Homophobia is a non-concept invented by the Party (Orwell: 1984) to further undermine ordinary decent society and consolidate the power of the liberal marxoid so-called elite.
The meaning of "homo" is "same" and "phobia" is "fear" so it means fear of the same, which is meaningless, and just shows whoever invented it was brain-dead.
If only I was that strong....I still haven't come out to my dad. Every one else....but not him. The idea terrifies me. I want to but can't seem to find the words
I believe that sport will always be a battle of masculinity. It is by nature a battle of the strongest and fittest (traits that have always been associated with males). It has never been just about 'having fun' as sports were originally used to train males for warfare. If we want to kick homophobia out of sport then, I believe we need to tackle the wider issue of people associating homosexuality with femininity and weakness.
Speaking as a straight married man and dad, may Gus and everyone else struggling in the midst of bigotry find friends, family, and love that accepts you as the person you are.
For you are persons fully deserving of a happy and fulfilling life among welcoming community as anyone else.
I sat here & watched the video, & my eyes were swimming in tears. What a powerful & wonderful gesture of yours, to share this. You have done what I want to do, but have not yet got up the courage to do. This is so difficult for me, as I am generally not the most 'sharing' person anyway but at the same time, I feel a pressure building in me to tell someone. With an example like this video, maybe I will go for it, and tell. Thanks so much Gus. You don't know how much good this has done.
Great bravery. The stupidity of the current situation was not clear to me before. I am not gay but maybe I was a closet homophobe by neglect. I hope not. Well done.
@71Daze, the only medal he wants is exactly the same one that a straight sportsman gets when he talks about his girlfriend or the hot chick he met last night.
Gus, thankyou, thankyou. You're a great inspiration to all of us who might have ever struggled with our sexuality, within a sporting context or beyond. This video shows you to be a brave, honest, humble and wise person. All power to your and your message.
Speaking as a straight bloke, it must have been a hard thing to do. Perhaps slightly easier having left the sport. But when it comes down to it, what does it matter? Who gives a rats arse about the sexual orientation of a great sports person? You follow them (or not) because of their sporting abilities. Good on you Gus. But the sad thing is that it matters to people. You don't hear sportspeople having to admit "oh by the way, i'm a microsoft engineer". What is the relevance? Respect them.
From a straight guy who loves sport and played rugby for years (and in retrospect never had an openly gay teammate) - good on you, you're a brave man! You've set a great example for others grappling with unjustifiable prejudice towards their sexuality.
Well done! I faced a similar situation (from professional pressures). Life became easier when I stopped hiding, confidently became myself and stopped worrying about the "ifs" or "maybes" of how people might see me (this is something you can not control). There are so many factors in life why some will like and others will not like you, sexuality is just another. Facing these fears wiill give you the opportunity to focus on your important strengths and abilities. You'll not look back, I'm sure.
Straight or gay, we all have the right to seek and fight for happiness! Love yourself and always be thankful to the miracle and the great opportunity that life is and brings. Just remember the ones who love you and not the people trying to bring you down!
Gus, as we all are mere mortals of human beings, a great proportion of us are in need of forgiveness for our ignorance, lack of education and for the fact that great numbers of us are self-induced hypocrites.
Toss away the shame, walk tall and grab life with all that it
encompasses, which is your Birthright, the good and the not so good.
Imagine yourself having your own child who finds himself/herself gay,
love yourself the way YOU would nurture, love and protect your child.
Thank you for highlighting the culture of homophobia in Aussie sport.. I hope that this video can ignite a discussion about the residual anti gay sentiment especially thick in sectors of our community.
Where are all the other gay sports men? Where are the gay tradesmen?
Sexual orientation is just one fraction of a persons identity. We should remember that.
it is really alarming that being a gay sportsperson should even be an issue..but apparantly it is and good for you in being honest..i wish you well :)
Kudos to you, Mr. Johnston. Welcome to the rest of your life... by that I mean no longer living behind that wall of lies, so to speak. Thank you for your strength and courage.
Oh, and never apologize for being ginger. Some of us like the red. Good on ya, as they say.
@gusjohnston1 Friday afternoon I told my best friend I was gay after we finished a game of soccer. He told me it was disgusting that a fag was pretending to be a man by playing sports. It killed me.
