social Distortion will always be better than the descendents, dont get me wrong i love the descendents, they're fuckin great, but i personally think social D is just an overall better band
They weren't officially straight edge, but collectively rejected drug use. I think Milo is still sober after all of these years. They make fun of drinking, smoking and drugs in numerous songs and live sets.
Straight Edge doesn't reject coffee, you're refering to Hardline. The band has never claimed Straight Edge but they have all, like Beardo said, rejected drug use and made fun of it.
I've been a songwriter and music lover for years dude. And other than that one little lead, this and "Far Behind" by Social Distortion, barely sound alike at all. Both great bands, but I gotta say Social D is better. Also, between these songs, Far behind is waaaaaaay better. Catchy, fast, energetic, even for "old burnouts" at like 55 years old.

I was,
and social distortion are a tired worn out broken record band that in they're drug fried brains has now unknowingly resorted to stealing riff's and, in my opinion, now associating a once cool riff with dumb fuck burn out pretend tough guy sell outs.
@phinmagic Actually Social Distortion wrote "Far Behind" in 2007... hahaha So it's way younger than 1996... But your point is accurate. But who really cares? I chalk it up as Mike Ness doing it subconciously... I'm sure he knows the Descenents very well, and wouldn't intentionally rip them off... But yes, it's still funny...
@Mozzer232 Why is this still being discussed. It still amazes me that kids are talking about this four years later. Given that the SxDx song is about "a certain person" explicitly, its pretty much on the record that lifting the riff is a deliberate parody.
How could anyone think something that glaringly obvious would be subconcious, or the MN would plagiarize a riff like that unless he meant to. Floors me that there has ever been a controversy about this.

someone said that the friend mentioned in far behind is bill stevenson (although i have no idea how accurate that is); if thats true then social d might have used the same riff on purpose, kinda as a way to make some people think of the descendents' song
damn people, no one ripped anyone off....theyre both from cali..im sure theres alot of songs that start like that.......no one got ripped off, shit both bands are fuckin great...stop bitchinnnnn
What song did Social D steal from descendents? Social D and descendents dont sound anything alike...sorry.........Mike ness stole from...COUNTRY AND FOLK MUSIC
Get the time, and far behind are both awesome songs..and probably social D stole the riff but the lyrics are so different is not the same..so when people say. Social D stole the song..they are wrong...cause they didn't first listen to far behind and see what I mean.
dude come on the songs dont sound alike at all!!!! exepct for the lead guitar part and that shit does sound almost exactly lol idk i think its a coincidence like every other song that ppl say is a ripoff. social d. and that kid who says mike ness is a bad song writter is an idiot.
i used to love social d but once i heard far behind i knew that they ripped of the descendents, dont get me wrong i still like social d but ive always liked the descendents way more.
I hold equal-ish respect for each SD and Descendents. Both found at different point in my life, SD was more adult and helped me thru my addictions, but Descendents were my FUN time! :)
NOW I HAVE THE TIME!!!!!!! I love you Milo and all! :)
Check out the irony...Cool guy/tatooed greaser rocker guys...wait a decade or so; then RIP OFF the "nerds". If you doubt? Play them back to back(start with the Descendents) and see what you think. It IS the same song.
woah hold on a second here, Social D is fucking awesome im a bigger Descendents/ALL fan myself but dont be hating on a great west coast punk rock band, they have great albums man
This sounds like Social D better yet, I should rightfully say that Social D sounds exactly like this, I understand in "punk Rock" a lot of bands use the same riff, but the similiarity between this & Social D I think is more than just a coincidence. Fuck that then, I guess he's Mike Ness is pawning off other people's music to get hits & make more money......another coincidence that both titles ryhme.....
yea from 0:20 to 0:30 its like SOCIAL D - FAR BEHIND... dunno if they meant to copy or it was just coincidence.. we play a song in my band that sounds like a part of CAROUSEL from BLINK 182 but we did it before even listening to that song.. so dunno
I remember first buying the All album in the 80's. They were/are the best at mixing hardcore punk/pop punk. Many tried to emulate but no other band can compare.
