Nobody's ever going to do this scene as well as Robert Preston - an incredible talent. Supposedly, they made him read twice before casting him in the role on Broadway!
i am doing this as a play and were making a circle around the stage passing books around to the balcony then someone drops eight feet to the ground in someones hand and the balcony is i the libreary not the theater and then someone takes the book from that personn hands it to another and it goes over and over again
I love certain pieces of music from ALMOST ALL genres known to man. This song is one of them. I most especially love the "reckless abandon" that plays between 5:35-5:47.
I'm even saving this to one of my MP3 players so that I can listen to it on the bus both to and from work. Can you believe it?
@Abimonkey1 The college my sister goes to performed this musical, and omigod this scene was sooo hot. (It kind of helped that Harold Hill was incredibly sexy.)
I like to make the librarians laugh if they look too stiff were worried about be efficient too much. Librarians are cool cause they love books but they sometimes get to bookish and forget to live a little. So maybe we need to help them come out of their shell a little.
I volunteer in an elementary school library after my school gets out, and I always sing this to myself when I'm checking in books. The kids think I'm crazy. :)
BTW, did you know that Shirley Jones was pregnant during this movie? When they did the kissing scene, her unborn child suddenly kicked hard insider her stomach. Robert Preston backed away and said "What the hell was that?" Years later, her son Patrick wanted to meet the great Preston. He knocked on Preston's dressing room door, and when Preston greeted him he introduced himself and stated that he had always wanted to meet him. Preston responded by saying: "We've already met!"
Hahahaha! Well, you don't have to be in love with the girl to do a good job singing the song. Just think of your own girlfriend while you do it, and be thankful that you are talented enough to perform this piece. And who knows...maybe you and that girl will even fall in love as a result of this performance!!! Hahahahahaha! And thanks for posting.
Agreed. Robert Preston was so far above Matthew Brokerick in skill and sheer charisma that I wonder why Disney even did this movie. There is simply no comparison. I would have been embarrassed if I were Brokerick; he looks and sounds like an anemic little boy compared to Preston.
@spacart1 It was like Ferris Buehler doing Harold Hill. It was cringe-inducing, and so was Kristin Chenoweth. A total miscast botch all around. Robert Preston RULES as Harold Hill.
This is choreographed INCREDIBLY well. I loved this song not only for Harold's singing and the acting that goes on during the song, but for the choreo.
hard to believe shirley was pregnant enough for robert to feel the baby kick during "til there was you" she doesnt' look pregnat at all throughout the whole movie!
I saw both versions of this movie 5 days ago and this song and Lida Rose-Will I Ever Tell You have been in my head aever since? This is my favorite song of the whole movie! I hate musicals but I love this one! I don't think Broderick was that bad, I just think Preston was waaaaaay better! I saw the Disney one with description since I'm blind and I had to see this one with no description. It's a shame, I really want the 1962 version described to me! I just love love love this song and movie!

This library is quite better than the library I go to. Loud, obnoxious cell phone, gum chewing, earphones turned up loud so others can hear your garbage ghetto types and people who are not there to read or use computers wisely, but also as a place for people to leave their kids while the mother and father is out cavorting around.
Well said & well put! The manners of a lot of young people today are atrotrious. I love going to our local library...but once school lets out for the day, it fills up with a LOT of loud, rowdy & rude youngsters, of which very few are there to study, read or even go online quietly. @PrettyFli4aWhiteguy Are you saying your school did this play? and you are in it? or that u are in the movie? cuz the movie was made in 1962. and at the time ron howard. If your school did the play. How did it go? This is my favorite movie of all time. since i saw it at the age of 14 in orchestra. we watched it every year since then in the class xD. LOVE it!