I found this video a day after I had planned out how I would take my life. It's almost funny- as you spoke, I saw bits of myself in you. If you survived through this nightmare, maybe I will too. I don't even care if you're right, just the hope you might be is enough. Thank you Mr. Johnston.
@MunfyKun Be strong in the knowledge that thousands, if not millions, of people across the globe would stand tall and proud with you my friend. You are not alone. You are not a lesser man. And there is hope. Because you have the strength and courage to continue forward. I know the 39,000 people who have watched my story would echo my sentiments and send you their support.
Its so true when you say, its the onslaught of the small throw away comments by people (often unmeaning and by those we love) that stack up and begin to erode our sense of self, stopping us from legitimising our place and sense of belonging in the world.
Life is hard to enough to rationalise without having to defend your existence and right to love and be loved. Its hard to climb out of that and its so inspiring to see when someone does it so boldly and proudly. Really good job mate!!
Thanks Gus for a very inspiring video. One of my clients shared it with me. As a "The Coming Out Coach" I am always blessed when I discover stories like yours that I can share with clients to help them see that they are not alone. This time, the client became the teacher and i became the student. I look forward to sharing this video on my website and it will become a must watch video fro my clients.
Gus, we all owe you a huge thank. We're changing the world, making it better, and it's good to know that such a good and brave man as your are stands with us all.
If I could have looked in a mirror ten years ago and had the courage and strength to say the same things about myself....how many could have benefitted. Whether it's sports or religion or family or society, we face the same fears and pressures. If only I had your example to look toward, my journey wouldn't have been as difficult. God bless you for stepping forward to make it easier for those who will follow.
You're a hero in our society. We need more inspirational people like you to combat negative stereotypes, and covert oppression. Your comments and sentiments resonates with many non-hetero which constitutes a large part of our society. Thank you for your courage.
It's wonderful to see you being comfortable with yourself and compassionate about people who go through the same ordeal.
I feel gutted, hearing people were close to taking their own life, because of socially and religiously imposed constraints.
The throwing up metaphor for coming out is so meaningful, because you finally refute and vomit all the unfounded criticism, hatred, bigotry and disgrace, that's been forced down your throat.
The power of your message comes from its simple honesty. You are inspiration to everyone - gay or straight. What you have done required bravery and strength of spirit only very special people like you have. I'm sure God broke the mould after He made you.
In the US, we call the sport Field Hockey. Never knew why men here didn't play. It's associated only with females. Good ol' sexist USA. :/ But I love it!
Gus, I had never heard of you before today, but I just want to reiterate what others here are saying: you are brave and insightful and beautiful.
Leave all your regrets behind you. You do untold good with this video. Your time is now. To regret it wasn't yesterday is an unfair expectation of yourself.
I really appreciate your video...I am a hockey player as well, international for Spain, and very happy to hear from you. I am lucky, and have no problems at all in my team...people like you are necessary...kiss
Thank you so much for your comments and ongoing support. You're all amazing! Please don't hesitate to share the video with your friends and family, on facebook, twitter or where ever you think people might find it relevant.
The response has been, and continues to be, truly overwhelming.
@gusjohnston1 I just find your story so inspiring and i can relate a lot of my life to yours in many ways... it's funny, I also play goalie, (ice hockey but still lol), i just hope i can be brave enough to let the world know who i truly am as you did, this video just spoke to me in so many ways, i really appreciate you sharing your story with us and i wish you the best! :)
@gusjohnston1 Thanks Gus, you are very brave and articulate. The reality is so many gay people at some stage in their life go through immense stress and suicidal thoughts because of the homophobic culture we live in. Thanks.
This man is my idol as we speak...I fought with feelings of being attracted to the same sex for years until this year after my birthday....It wasnt easy but I just got tired of changing pronouns, making up stories of banging chicks every weekend or developing swagger(whatever that is) to depict a str8 man...I just simply accepted myself for what I am....a bisexual nigerian man living in the USA!
Thank you very much for inspirational vide man, it is highly appreciated!
I like watching videos like this, because it lets me see what other people are going through.
I am gay, but luckily I didn't have this issue with coming out. Everything fell into place perfectly for me when coming out, and it made my senior year of high school the best year of my life. I was around really great friends who loved me for me, and everyone I told was willing to defend me if others had an issue.
