June Anderson, a great artist of the opera stage, and a wonderful singer who shows us how it's done. What an ageless, golden, powerful voice! Bravissimo!
You ignorant slack assed ,brainless maggot!!! Take your wannabe mafia bullshit and stick it in your worthless ear!! Maybe she is not the best -if that is what you are commenting upon but......!!!! Wow! This is just how Konstanza ought to sound! She is a remarkable Konstanza! June Anderson was a true Mozartian soprano...I love it...but for Martern Aller Arten I also love Edda Moser who does a terrific performance, as well as Maria Callas and also Valerie Masterson
Almost agreed with you but Masterson is not a soprano of similar league as the ones you quote. Though I like her, naming her in one breath with Edda Moser, Callas, June Anderson is not quite right
True but I just happen to love that Valerie Masterson who was a Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta soprano also sang opera roles. She also sang Gilda in Rigoletto. True, she's not at the level of Edda Moser, Callas and many other true sopranos of opera but I like her for trying! And she didnt produce ugly sounds at all
That was amazing! In my opinion, there's nothing quite as emotionally potent as a soprano belting out an aria with every fiber of her soul. Thank you, June Anderson, for being such a wonderful singer!!
rayterrell, i'm interested where this lyric-spinto coloratura fach is classified. to my knowledge there are only two classified coloratura fachs, lyrischer koloratursopran and dramatischer koloratursopran. the dramatic coloratura soprano is probably closest to the vocal quality you're describing as those voices are much richer in quality than a lyric coloratura.
I would hardly consider Damrau a dramatic coloratura. Her voice is way too lyric. And, she doesn't have nearly the kind of accuracy displayed here. Sutherland, Moser, Deutekom, and Anderson would be much better examples of a true dramatic coloratura.
no- it's true that someone's voice can be caegorized as being lyric-spinto coloratura soprano...everyone's voice is not going to be in the same category
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
She was spectacular at one point, but this is approaching the point in her career where she began to experience her vocal decline, around the mid 90s ish. i like june anderson, but in her work after about that time i think the EXTREMELY wide slow vibrato can really take away from the music, you can hear some of that here.
To "plantlover9"-I've seen Diana's version of "Holle" before. And while Diana's F6's are remarkable, and her entire mid range is super clear, her phrasing/timing isn't smooth at all. You can even hear her gasp in between passages! Mee-ouch!
Why didn't the conductor pull her aside about this?
So far, June Anderson seems to be THE owner of Mozart's soprano work. Or maybe... June is a lyric-spinto coloratura, and I am just a sucker for that vocal fach? Who knows?
I generally think of opera singing as being little TOO MUCH of a good thing. Like hearing a bunch of pretentious, gargle-yawning voices go overinflated in attempts to sound fuller, higher, and more dramatic than they really are.
However, ever since I heard June in Amadeus, I've been in love with this woman's voice. Her sweetness, volume, smooth vibrato,insane-range, and easy-control transcends operatic snob circles. She just sounds awesome to the average ear! I love it! Thanks for the post!
i had a similar opinion, untill i heard diana damrau in die zauberflöte (role of the queen of the night) there are two videos of her sole performance, "die hölle Rache" and "oh zittre nicht"
also check out her version of this aria, it is even more pure than andersons version.
Joan hit the notes above the C without scooping, mainly it was in the upper middle where she would scoop. Gruberova scooped many of her E and Ebs, which detracted from the over-all performance. June scoops quite a bit as well.
Brava!!!
The first time I heard Ms. Anderson sing was in the broadcast of the 1991 Anniversary of the Met. When she began singing, I was totally floored. Her effortless control totally amazed me. I had no idea I had been hearing her in Amadeus (one of my all-time favorite movies). Thanks for posting this.

I saw June Anderson's debut in New York, and
loved her ever since - one of the great ones!
She is nothing like Dame Joan because she
lacks Joan's warm humanity, and therefore
uses different arts than Joan to deliver
a magnificent performance. Also, the
natural voice types of June and Joan are nothing alike.
Love them both!

June does a fine job here, considering the complexities of this aria. Her timbre seems compatible with the character of the role, even if her occasional scooping attack detracts. Sutherland's recorded version on London is stunning, and my favorite version. Dame Joan never did perform this role on stage. She withdrew from a scheduled performance at the Met in her mid-fifties, apparently concerned that the high tessitura might cause strain.
