastick i dont give a god damn if your rich daddy owns a corvette or not. there peices of shit. and i doubt you or your daddy even know how to work on the damn thing.. If your daddy knew what performance WAS he wouldnt have got a vette to begin with. ...call me kid, what are you 13? I'be built more motors than you have pubes. ope!! go hurry! count them just to make sure! ... fuck off your moms callin u for dinner.

  • @silverado271 Go fuck yourself asshole!! In 1988, same year your mom was arrested for prostitution, the vette was cheap and fast, like your mom!!! If you ever talk to me like that on the internet again, i will look up your mom and slap her across the face for making you such a duche bag!!! Fuck off prick!!!

  • @nickthastick that was fuckin hilarious. ...your allright Nick.

  • @silverado271 Thank you sir, your not to bad yourself. I dont see the vette as a rich mans car. My dad has had two jobs his entire life and it pisses me off to hear people talk trash about american sports cars.... its not the greatest car by any strech, but it always puts a smile on your face when you drive it!! Thats all you can ask for in a 23 year old car!!

  • @nickthastick ill respect what you say about the corvette.. i understand that not all vettes are owned my rich people.. and they are fun to drive.. its just.. my list is entirely to long to explain as to why i hate corvettes.. but as long as they stay in the class as you said "sports car" and not a "hotrod" ill keep me mouth shut.

  • @silverado271 My opinion, the last vette that was a "muscle car" was probably the 67 with the 427, or the 63 split window with the ZO6 option!! Even then, they still weren't that fast. Im partial to Pontiac, my dad is a bowtie fan. I could go on for days about both, but muscle cars are supposed to be loud and obnoxious, thats why people (including me) love them. Still wish i had my Trans Am.

  • I love corvetts own 2 bought my first one in 1968 still have it

  • is that Peter Cetera in the XKE?

  • Jan & Dean belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

They had many hits, fans and helped to create sounds that were legendary.

J&D and the Beach Boys created the California surf sound that helped to define the 1960's.

I shake my head at some of the acts already in the Hall.

Many did not do half of what Jan & Dean did.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • @GeorgeVreelandHill I totally agree that they belong in the rock and roll hall of fame. Is there a way that we create a way to help make it a reality,

  • @GeorgeVreelandHill Well said

  • In reality, in a straight line, the Stingray would most likely taken the Jag. When they got to "the curve" the dead man would have been driving the 'vette, as any petrol head worth anything knows, they couldn't corner or stop for shit...

  • @54MURAI Yeah! but this was about a Drag race, perhaps the guy in the Jag. Shoulda just kept his mouth shut.

  • This must have been filmed in my neighborhood. We've got traffic lights that long, too.

  • 9 People didn't come back from dead man's curve

  • drag racing sucks. idiots kill themselves

  • No Stingray

  • One of them was injured in an auto accident. When they went on tour they had to lip sync.

  • That chokin' the chicken cracks me up! Jan and Dean had a lot of good tunes in their day. How about someone throwing some my way?

  • These people copied blink-182's song!!!

  • @Kenny2k08 are you serious?

  • @Kenny2k08 are you that fucking retarded?

  • @Kenny2k08 im a blink fan and i must say your fucked in the head -.- yes a band from like the 60's stole from a band of the 2000's ...idiot

  • @CVcivilrights lol it's funny how people can't tell I'm trolling. I'm starting to question everyone's intelligence for taking that comment seriously hahaha

  • @Kenny2k08 why bother trolling that is the epitome of de-evolution within itself.

  • @CVcivilrights I just wanted to see if anyone would actually fall for it lmao

  • Great song from the 60's

  • "Slick Jimmy Don Clyde - Undefeated Drag Racer" et al.

  • When he says my mills ruin fine whut does that mean im a young gun so ya but i love this type of music today stuff is not the bees knees

  • Dude Jan and Dean are the shit. I can' believe I didn't know them before

  • Dude only has four tail lights shoulda used an older vette

  • ahahahahaha that guy in the jags a tool whoi carries a rubber chicken?

  • Places to play: A park,a swimming pool, miniature golf,Six Flags, the beach & even your own backyard. Notice that Dead Mans Curve does NOT appear on that list.

  • I agree with you on the feel it was very well done on the same note.

Did you know that the corvette with 6 tail lights that was built in 1962 ,was actually 2 taillights and one back up light?

