i was thinking ground zero means the place in new york, but that term has been coopted in 9/11 terminology. now that i think about it, ground zero was really meant for hiroshima, nagasaki and any theoretical/potential a-bombs.
also, why didn't you just do a voice-over yourself rather than use Stephen Hawking-like speaking tools?
It should be noted that this simulates only the effects of the blast wave, not the effects of thermal and ionizing radiation. Thermal radiation would greatly extend the area of destruction created by thermonuclear warheads by incinerating things that would otherwise survive the blast itself.
Also think about this, hackers have been able to penetrate the Department of Defense and play pranks on them. But imagine some nutjob was able to hack into NORAD or SAC and he inadvertantly causes the outbreak of World War III! Just because the Cold War is over does not mean the possibility of a nuclear hellfire being unleashed somewhere has vanished. In fact, I think the number of threats has dramatically increased.
consequences of a coup de tat that brings in a radical government, or terrorists hijacking a nuclear weapons silo in Pakistan, then they launch warheads at their religious rivals in India, or at Israel, or even at Russia or China. Within hours or days, eventually an ally of the United States or the United States itself would be attacked, and the full bore of our nuclear arsenal is unleashed. Armageddon.
Neither Pakistan nor India is crazy enough to attack each other knowing fully well the consequences. Not even a fanatical islamist leader of Pakistan would ever do something so utterly stupid. Also how the hell will a group of terrorists (most of which are just a band of bandits wearing sandals and AK47's) going to overrun top secret sites guarded by government forces who by themselves can't fire weapons without being given clearence codes?
even a small "suitcase nuke" would have disasterous effects. That is why nuclear proliferation must cease, that is why we cannot allow a nuclear Iran or a nuclear North Korea, that is why all nuclear warheads must be dismantled! The detonation of one bomb anywhere would change the world forever, and possibly lead to a delayed, slow motion version of Global Thermonuclear War. Think about this, Pakistan, an Islamic country known to have problems with terrorism, is nuclear armed. Imagine the dire
Pakistan has the "terrorists" exactly where they want them. On one side they see through their fingers when it comes to them, but it is clear they know exactly how to get rid of them should they cause "national problems". These terrorists are all bark and no bite. They have very little influence even in Pakistan and no politician would ever dare backing them. Unless Pakistan goes through some "Islamic revolution" which failed in Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, the risk is minimal.
9/11 would look like a cakewalk. We would have thousands of people instantly vaporized and hundreds more burned and hundreds of others bathed in radiation. And mass decontamination units? HA! They're a joke! "Just wash off, you'll be ok." After one of those goes off, you better not eat or drink, because if you ingest a microscopic alpha particle, you're dead. You will die of internal bleeding due to radiation sickness. Years afterward, we would have thousands of cancer deaths. So as you can see,
Ever heard about "Nuclear Winter"? Very nasty scenario for even those who survived in the places not hit.
For the effects on society watch the BBC Drama documentary "Threads" from 1984. It can be found here on youtube. It deals with the longterm effects with the lack of resources and manpower for those few trying to rebuild a shattered Britain. Basically without electricity and water people are back in the Middle Ages.
Warning. "Threads" is extremely dark and bleak. Brutal.
This is why the proliferation of nuclear arms must immediately be ceased and all nuclear armed countries dismantle their nuclear arms programmes. It is INSANE that the human race makes weapons capable of destroying the planet! I am all for defending my country, but not if it means killing billions of people! By the way, that smallest device, the Davy Crokett nuke, something like that could be assembled by a terrorist in his basement with the proper tools and if it went off in say, Times Square,
holy shit, the second one makes fallout 3 sound pretty acurate, assuming that a bomb went off near or on the white house as apposed to the washington monument
Great video. It gives me an idea how far from ground zero im to be when a nuclear bomb goes off. However, im based in the UK so im fucked either way!!
Actually,cory18011801, if a nuclear bomb explodes on the suface all of the dust sucked up by the explosion is irratiated and blown over long distinces.
now the u.s. and russia are going to go down to 1500 nuke weapons on each side. that does not account for other countries that have nuclear weapons. if we end up in an all out nuclear war, with our enemies, i hope and pray it gets over quick, becuase the devestation brought on by one tsar bomba would be bad enough, times that by a 1000 or more??? the end of human existence as we know it, IF it does come down to that. I HOPE NOT!!!
Thank you for posting. I cried. I will show this vid to my grandson and tell him,"I am so sorry that we left this world to you. I only hope you can save it because we have destroyed it".
@cory18011801 YOU'D better be worried, it probably wont be the russians or the chinese, it would probably be someone like IRAN, OR PAKISTAN. be very VERY worried my friend.
@justilhetop Mmm? Think fire cracker to atomic bomb!! Put it this way. A hydrogen bomb requires an atomic bomb just to start it. Where as a nuclear weapon has an upper limit to its yield. A hydrogen bomb "theoretically" has no upper limit. A 200 megaton weapon is possible. To put that in visual perspective. Think of about 4000 air craft carriers packed with TNT. Now light the fuse.. and run. Tsar bomb would produce 3rd degree burns at 100 miles.
lol if u think about it... if u like what u have today, then u'll say i love nuclear technology... since nearing the late cold wars we developed further into the nuclear tech to get what we got today :D
though i think it would be much longer if we skip the nuclear age and try to get where we r now.
Wow, imagine driving towards the city when all of a sudden you see the blast so bright that even though your eyes are closed, its like looking directly into the sun. Then all you see is the mushroom cloud and the shock wave heading right towards you...scary
@theemann12 You should do some research on the place where Russia did all of their nuke tests from 1949-1989 then tell me why we should ever drop another one. Ignorance is the greatest evil.
@UnitedKorean I am so sorry that media exists, without it there would be far less ignorance in the world. Why are you so angry at the U.S? Is there anything you have learned on your own, or are you just repeating what you've heard. To wish an entire nation would be nuked make one appear quite mad.

