Hey Carman there is a little thing called the first ammendment that keeps church and state seperate. If we did make the USA a christian theocracy; which denomination gets to make the laws? Do the Evangelicals get to or is it the Methodists, Catholics, Lutherns, Mormons, or some other denomination? What about the non Christians that pay taxes? What about the Salem Witch Trial, Crusades, or the Spanish Inquisition? As history has shown us bad things happen when you mix religion and government.

Actually. Jefferson used phrase "separation betwen church and state" in January 1, 1802 private letter to Baptists in Danbury, CT, not in Constitution. First Amendment "Establishment Clause:" was never intended to censor expression of faith. It was solely response to the British tax and legal privileges of Anglican Church. In fact, First Amendment gave greatest freedom of religious expression, even within govt - as evidenced in many govt bulidings up to WW II.

Separation of church was more met for the church's protection then for the state. After King Henry the 8th separted from the Catholic because he could get a divorce he made his own church, and he was the head. State ruling relgion, thus if you didn't worship in the Church of England you were considered a traitor to the state and persecuted. That's why people came to America to, freely worship God without any government trying to act like they were.