  • note the vette in the video an 80's car not 60's that wasn't a stingray

  • @MsAutobodyman What can you say, it was a low budget production. It still gives you the feel though of what they were singing about though. I wanted to remake this video with my 2003 Z06 corvette but I knew everyone would rip it apart the same way.

Did you also notice this version was recorded one semitone higher?

  • @MsAutobodyman And the Series 1 Jag (I think the headlights are hooded) is 'brand new.' Must be a Stephen Spielberg thing here...

  • I dig Jan & Dean and most of their music. This video is a slap in the face to them.

Could the fellow who put that thing together find two more fruitier guys to portray

    the racers?

  • Did I see the guy in the Jag choke his chicken?

  • Wow that's dean torrence in this vid isn't it? Cool!

  • All the Jag could se was my 6, I mean 4 tail lights. lol always a good song even with modern vette :)

  • the jag crashed not the stingray

  • Good old Dean Torrence! Kidding around as usual. I love his corny but humorous introduction to this song! Actually, the version of "Deadman's Curve" that plays in the video is not the original hit recording from 1964 in which Jan Berry sang lead. I believe this version is a re-recorded version from the 70's which featured Dean singing leads and some backgrounds as well. Good stuff though!

  • @mrderekevan Lets face it . Jan was the man Dean just cant produce it as well.

  • @ngnnick1967 True. Dean couldn't produce as well. In my opnion, he couldn't sing or write as well as Jan either, although I did like his falsetto and some of his lead vocals. I'm still a huge fan of both guys though, and always will be. Certainly beats most of the music that comes out today. Well, except for my music. My music's great! The boys down at the plant love my music! (LOL. Inside joke).

  • Buckle up and watch for flashing lights!

  • that shit is so old

  • That's why you shouldn't race, you could not only hurt yourself, but you could hurt someone else.

  • @SphinxFriend But racing is fun. The thrill of hauling ass is fun. =]

  • @th3und34d0wn u said theeeee *A* word im telling u ass whole

  • R.I.P. Jan.

  • "I flew past LaBrea, Schwab's, and Crescent Heights

And all the Jag could see were my six taillights"

It was a popular customizing idea to add an extra tail light to each side of the '63 to '67 Corvette Sting Ray, giving it 6 tail lights. It looked cool and was a cheap way to customize the car.

  • It appears as a C4 'Vette' racing a modified XKE: notice what appears to be radius wheel wells... It might have been a V-8 conversion or something.

I've driven both (Vette '96) and the Jag (1966) which the latter is definitely a more fine EU type of performer. While a C4 does it all everywhere! Thank you for this posting. NOTE: I still have the Vette...

  • What a challenging song, "Dead Man's Curve"!!!

It was a hit song for Jan & Dean in 1964. Eerily, it was to almost become their banner song in real life. Jan Berry's horrific Corvette car crash in 1966, near to the real Dead Man's Curve in southern California, impacted both his and Dean Torrence's lives.

The Jan Berry Center of southern CA is devoted to Jan's desire to succeed in life despite a traumatic brain injury.

Right up to their final performance in 2004, they remained friends. RIP

  • @hellgate67 Yes, they were true friends from high school untill Jan s death. I never had a brain injury but I was born with 2 disabilities in 1955 so Jan is a person who blessed my life with music AND became a person who inspired me when he came back on the stage aftr haveing to deal with his own disabilities. . Even with his limitations Jan went on stage and sang HE SHOWED THEM. . And Dean bless his heart understood the meaning of REAL friendship. I miss Jan . Rock on Dean. RIP my sweet Jan

  • @hellgate67 Yes, Dean was a True friend to Jan that didnt change after the accindent and Dean deserves lots of respect for that alone. Jan, well....he showed THEM. Yes, you can be disabled and still do what you love . Maybe it s not easey but who says life is easey... Jan is my heroe and mentor / inspiration. Rock on dear Dean. RIP my sweet Jan.

  • so this is what stan was talking about on the bridge

  • This is not the originally-released, authentic version of this great song. However, when released in Winter 1963, this classic song quickly raced up the charts, & peaked at No. 5 on the Top 40. Jan Berry was a whiz in the studio .. the original production of this song featured 18 background vocal overdubs .. count 'em .. 18.

