  • My favorite song from this movie!! My all-time favorite musical!!!

  • I love the use of the word "carrion" in this song!

  • Shirley Jones was pregnant while filming. In a scene at a bridge, while Preston was holding Jones in his arms, the unborn baby kicked Preston!

  • Nobody's ever going to do this scene as well as Robert Preston - an incredible talent. Supposedly, they made him read twice before casting him in the role on Broadway!

  • Great video! How did you record that so well without any glare or movement?

  • Possibly the greatest scene in movie history.

  • @LilLuvYall Well next to Step in Time from Mary Poppins.

  • @LGTryg just pointing out something funny, chill.

  • @LGTryg Madame Libraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa....rian.

  • Hands down THE BEST SCENE in the movie!

  • This was the most AWESOME musical at the Shakespearean Play Festival. I loved it! <3

  • i <3 this song

  • i always like when the role originator in the movie :)

  • @LGTryg my friend was talking about librarians and i started singing and she looked at me like i needed to be committed haha. shed never seen this!!

  • Madam Libr- SHHHH~

    -IAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN~<3

  • 2:50 Those kids do know that Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy. And the two "lovers" end up killing themselves.

  • Maaa...

  • @EowynTheMaster ...rion.

  • I love how they fit the word carrion into a love song lol

  • I wish libraries were this much fun. I would go to them more often.

  • He would have been more quite if he just dropped he marbles/marshmellows

  • So when you make a fool out of a girl, she ends up liking you? Can't say I've seen that work out in real life.

  • 5:37-- the library officially loses it. What a fantastic pullback shot.

Thank you, Onna White (choreographer) & Morton DaCosta (director).

  • @mca1218 And I love how the music climaxes right on that shot.

  • Really funny, clever lyrics. Fun movie. And Robert Preston's is sexy in that probably- homosexual-but-makes-exceptions way.

  • My favorite scene from the film. doug matley

  • am I the only person who finds this song deliciously creepy. Its so stalkerific

  • i am doing this as a play and were making a circle around the stage passing books around to the balcony then someone drops eight feet to the ground in someones hand and the balcony is i the libreary not the theater and then someone takes the book from that personn hands it to another and it goes over and over again

  • classic

  • I love certain pieces of music from ALMOST ALL genres known to man. This song is one of them. I most especially love the "reckless abandon" that plays between 5:35-5:47.

I'm even saving this to one of my MP3 players so that I can listen to it on the bus both to and from work. Can you believe it?

  • huh. well that was awesome.

  • Where some people find this "hot" (not sure why), I find it romantic!

  • This is so....hot.

  • @Abimonkey1 The college my sister goes to performed this musical, and omigod this scene was sooo hot. (It kind of helped that Harold Hill was incredibly sexy.)

  • @MrDroolyAndMe That wasn't at Indiana University was it? Because I saw this yesterday performed there! It was great!

  • @brainykid800 No. It was in Virginia about two years ago.

  • There were no marbles in his bag, it was marshmallows.

  • robert preston has the same exact voice as my piano teacher its so WIERD!!!!

  • 6:59 the original conga line

  • i don't get the marshmallow thing... anyone care to explain?

  • i want all those diffferent colored shoes to match the outfits perfectly!! where can i get some?

  • 2:44-3:19 .. i mean im a lesbian and i almost kissed robert preston on my laptop screen!!

  • my fav song from movie tied with shipoopi!!1

  • If the library caught on fire? How could that possibly happen...?

  • @qualifa arson , gas leak, kids

  • @chrismarriott4, Lol

  • This song has haunted me all my life, and will haunt me until my dying day. (My name is Marian by the way)

  • This actually reminds me of Steppin Time from Mary Poppins cause there all dancing with her.

  • @Blazersenior06 I never thought of that before but you are right.

  • I like to make the librarians laugh if they look too stiff were worried about be efficient too much. Librarians are cool cause they love books but they sometimes get to bookish and forget to live a little. So maybe we need to help them come out of their shell a little.

  • johnny guitar

  • @ZOMGitsDouchebag whoops, this isn't the search box!

  • Comment removed

  • 17 people were asked out by the Music Man and refused :)

  • I busted my watchyamacallit

  • I love on the last minute she realized she was going to kiss him. (:

  • MARIAN THE LIBRARIAN IS MY FAVORITE SONG :D

  • this guys in skool got this song stuck in my head and i keep on singing it and humming it and listening to it

  • What a good pick up song. LOL

  • I volunteer in an elementary school library after my school gets out, and I always sing this to myself when I'm checking in books. The kids think I'm crazy. :)

  • BTW, did you know that Shirley Jones was pregnant during this movie? When they did the kissing scene, her unborn child suddenly kicked hard insider her stomach. Robert Preston backed away and said "What the hell was that?" Years later, her son Patrick wanted to meet the great Preston. He knocked on Preston's dressing room door, and when Preston greeted him he introduced himself and stated that he had always wanted to meet him. Preston responded by saying: "We've already met!"