I am sorry that people have to go through this; it does get better.
Thank you for doing this. It took a lot of courage to do this and please know that I am sure it will help many people. Not only those who need to know that they are not alone, but those who need to learn that anyone can be gay. You've done a great thing with this, please don't listen to any of the negative junk that will come your way. Your amazing, and I just wish I could give you a big hug! Thanks again.
I second most of the comments here. I share a very similar journey and can appreciate what you are saying on a very personal level.
Only thing I would add is don't regret decisions you couldn't make at the time. Life is far to short for regrets and each journey is in our own way and our own time.
You are brave, caring, compassionate and your parents couldn't ask for a better son who has become a great man.
Thank you Sir for this video. This must have been very difficult to make and then to release it. I hope that you continue to find successes in your life's labors, as well let in the love and support that surrounds you. You are an inspiration as person with such strength in character to be so honest about who you are. Cheers
Gus, When I first read this I was going to criticise you for staying in the closet while you were active in the sport, thinking that its easier for you to come out after you left. having watched the video, I see I was wrong and want to see your video is very sincere and genuine and your honesty is moving and refreshing. I hope you can know be comfortable with who you are and now truly be you! PS: Fancy a beer :))))
In my opinion, you have become the best man that you could be. You are strong and honest, and you have dealt with your past in a truthful way.
Your coming out in such a public forum will not just make everyone aware that there are gay professional athletes, but, also, it will make the way easier for future gay sports figures. They will have an easier path due to you.
Congratulations on a heartfelt and powerful video!
i can imagine that it has been really difficult and full of pressure to hide your true self. but: you did it and it means a lot of courage to take this step. i wish you a time full of joy, love and pride!
Thank you so much Gus for sharing your story. It is encouraging to see issues of homophobia addressed by someone from inside of the sporting industry. These stories are so important.
You'll be part of the inspiration for all those who haven't yet found the strength or felt safe enough to come out. For those also that have, and are still struggling. Much love to you, mate.
Inspirational. Thank you SO much Gus! Be proud of the strength you have just shared with so many who have (& are) experiencing the same feelings & issues.
Thank you so much for sharing your story, having the courage and integrity to speak your truth, and for being such a strong role model for the GLBT/queer community. It is wonderful to hear how the truth has set you free. I was in tears, inspired, made to smile, and feel proud throughout your video. Thank you.
Really inspiring and moving. If you don't feel you did what you should have when you were playing, please know that you are doing more than most, and more than making up for lost opportunities. I'm so sorry for the way that you were made to feel for those first couple decades of your life. Others will find relief because of you.
Congratulations on your courage. It is so sad that the sports world cannot see that sexual preference does not mean predatory actions..so sick. Sport needs to see that great players can be gay nd happy...and certainly better players. Homophobia worries about the dressing room but maybe those guys lack confidence in their own sexuality
what a wonderful man. You should finally feel great relief and I wish you the greatest happiness in your life. Go forward and find that man you so deserve (if you haven't already found him). Anyone would be very lucky to be with you.
Good ON ya, Gus Johnston! Fantastic video...thanks for your courage and candor, guy.....there is a huge population of gay and lesbian athletes out here to welcome and embrace you...come out and play!
Thanks for this. You're a great guy and this video will hopefully help people who are struggling with the idea of coming out. Honesty is always the best policy.
I am so lucky to be living in a society that finally starts realizing sexuality is not what define us as individuals. I cannot even begin to explain how of a positive impact on our society the coming out of all these more or less famous men has. Thank you.
Great video :) Hope this encourages other sportsman or ANYONE to be true to themselves and be proud. I suppose I have been lucky, playing hockey to a fairly decent level, being openly gay and having great team mates.
Awesome Gus. Very well spoken, great videography and of course a powerful message. Especially for people like me who were probably more on the other side of the fence, finding entertainment in teasing others who were different. Enjoying getting a laugh by teasing people like "Angus the red-head kid". I'm stoked that you have found the power to be true to yourself and share your story to hopefully make a difference.