  • they should have used a old vette. they took the time to find the jag. and actualy race them, instead of speeding up the tape.

  • Not the original so..............

  • Is that Stacey David in the Vette?

  • the rubber chicken........ wasn't optional!

  • GOOD JOB!!

  • Should have been a 1963 Corvette, not a 1986 one.

  • when he says "and all the jag could see were my 6 taillights" shouldnt it be 4.....

  • @eazzye6 The song was probably about a 1963 split window coupe Stingray - and they couldn't find one for this video - so they used a more recent corvette. Google pics of the 1963 coupe and you'll see how cool 6 tail lights were :D

  • @eazzye6 A popular mod to stingrays was to have to two more brake lights "glassed" in.

  • It's not the original and it's just not the same

  • its gay to put a "modern vette" with a classic XKE at least get a freakin' 'RAY at the lights!

  • why was he choking the chicken? :P lol

  • @clifgreen3 CAUSE IT FEELS GOOD.

  • Yes, too bad the vintage tin and glass wasn't used for this...and the original vinyl cut was better even if it was "garage oriented." I've been to the famous crossing of Sunset and Doheny, Abbey Road and Times Square, but of all 3, Sunset & Doheny took me back in a time travel 4 wheel rocket-style.

  • El himno de las carreras callejeras.

  • The E-type is my favorite all time best looking car.

My wife minivan does 0-60 in under 7. It's a stupid minivan. Who would have thought.

    I want an E-type.

  • well he actually had a really bad accident

  • @breznev64 It was Jan Berry that had the accident not the one in this video which is Dean Torrence.

  • Is that Al Gore at the beginning?

  • atualy its an 85, 84s had diff tail lights

  • @alex73ification My 84 and 85 Corvettes have the exact same tail lights. They all had the same tail lights from 84 to 90.

  • the video shows wheel covers on an 84 corvette.

  • yeah, or an 85. They both have black painted centers. My 84 has black metal covers over the lug nuts, and my 85 has black plastic lug nut covers. Its one or the other though.

  • @alex73ification this Corvette in the video sort of resembles a 1990 ZR-1, which still had the thin black belt line and the more angular nose than the 1991+ models had, but it had the rounded rear bumper and smaller square-ish tail lights of the 91-96. This car doesn't have the top mounted 3rd brake light or the correct wheels (these are for an 84-85) for a ZR-1, though. You can buy that type of ZR-1 bumper, aftermarket for an 84/85. Thats what this one looks like to me, anyway.

  • made a typo on the spelling about the ray, I know 76 was the last year cuz my little bro is driving my 76 sting-ray,all options including teloscop stering coluemaround so dakota, and i still say thats a 84 in the vid.

  • Ahhh.. Jan and Dean. The ulimate Lip Sync'ers. Brittany, you got some learning to do.

  • Wow, you don't find too many of those rare Jags with the optional rubber chicken!

  • @quirpco LOL!!!!!!!!!! Hot looking Jag though!!

  • blink cover sounds good 2

  • This is not the original hit and not as good.

  • My Porsche 944 Just laughed!

  • they quit making Sting-rats in 1976,this vette is at least a 84

  • Sting Rays were produced from 1963-1967. They returned in1969-1976 but were Stingrays.(one word)..

  • awesome song. blink 182 covered this pretty well. but this is still better.

  • DEAD MAN'S CURVE is right at UCLA curve at Loyal Marymount school accross the street stoplight.......the curve going west just b4 the stoplight.....

  • That new vette has four tailights, not the six in the song. Not a good represenation of how 16 year olds (! was at the time the song came out) remember the song!! The jag is a pig 2 + 2, not the true convert XKE.

  • Actually Dorf, this Jag is not a 2+2. It's a coupe, and a true roadster E -Type wouldn't have windows to roll down anyway, like in the song. You can tell it's not a 2+2 by the shortness of the window and door, and the slope the rear-end angles downward at.

  • blink 182's much better

  • Comment removed

  • i agree

  • i still perfer the Blink-182 cover.

  • The origianal is the standard by which a song is mesured, while I like much of blink 182s music, it lacks the fullness of the vocals, and goes to fast, they attempt but it does not compare by far.

  • CreepyCrawlyCat - I would go further than that and say Pet Sounds is the finest album ever. I hated it when I first heard it because It was just so unlike any Beach Boys music I had heard, and my pre- conditioned mind could'nt make sence of it. Now I absolutely love it, and have done for years.

