I remember watching this programme and all they did was try to make Bernard out to be an horrible man. Telling racist jokes doesn't make you a racist. It's sad to see great comedians like Bernard pass away, because nobody tells jokes like them anymore. There's a few ok comedians around now, like Peter Kay but the don't tell jokes like the old days.
If the PC brigade get their way, then one day comedy will be dead and we'll all sit around feeling miserable for ourselves.

They understood it was an act, and took his jokes about black people -as they were being told in the same context and with the exact same venom as the jokes he told about the Scots, the Irish and the Welsh- with the same good humour the rest of his audience did. Bernard's humour was probably developed during his time in the army. That is to say, it is a kind of banter between friends, and has very little to do with any actual real racism.

I think a lot of you do not realize how the English were and are; English people are always proud and ready to fight to protect their country English people would fight even if they were down to rolling pins sticks and stones, its bred and part of an Englishman's genetically makeup to take no crap from anyone.

You're absolutely right. I saw Bernard Manning's act several times. There was no way on this Earth that his act could be described as racist - it barely referenced non-white people at all. The YouTube clips are entirely misleading.
Where you are wrong though, is with his audience. The times I saw Bernard it was just regular people. His audience were terrified of him, by the way. They would sit motionless like statues, fearing that any kind of movement would attract his attention ...