I quit playing Hockey in my early 20's for the same reason, I even changed teams once and played at a lower grade to avoid the homophobia to no avail. Then about 5 years later I was welcomed into the Melbourne Uni Hockey Club were there was no issues at all. I was just one of the team. Thank You Melbourne Uni Hockey Club, Tim and Jason Go Shoppers. "It Does Get Better."
Got to this video via the Ben Cohen site. Deeply moving, honest and heartfelt. You must feel like the weight of the world has been taken off your shoulders. This message will make a difference to someone out there. It's great to see professional athletes coming out in greater numbers (even retired ones). And great to have straight guys like Ben standing up against bullying. Love to you both.
thankyou - inspirational. I was 46 before I was brave enough to come out. Homophobia wrecks so many lives. I identified with so much of what you say, and how you feel. :)
Been through this myself. I know the pain and I know the freedom you can earn when you let the make believe chains of being gay fall from your shoulders.
Been through this myself. I know the pain and I know the freedom you can earn when you let the make believe chains of being gay fall from your shoulders.
What a difficult, but sincere and inspirational talk. Very happy for the youth today to hear this. Only wish I had access to this same inspiration story 30 years ago when I was going thru the same issue! Hope many others will be able to pull strength from this.
This video is great, so inspirational Gus, congratulations on taking this next step in your life and sharing this with the world. It will certainly help many others. Wish I had seen something like this when I was 15 to 25, it would of been of great help. It was good to hear the Bi word there too. Luv ya dude, thanks.
Brave, raw, very powerful and truly inspirational Gus.
"When you are 25 and you are afraid and you are lonely and you don't have anyone to talk to and you feel like there is no escape..." resonates so loudly, especially today on RUOK? day. So important that we all try to be there for each other, to give each other the opportunity to tell each other that we are not OK and to support each other without judgement. Thank-you.
Incredibly brave and beautiful video mate. I am truly inspired, and I have no doubt your experience and honesty will be comforting and reassuring to many in a similar position. Good on you Gus.
Excellent video Gus. Congratulations on the courage and honesty you have shared with us. I know there are a lot of people out there that will watch this and relate to it. It's very inspiring. :)
Words can't describe my feelings right now for Gus. I have watched him grow from a young 13year old to the amazing man he is today. as the mother of a gay person I commend him for his stand . Stand tall Gus & be counted . you are a hero to many but a true inspiration to all.
All the very best for your future. I hope that you are now able to find peace & love in your world.
Well done Gus, an inspiring effort. Portrays the exact message I've been trying to get across to my year 8 sex ed class who are having difficulty grasping the idea that sexuality is not a choice, as well as society's expectations and inequalities etc. Excited to show them your video today! Hopefully it will open their eyes a little hearing such a personal and first-hand experience Thanks! :)
Fantastic Gus. Huge effort to stand up and tell everyone who you are. Anyone that does that has my respect and is clearly a stronger person than those that find it easier to hide behind ridiculing others. Gay or not, your personal values are far more important! When can you come and help me coach junior goalkeepers?
Gus "Caro Uomo Bello e Dolce" (Handsome Sweet Man) ! I want to offer up my most sincere thanks for this great video of yours, that from such a "High Achieving" affirming, fully "Out", and well adjusted gay man will likely prove invaluable for queer (LGBTQ) youth to view! Bobby Griffiths' (Prayers for Bobby) old lover/boyfriend "Blaine" here is both grateful as well as proud to have such a fantastic "Aussie Expat" speak up and out with such "Authenticity"!

Incredible stuff...brave and inspiring. Love your work Gus, and hope to be a more considerate and understanding person after listening to this. Well done.

The power of your message comes from its simple honesty. You are inspiration to everyone - gay or straight. What you have done required bravery and strength of spirit only very special people like you have. I'm sure God broke the mould after He made you.

Leave all your regrets behind you. You do untold good with this video. Your time is now. To regret it wasn't yesterday is an unfair expectation of yourself.

Phenomenal job, Gus.

"When you are 25 and you are afraid and you are lonely and you don't have anyone to talk to and you feel like there is no escape..." resonates so loudly, especially today on RUOK? day. Fantastic Gus. Huge effort to stand up and tell everyone who you are. Anyone that does that has my respect and is clearly a stronger person than those that find it easier to hide behind ridiculing others. Gay or not, your personal values are far more important!
