  • This isn't available for instant play on Netflix, so I'm so happy to find it here! What a striking film- I can't wait to finish it. Also, I just realized where I know the lead from- he was in another lesser-known (and quite good) film called "Short Eyes", and was great in that, too.

  • Nice, thanks for posting this.

  • This is a great piece of Science Fiction Film making. Thankyou for sharing it online.

While it is posted as the original 1980 version. I think it is not. The soundtrack as orginally aired was different. It really lost a little feel of the time with the Beatles cover band in this release.

  • This film is a true classic.

  • I haven't seen this for 30 years! Thank you so much!!!!!!! ^^

  • I also saw this when it originally aired. About 10 years ago I paid $130.00 for the original California PBS station VHS tape because it was still being held up in the courts. 6 months later they finally won the court battle and released it on DVD. I don't care, I have the original complete with PBS commercials of the day. I didn't care too much for the remake of the movie though which came out later.

  • i had no idea this movie existed...

in my english language class, the topic of the week is dreams and the mind. and the main listening material was about this book... in the audio, a professor gives a lecture about dreams and tells the plot of this book... and i loved it!!!

i had no idea there was a movie about it... i've checked some info and there's even a 2002 remake, but the critic says it's crap. even Ursula K. Le Guin disapproved of it. so i'm sooo gonna watch this 1980 movie here

  • PBS released this version a few years ago as a premium for fund-raising. The DVD version has the most wonderful interview with Bill Moyers and Le Guin in which she explains how incredibly low the budget was for what was then PBS' movie division. The reason it was not released was that the various rights had never been obtained.

As someone who is lucky enough to count the author as a neighbor (in my county) this movie - like the book - is magic, particularly to those of us who live in Oregon

  • DAMN...I saw this when it first aired 30 years ago. I haven't seen it since today. I've never forgotten how brilliant the story was. I also remember how the alien refered to him as JorJor...lol.... Thanx for posting this movie!

  • Many Thanks for posting!!! I saw this first came out and loved it , didn't like the remake as much. I was always watching PBS the British BBC stuff, This was soo wonderful I didn't miss the corsets at all LOL

  • Yep, I was in college when I saw this and fell in love with it. 30 years later I understand it's brilliance (lost in today's world),iit's 'Man cannot play God'. Thank you so much for posting it. I have this on a beta tape someplace.

  • OMGPONIES! This was one of my all time favourite films and I thought I would never get to see it again (I actually had taped in on audio tape back in the day) but now ... OMGOMGOMG!

Thank you for getting WNET to release this. I will set aside time this weekend to watch it thru and enjoy it, tho' I will miss the 'Little Help From My Friends' at the end as, considering I've only had audio for so long, the change will be noticeable.

    Thanks again!!!

  • I just finished watching this. I haven't seen it since it was first broadcast on PBS.

It might have been low budget but the production values are great. The acting was spot on and the story (though at times confusing) was well paced and had the power to really draw you in.

I heard they made a remake. I doubt if it's as good as this movie.

    Thanks for posting it.

  • I actually have this on DVD. A friend of mine had it and I copied it. So glad that it's here though for other to see. We need more interesting sci fi stories like this, (maybe with a little less cheese thought...lol)

  • I once had sex with this incredibly hot girl, I called the experience "the lay of heaven" . True story.

  • greatest sci-fi bitch !!

  • @segitary go back to your cubicle... but a good film.

  • Thank you SO much for posting this! I haven't seen it in ages and I don't know why it's not shown more often. It certainly is VERY faithful to the story line...Unlike that piece of CRAP remake that was done a few years ago.

  • Tell us how you really feel about the remake....But seriously, you're VERY welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  • I was looking for this movie earlier! Thank you for posting it. I was born a year after it was released, but I have seen both versions and enjoy them both. Thanks!

  • I wrote to WNET and said if you cant fix the issues and drop this movie to tape, sell the rights to me and I WILL DO IT. Not sure what they thought of that, but only a few months later, they did dubbed over The Beatles rendition of "With a Help From My Friends" and replaced it with a different version, thereby circumventing the hold-up... and released this film once again. I'd like to think that the few of us and ME were responsible for getting this back into history!! (No joke here.)

  • Nice one - it's a great movie! :)

  • A long time ago, when the Internet was young, this movie had problems in being released anywhere since it's first broadcast on PBS. (I seen it too, and "tape recorded" - no vcr's back then) it. A few people patitioned WNET13, NY (not sure if call letters were same back then), to try to get this dropped to vid tape. Websites were dedicated to get it's return. But there was copyright issues. The Beatles song (performed BY The Beatles) was the hold up. (I'm out of 500 char limit, see my next post.)

  • Why thank you ! I think the actor playing Dr Haber also did a remarkable job.I love how shallow and opportunistic he became once he realized Orrs potential and suggests "The Dr Haber Oneirological Institute"(Which looks a lot like the Prudential town center in Michigan) also , when George returns to Dr Haber after the aliens leave the moon and Haber says "Oh , George ... something new ." Then he presses a button on his new console instantly rendering George unconcious.Priceless !

  • Hey, thanks so much for this! I haven't seen it in ages.

  • You're very welcome!!

  • I was just short of my 13th birthday when this was first broadcast. Brilliant.

  • I was about the same age myself and remember being absolutely transfixed. When I came across a copy about a month ago I was delighted and knew that I had to put it out there for others to experience and enjoy.

  • @bahstarde

Transfixxed-that's the word, so well said, a most intriguing and life changing movie

  • No comments yet? I'm shocked ! This is without a doubt my favorite sci -fi film of all time (definetly up there with"Day The Earth Stood Still" )and better than it's remake with James Caan as Dr Haber.Ursula K. is an amazing author. I love how George's subconcious is so unpredictable.Fantastic film!

  • You get to be the first, obviously a viewer of taste and distinction. It's amazing how a remake done seven years ago packs nowhere near the emotional punch of the original. The best science/speculative fiction is about ideas first and foremost. Consider that this film was made for only $250,000 in 1979. That would be $744,000 today, still a ridiculously small budget. Big money and fancy effects with nothing at the heart are just a waste. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

    Best regards.