  • Hahahaha! Well, you don't have to be in love with the girl to do a good job singing the song. Just think of your own girlfriend while you do it, and be thankful that you are talented enough to perform this piece. And who knows...maybe you and that girl will even fall in love as a result of this performance!!! Hahahahahaha! And thanks for posting.

  • crap i have to do this in my 6th grade musical with a girl that i HATE

  • Oops. I meant "Broderick." Sorry.

  • Agreed. Robert Preston was so far above Matthew Brokerick in skill and sheer charisma that I wonder why Disney even did this movie. There is simply no comparison. I would have been embarrassed if I were Brokerick; he looks and sounds like an anemic little boy compared to Preston.

  • @spacart1 It was like Ferris Buehler doing Harold Hill. It was cringe-inducing, and so was Kristin Chenoweth. A total miscast botch all around. Robert Preston RULES as Harold Hill.

  • That was just like WOW! O.O

  • This choreography is pretty spectacular.

  • This is choreographed INCREDIBLY well. I loved this song not only for Harold's singing and the acting that goes on during the song, but for the choreo.

  • Looooveeee. My favorite movie since I was 3.

  • The library I go to people do not start singing and dancing like that. How rude. And dancing on the benches....who knows where their shoes have been.

  • I was astonished when I saw the choreography. Very nice. And, the very end looked very clean also. Robert Preston was terrific!

  • awesome

  • my favorite movie!

  • my favorite movie!!!!!!!!!!

  • hard to believe shirley was pregnant enough for robert to feel the baby kick during "til there was you" she doesnt' look pregnat at all throughout the whole movie!

  • This is sexual harassment in the workplace! Shocking!

  • I tried the marshmallow thing, it didn't work.

  • @chrismarriott4

    HAHAH!!!!

  • @chrismarriott4 That must have been an interesting trip to the library.

  • @chrismarriott4 What marshmallow thing?

  • @chrismarriott4 sad day

  • "Marshmallow?" haha oh my gosh.

  • Truely awesome, the sadder but wiser girl for me!

  • My sister's middle name is Marion and my friends and I all called her Marion the Librarian after seeing this for the first time. XD

  • I saw both versions of this movie 5 days ago and this song and Lida Rose-Will I Ever Tell You have been in my head aever since? This is my favorite song of the whole movie! I hate musicals but I love this one! I don't think Broderick was that bad, I just think Preston was waaaaaay better! I saw the Disney one with description since I'm blind and I had to see this one with no description. It's a shame, I really want the 1962 version described to me! I just love love love this song and movie!

  • Way too rowdy. No money! Next round. And remember, SILENCE!

  • @DFDalton1962 lol i did not know any one but me liked silent libery:P

  • mathew brodick should be executed

this is mr robert preston role no other

  • listen once and sing for hours...its infectious

  • This is my FAVORITE song out of the entire production

  • @PhoenixFireeye

    Mine too.

  • who played tony (or the mayor's daughter's boyfriend)? judd nelson?

  • my drama club and i are doing this play and we started watching this one and finished with the other one and this one is so much better!(the librarian is a lot prettier in this one than the other one)oh and if u want to know im the mayors wife in the play!

  • im 12 and iv seen a lot of musical including this one

  • @ratgirl1111 im 12 and what is this?

  • @SpazzyTheEmo What do you mean what is this?

  • @PrinceLinkOfDragona lol it's an internet meme where an oblivious child comments on a video "im 12 and what is this" (usually to something like pr0n..)

i saw the resemblacne to ratgirl1111's comment, and i responded with the meme

  • @SpazzyTheEmo Ah, sorry, wasn't familiar with the meme

  • What a great talent! TIMELESS... this scene is so amazing!

  • This library is quite better than the library I go to. Loud, obnoxious cell phone, gum chewing, earphones turned up loud so others can hear your garbage ghetto types and people who are not there to read or use computers wisely, but also as a place for people to leave their kids while the mother and father is out cavorting around.

  • @rbsvy91368

Well said & well put! The manners of a lot of young people today are atrotrious. I love going to our local library...but once school lets out for the day, it fills up with a LOT of loud, rowdy & rude youngsters, of which very few are there to study, read or even go online quietly. Sad that those troublemakers are taking up space that the those truly interested in learning could use. Not to say that some are not well behaved. But they're in the minority. Sad... :(

  • @rbsvy91368 I call my local library the Public Internet Cafe.