  • HAHA

  • yea and one of the Beach Boys was afraid to surf. It was Brian Wilsson, the man who wrote most of their songs. He even wrote some songs for Jan & Dean.

  • Actually only one Beach Boy was a surfer. I think Denny but am not sure. Brian worked a lot with Jan and Dean. Dean Torrence was a mentor to Mike and really taught him about producing records. By the end of his career Brian was consider one of the best producers of all time. Dean was very highly respected as a producer too.

  • jono tinker ur the gay...u dont know a damn thing about dead mans curve...only the surfers know about this

  • Funny thing about Jan & Dean and The Beach Boys is that the suffers of that era really didn't listen to them - the surfers of that era were more into rock.

  • Comment removed

  • this song actualy took place in penslivainia its exactualy the place on the dot

  • Actually this song was about a turn in Los Angeles which has since been widened:

    All streets in Los Angeles:

I flew past LaBrea, Schwab's, and Crescent Heights

  • Sunset Blvd. and Westwood Plaza.

  • I know of only a very few places like that anymore one ahs a cruve that is almost 90 degress it is very difficult to get around it but it can be done because i ahve done it!

    dead man's cruve!

  • FWIW the video clips of the C4 and jag are from blink 182's version of this song

  • You got it backwards. Blink 182 copied those clips from the Jan & Dean video.

    Kids today, *sigh*.

  • I wasn't aware that Jan and dead made a video for deadmans curve. I wonder why they used a C4 instead of a real stingray.

I am no kid. i'm 30, lol. And i saw Jan and Dean in concert back in 1992.

  • I don't like the Blink version. and Verdoux007 is right, Kids today... A great deal of songs today are remakes of old classic songs and people just don't know it.

  • @187ciFTW most of the songs back then where just remake of themselves it wasnt until later on that they actually started progressing from the same chord progressions and drum loops

  • @Verdoux007 Hahaha if it makes you feel better, at the beginning of the Blink-182 version, Tom jokingly says Jan & Dean demo, take 1.

  • @Verdoux007 blink didnt copy dude...y'ever heard of a cover? they included videos for their cover.

  • @Verdoux007

they didnt copy the clips tard, lol.

some random dude did, Blink were singing this song for a tv show and never made a music vid for it, lonely grown ups today *sigh*

  • LOL! Is that Peter Cetera in the yellow car?

  • Lesson #1: Don't be a stupid driver. Go back to driving school..

LETS KEEP OUR PUBLIC ROADWAY SAFE!!

  • we don't wanna hear your confessions

  • I was cruisin' in my Stingray late one night

When an XKE pulled up on the right

And rolled down the window of his shiny new Jag

And challenged me then and there to a drag

I said, "you're on, buddy, my mill's runnin' fine

  • Let's come off the line, now, at Sunset and Vine

But I'll go you one better if you've got the nerve

    Let's race all the way

    To Dead Man's Curve"

    Chorus:

Dead Man's Curve, it's no place to play

Dead Man's Curve, you must keep away

Dead Man's Curve, I can hear 'em say:

"Won't come back from Dead Man's Curve"

  • The street was deserted late Friday night

We were buggin' each other while we sat out the light

We both popped the clutch when the light turned green

You shoulda heard the whine from my screamin' machine

I flew past LaBrea, Schwab's, and Crescent Heights

And all the Jag could see were my six taillights

He passed me at Doheny then I started to swerve

But I pulled her out and there we were

    At Dead Man's Curve

  • Partial chorus:

Dead Man's Curve, it's no place to play

    Dead Man's Curve

    Dramatic interlude:

Well - the last thing I remember, Doc, I started to swerve

And then I saw the Jag slide into the curve

I know I'll never forget that horrible sight

I guess I found out for myself that everyone was right

"Won't come back from Dead Man's Curve"

  • is there a dead mans curve?

  • There's alot of dead mans curves, it's just a local name for a really sharp curve

  • LOL, yeah a late model Vette. Still a cool video and song though.

  • i like the blink-182 version better

  • Is the fellow in the yellow jaguar David Duke?

  • WOW !!!!

  • Hey no fair using new technology - that's clearly a later Vette and not a Stingray, mean-looking Jag there with the flared arches too