@evilferret132 Not sure about a sun tan, but for first degree burns on any exposed areas of the skin you would need to be within about 80 miles of the blast radius, not counting curvature of the Earth or obstacles. Rough estimate.
@kiwininja100 The Tsar is a hydrogen bomb it just a multi stage device that originally was about 100 MT but they cut back to about 55 because of fall out
why dont you guys start nuking moscow for christ sake you guys make it look like america is a motherfucking racist shity fucking 3rd world country slum town capital
New York is the obvious choice for this video. DC is an abnormal town in may ways. Moreover, all the landmarks that people know are too close to ground zero. No one knows where most of these outer places are--including me, and I have a lot of geography in my noodle and have put some significant time in on the ground in DC.
Also, the pace of the video is too slow. The depictions of the PSI lines are good. The concept is great--such a video is needed and you have many strong elements here.
@loveliberty1776 the people who made the atomic bomb were young adults who had no idea what they were doing and begged for the bomb not to be used in warfare once they saw the result of its use.
I rather think that people who command to use such weapons 'are insane and evil',
but not these ones who built that.
Such bomb is just effect of nuclear physics - someone had to have the nukes first :-) .
For example, Nazists were really close to so called 'dirty' nuclear bomb. But even if not Nazists (because they had not got the bomb) - next could be maybe Soviets.
w8, you could nuke the washington monument and not damage the white house? I think your forgeting the three area vaporization, veryveryveryveryveryveryvery hotness, and hotness zones.
no no no no no...no. I don't care if its Ktons or Mtons a NUKE in that vicinity would annihilate the white house, be it by vapourization or sheer heat which, incase you haven't watched how to survive a nuclear blast, is VERY, hot.
of course it would just wreck the building and not...other places nearby...(IE down ;) )
whatever mr know everything. I do know what im talking about and if you honestly think i'm wrong you need to go look again at your math. nuke near white house = no white house. simple as.
Sorry "wdeaver7", but only if you were in a well sheltered area, severe damage to all houses and moderate damage to all concreate structures in that area.
@xPunisher12x what most people don't realize is that these calculations do not take into account energy loss of the bomb/blast due to terrain and destruction of structures. I don't care how big the bomb is you can't get away from conservation of energy. The more stuff it destroys the weaker it gets. These calculations come from detonations in the middle of a flat desert. Take from that what you will.
can't wait for FALLOUT RL.

People that built those weapons are insane and evil.

well without Einstein we would of never figured it out so u can thank him

@loveliberty1776 leave it to the ussr to build a weapon that could destroy the east coast of the US with only a handful of bombs
X6xWARHAWKx9X 1 year ago
@loveliberty1776 America did it too, not just Russia,,,

@loveliberty1776 the people who made the atomic bomb were young adults who had no idea what they were doing and begged for the bomb not to be used in warfare once they saw the result of its use.
tacoofdeath13337 1 year ago
@loveliberty1776 i really agree

@loveliberty1776
I greet you.

w8, you could nuke the washington monument and not damage the white house? I think your forgeting the three area vaporization, veryveryveryveryveryveryvery hotness, and hotness zones.
KKinsane2009 1 year ago 2
i think you werent paying attention the only way the white house would not be completely gone is if it was a tac nuke there much smaller
Koptfoeva 1 year ago
@Koptfoeva
no no no no no...no. I don't care if its Ktons or Mtons a NUKE in that vicinity would annihilate the white house, be it by vapourization or sheer heat which, incase you haven't watched how to survive a nuclear blast, is VERY, hot.
of course it would just wreck the building and not...other places nearby...(IE down ;) )
KKinsane2009 1 year ago
@KKinsane2009, you have no idea what you're talking about, please, type no more.
MagicJigPipe 1 year ago
@MagicJigPipe
whatever mr know everything. I do know what im talking about and if you honestly think i'm wrong you need to go look again at your math. nuke near white house = no white house. simple as.

i live in the middle of rockville, MD, do u think i would survive if that last bomb were to be dropped?
wdeaver7 2 years ago
probably not because radiation from the fallout
punelipeekiller 2 years ago
Sorry "wdeaver7", but only if you were in a well sheltered area, severe damage to all houses and moderate damage to all concreate structures in that area.
xPunisher12x 2 years ago
@xPunisher12x what most people don't realize is that these calculations do not take into account energy loss of the bomb/blast due to terrain and destruction of structures. I don't care how big the bomb is you can't get away from conservation of energy. The more stuff it destroys the weaker it gets. These calculations come from detonations in the middle of a flat desert. Take from that what you will.
