I support and go to all the Ole Miss games and when they play the song everyone likes it and goes along with it. And if it affends you, you shouldn't be there because Ole Miss follows Southern Tradition. They even used to fly Confederate flags. The South needs economic recovery, among other things. Chanting 'TSWRA' alludes to the idea that one day the South will again be an economically dominant region. If that makes you feel threatened, or is something you do not want to see happen, then who is discriminating?

As a former member of the Ole Miss marching band (class of 1960), I was surprised to find so many recent performances of Dixie. Making it into a medley with the Battle Hymn of the Republic hardly makes it less offensive to enlightened white southerners nor to the huge number of black students studying at Ole Miss these days. I am amazed that the student body tolerates this Old South crap, especially now that the U,S. has a black president.
The reason that Ole Miss still plays Dixie and got rid of the Battle Hymn of the Republic is because big alumni donors like my mom who was also in the band stopped given as large of donations. Another reason is that almost of the student body is from the south and are proud of there heratiage. If you hate Dixie so much why did you go to a school in the south?

At a University level, it's expected that you have at LEAST 4 years of halftime marching experience. I KNOW that the guy who moved at 2:42 after the band halted didn't go to a MISSISSIPPI high school band.
the ole miss band is amazing. the quality of the video is not good. people who think they could do a better job than the band director at ole miss obviously do not know what they are talking about. the band director at ole miss is international president of phi beta mu and is nationally recognized know throughout the country.

We have a horrible band director here at Ole Miss in my opinion. Especially halftime shows. I have to other places and they have good halftime shows. We have been playing the same crap for the past several years. And it is always some Michael Jackson BS. We need a better director who knows how to make our band look good.
You might try the job yourself sometime. It isn't as easy as it seems. I'm sure someone could do your job a little better, too. Give the man some props...he has a tough job.

And you, this is early in the season. Since they are wearing shorts and t-shirts it is probably the first or second game I would say. They have probably only been working on this show for a couple of weeks. Some of the people in this band might not have been in a wonderful high school band or even a band that marched and are learning everything in two weeks. Give them a break. By the way, he doesn't make as much as you think. Take the job if you want but I doubt you are qualified.

As for racial oppression, it existed everywhere in America both north and south. My God, the North was extremely racist during the slave days. This is one of those things that only draws flak because it is going on in the South. If this were to happen anywhere else it would be a dead topic not worth discussing. Nobody wants to see the return of slavery, that is not even the topic at hand. Of the people who chant "TSWRA" maybe 1 in 200 actually want to see something like that occur, and there will always be those people in any group. The South needs economic recovery, among other things. Chanting 'TSWRA' alludes to the idea that one day the South will again be an economically dominant region. Making it into a medley with the Battle Hymn of the Republic hardly makes it less offensive to enlightened white southerners nor to the huge number of black students studying at Ole Miss these days. I am amazed that the student body tolerates this Old South crap, especially now that the U,S. has a black president.

In 1776 the Colonists stood up against the most tyrannical government on earth: Great Britain. The very nearly lost their bid for Independence. Had they lost, generations of schoolchildren would have been taught how the rebels were "traitors" and deserved to be hung.
In 1861 their grandsons confronted an even greater tyranny: the US government under Lincoln. Sadly, they lost their bid for Independence.
But the memories linger, the spirit lives, and the soul waits for the day to come!

The South had no reason to stand up against the North, they did it all on a preemptive basis. Lincoln never said anything about ending slavery or taking away states rights which is why the South seceeded. The Republicans only wanted to limit the spreading of slavery, not ending it, the South was just upset about the election on 1860 because they lost which was their own fault, had Southern Dems been able to decide upon one single candidate, Lincoln may not won at all. Get your facts straight.

We have a horrible band director here at Ole Miss in my opinion. Especially halftime shows. I have to other places and they have good halftime shows. We have been playing the same crap for the past several years. And it is always some Michael Jackson BS. We need a better director who knows how to make our band look good.

You might try the job yourself sometime. It isn't as easy as it seems. I'm sure someone could do your job a little better, too. Give the man some props...he has a tough job.

And you, this is early in the season. Since they are wearing shorts and t-shirts it is probably the first or second game I would say. They have probably only been working on this show for a couple of weeks. Some of the people in this band might not have been in a wonderful high school band or even a band that marched and are learning everything in two weeks. Give them a break. By the way, he doesn't make as much as you think. Take the job if you want but I doubt you are qualified.

I love the Confederacy and Dixie. It is too bad though that the Ole Miss Band has not played this beloved song with a good tone ever! This could be played beautifully. Marching band and pep band does not mean that it has to sound bad. Can someone at that university please teach the band how to play well?
