This qChat stuff is garbage. I tried it about 2 months ago. It is NOT as fast as Nextel, and it requires EVDO signal in order to work. So I found I had no P2T coverage with sprint qChat devices (because of lack of signal) in areas where Nextel devices had 5 bars. Dumped it and went to Nextel
Nextel/Sprint offering PTT over CDMA2000 or iDEN. I'm familiar with iDEN back in 2002 and my customers couldn't get enough of it. I sold more PTT phones than anything else (West Side Columbus, Ohio). I was very disappointed when Sprint decided to no longer maintain the aging iDEN network infrastructure. If Verizon takes the lead on this one using the BREW, I doubt it will be very popular. Everyone and especially those in public services such as police, fire, rescue, etc. would be well served.
Verizon is a joke. Overpriced , overrated, cocky ass employees, phones suck ass, and their pathetic attempt at "push to talk" is a JOKE. Sorry Verizon, keep pushing your phones to the elderly who purchase purely off of name recognition. SPRINT / NEXTEL is the best for direct connect, price, and Data. HANDS DOWN !
I have Google Voice and dont NEED cell phones. but I got one from the government for free anyway. Google Voice runs off wifi. Wherever I have wifi, I have a phone.
Yah, but there is wifi on busses here and the entire downtown area and most to the major towns all have wifi. So much wifi I dont NEED a stupid cell phone. Have fun paying for shit! Who's fucked now?
I am considering getting a Nextel Direct Connect phone. How good is direct connect? I am currently a sprint customer btw. Thanks to whoever wants to answer.
i used to like the Motorola phones but i got a samsung Z400 with DC through them and the direct connect is terrible i definitely wouldn't recommend it
Im glad that Sprint has these phones, been a long time Nextel user, and iDen is getting dated, Im going to get these QChat phones for my family and and a friend. long live the Nextel name. its the fastest in the industry....Verizon? ATT?, you might as well drop your PTT now, you'll never keep up with Sprint, as yours is Push to Wait
si fue la rapidez de IDEN lo que motivó a que Sprint compre Nextel años atrás entonces se estarán rompiendo la cabeza por no haber esperado el Qchat que es igual o mejor que Iden que desperdicio de dinero.
Had nextel for 6 yrs, Love the Direct connect, I am a FF/EMT I also do construction. so it worked very well. The problem was with coverage. Sprint is better, but not right were I live. For some of us we use the Driect connect just about as much as the phone.
so you think, they just came out with some more iden handsets. and when something is interoperable, that means they force it to work on something that is very incompatable with. hence forth iden is the rean nextel not q chat
yeah the only thing that sucks about qchat is that you can't do international direct conect that options is good for $10 a month. Nothing is better than having sprint signal plus data and being able to ptt
How can Verizon even sell a phone that takes like 10 seconds to connect? people are used to instant connects over iden and here VZ brings the BREW to the table? Push to wait. what a joke.

I just got two Verizon Moto V750's and all I can say is Sprint better go ahead and give it up. They are losing 7 lines from me to VZW. QCHAT should jokingly be called push-to-fail without the joking part.
No, Qualcomm's QChat (which is what Direct Connect on Sprint was called before being released) runs on the CDMA network, but it can communicate with phones on the iDEN network and vice versa.
Sprint also sells PowerSource phones. These phones were out before the new DCS phones were released. On these models (the ic402, ic502, ic602, and ic902), the cellular runs on the CDMA network and the Direct Connect runs off the iDEN network.
Prior to the merger, Sprint used to have a sucky version of Direct Connect. (So did other providers like Verizon). It was called ReadyLink. Nextel people used to jokingly call it "Push to Wait" (since Nextel branded their DC feature "Push to Talk") because it was so damn slow. A lot of these wannabe DC services other providers put out essentially ran through the voicemail or IP component of the cellular network. It's a very crappy experience. You need a dedicated network to do DC right.
Sprint currently sells two other Direct Connect on Sprint phones: the LG LX400 and Samsung Z400. I'm sure a QChat-capable BlackBerry is in the pipeline.
They dont have any iden they use the wireless broadband coverage, basically sprints wireless network that you can access with those cards for your laptop that let you online.
the problem with nextel is that the phones were cool in like 1999. . .they havent changed, its just whack, push to talk is probably the most over rated thing. . .ever seriously everyone knows that one guy who thinks he/she is cool because he sounds like a construction worker when the little bleep goes off. . . so obnoxious, and the phones are just, gross.
Actually Sprint does plan to get RID of the Nextel brand name by 2010 which is a year and half from now. They plan to go all Sprint. George Laredo, Texas
Correct, and the IDEN network will be spun off, probably to the Feds.
Nopes Completely Gone.. EVDO network is more reliable. can handle allot more calls/data per site than iden.. iden is Way over.. my buddy is a Fed DOD-HS and he is getting a v950 from IDEN infact his whole team is..

to use Qchat you will need sprint 3g ev-do coverage in the area. So a lot area that is covered just by old nextel or boost iden can't use Qchat.
No 3G EV-DO = No Qchat
I ended up returning the new LX400 and reactiviated my old ic902

there doing it slow so you dont flip out.
LOOK IT UP>> IDEN IS OVER>>
QCHAT IS TAKING ITS PLACE.. duh>>

meaning sprint is looking to get rid of it. or hand it over to govt, mor than likely they will sell it. look on phonescoop
sgcsc 3 years ago
why dont they just call, text, im, or buy regular walkie talkies and not pay soo much for that crappy service
yomama5567 3 years ago
Because you cannot communicate over more than a few miles with a standard off-network walkie-talkie, unfortunately.
