I cannot tell you how this video made me smile. I was there mid 85 to 90. As they drove, I recognized the Supra as my friend Eric Guth's. This was 2 days before my birthday. As you drive by the legion, we were setting up a pig roast. The idiots walking on the road were new people to our shop, coming to the pig roast. My car was the black 1 in the first space as you drove by... Thank You... It made my day...
Thanx 4 good memories. I was there 72-75 as weather tech. Capt. Johnson was great commander. I'm very happy he made Lt. Col. I coached AB Ski Team and we placed 2nd after Wiesbaden in Garmisch. I was also on USAFE Ski Team. When I was E-3, I was awarded AF Comm. Medal while at Beale AFB prior to going to W. Germany. If you're good, the AF will reward you. So, if you're thinking about joining the military, definitely pick the AF. The AF experience will be more valuable if u decide to leave it.
I grew up at BAFB. I keep going back every year. The town is slowly becoming run down. Cafe Royale on this video is now a brothel. The VFW is a Thai Resturaunt. Eifel Park is still nice.
Wow! Crazy to know this is from 88, because it ALL LOOKS THE SAME NOW! lol! Only difference really is that now (in the Bitburg downtown area) they have round abouts and like only one red light. Thanks for posting!
Hey! It's Charly and (Capt) Marcis Del Orbe! We were at Spang from 2005 - 2008! I had both of my kids at the Bitburg Hospital before they shut down the ward in '07! We also watched them tear 'down' the Bitburg housing ! That building they were referring to as the Anerican Legion is a Thai restaurant now! Twice as much than eating in an Anerican Thai restaurant though ;). Auf Weidersen!!
damn im gonna miss that drive in my 540.. which i just sold.. hm, the backraods are just about the only thing i'm gonna miss about this place. peace bitches!
Thanks for some memories. I recall Bitburg like you showed it (left turn and all) and the drive to Spang. I was at Spang from 77-79 and Bit from 82-85. It's little things like this that helps older folks like me remember.
@DMWBarngirl yeah, my kids remember it fondly. it's a wondrous place to grow up in. i miss it myself...but mostly, that hoppy, bitter beer that calls it it's home. ha
I was assigned to the 2137th Comm Gp at Spang from 1984 to 1988. It was a wonderful experience. Went to Trier, Frankfurt am Main and Cologne quite often. Got to learn to speak German very well and cried when I left. Now I have a business that is the world's largest reseller of telecommunication services and it's available in Germany! GOTT SEI DANK! :)
I was at Spang from 88-91, loved every minute of it. Spent all my money on train tickets to Lux City, shtubbies and paying off the Polizei. Great days.
i got in bad accident in 1990.going from a club near spangdaheim to a club near bitburg.i was drunk it was a single car accident ,i was the only one hurt.my ear got cut off .i spent some time at landstul hospital, with a guy that got his nose cut off ,in a drunk driving accident .i went to alcohol rehab in landstul and found out that ive got drinking problem.got married and divorced there too.however i have good memories and wish i had a reason to go back and visit.its a beautiful place
I was at Spangdahlem in 1976. The drioving brings back memories of Commander's Call and Airman were required to explain their traffic ticket or accident transgressions to the squadron. One was particularly funny as the Airman was explaining he was ran off the road by a "Phantom White Mercedes" where upon he lost his ass on the curve! ...his words.
@Nebel20 lol. and you're right. b50 was, at one time, the highway with the most accidents per annum in all of germany. i don't know that that has changed. but yeah, inexperienced u.s. g.i.s were to blame, without a doubt...bastards. ha
@ultrakool Don't get me wrong, i don't believe that all americans in Germany are bad drivers. I think it's just difficult for them to drive on our small and often in not good condition streets when you had driven on six lane highways before. And the other problem is that many young airman driving cars with a lot of HP and thinking because they are now in Germany they can push the pedal to the metal... and this often ends in the trench.
@Nebel20 Sie können aber gut English sprechen. Wohnen Sie in Niederkail ? Meine Verwanden wöhnt auch da. Meine Frau kommt aus Deutschland, aber ich bin Amerikaner.
I was there, too. '78-'90. A lot of wrecks on that road. Unsafe passing and speeds too fast in the curves.

Thanks for the flash back. I was stationed at Spangdahlem in the early 80s.
I sometimes miss being there knocking back Bitburger beer and Asbach shots.

@willease Seriously? To me, Bitburger tastes like somebody pissed in the vat. I could only drink it if I were already drunk.

Just wondering that these americans didn't commit an accident on the B50 as they usually do :D

Thanks for the video. I was a Dodds teacher at Spang from '85 to '93. It was fun to remember how it was in the late 80's. I know it's different now.