  • Hard to believe she was pregnant at the time, isn't it!

  • now that my friends... is choreography

  • 0:36 "you were probably very young" excuse me? are you saying im old?

  • Shirley Jones is so adorable!

  • My favorite scene in this movie.

  • I love these guys with the glasses

  • Such brilliant choreography. Modern musicals could learn a thing or two from this scene!

  • @MELDAR i know right lol :)

  • My school is doing this play this year. We just finished watching the movie today. But we're using the Jr. Script so we aren't doing this song .w.

    DANG IT!!!

  • I just auditioned for this on thursday! we found out how we did on nxt friday!

  • @PrettyFli4aWhiteguy I wanna know how ya did! ^^

  • @JesusRocksAndRules im salesman 5( which gets the fun part in rock island) and farmer. and ima dancer! im in all the songs!!!!

  • @PrettyFli4aWhiteguy Are you saying your school did this play? and you are in it? or that u are in the movie? cuz the movie was made in 1962. and at the time ron howard. (who plays winthrup) was about 5 or 6. Assuming by your Youtube name you are not in your 60's or 70's I don't think it is the first.

If your school did the play. How did it go? This is my favorite movie of all time. since i saw it at the age of 14 in orchestra. we watched it every year since then in the class xD. LOVE it!

  • @hagen5690 haha im in the play currently. we havent started practicing yet lol

  • He is soooooo SMOOTH!!!!

    Ps- marshmallow! XD lol

  • Marshmallow!

  • This is probably my favorite song from The Music Man, but when I was in it, we used the Jr. script and they cut this song out. :( Well, I still love it. :D

  • @JesusRocksAndRules who were you in the play?

  • @missawesomex10 Sales(wo)man #1 (the one that says "You can talk, you can talk, you can bicker, etc...", Wells Fargo Wagon soloist ("in March I got a grey mackinaw"), and french horn player in the boy's band. (We had a huge shortage on guys, so the boy who played Winthrop was the only boy in the band at the end... XD)

  • @missawesomex10 I did this in a Dinner Theater in my Middle School In 99'. I tried out for the part that of Marcellus Washburn. Unfortunately, I didn't get that part, but I was lucky enough to get the part as Mayor Shinn It was the most amazing thing that I have ever been apart of.

  • The Music Man is a wonderful movie.

    I love it.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • his voice sort of annoys me. they are amazing actors. Kristin Chenoweth as Marian is adorable and cute. Shirley is stiffer but that is just their different versions of the character. I prefer the TV version, but this is still beautiful and amazing!!

  • My school jus did this play as our musical this year. it was awesome!!!!! this is my fav number :)

  • Haha its funny cuze at the begging of the movie she hated him then she fell in love with him at the end

  • I love the way that he so casually and easily incites the whole library into what is essentially very well choreographed chaos, and then sits so calmly as he watches Marian get swept up in it.

  • does anyone else see the penguin dance from mary popins in here cuz i certainly do...

  • Marian reminds me of Belle from Beauty and the Beast because their both made fun of, they both love books, and they both are love interests of a man.

  • One of the best show tune scenes ever. I can watch this over and over. It never gets old.

  • The funniest part about this is the nerdy guys with tight slacks.

  • I love this movie. It's so cute.

  • Marshmallow?

  • @Bfdidc gotta love that part.

  • @Bfdidc - LOL...That was a funny line. Maybe I should offer my librarian one..

  • I never noticed that the books the guys read in 4:00- coordinate with their outfits. Insanity. God, could watch this about a dozen times (oh, wait, I have).

  • Shirley Jones was pregnent during the making of this musical/movie.

  • @PaperAndKnives

God, no wonder she looks so hot...

  • 3:50 is hilarious.

  • I absolutley love this scene! i am playing Zaneeta coming up soon(:

  • I CANT BELIEVE THAT SHE'S PREGO IN THIS MOVIE AND SHE'S DOIN ALL THOSE DANCES MOVES...LOL

  • @wwechick09 ya how can she do that!!!

  • Oooh, his ass is SO banned from that library...

  • Marshmallow? O_0

  • Gosh, I love the sequence from 7:23-7:33.

*throws book* "Marshmallow?" *slams book* *stuffs faces w/marshmallow* *spit* *Madame Libware..." *kiss* *smack* "..rian" *whoosh*

Well, of course I love this entire number. =)

  • this is my favorite number

  • Finally, the original..

  • dang I'ld go crazy if everyone suddenly started dancing in a library

  • @chocostarfro

Oh, I don't know, I'd love it. it would be such a great flash mob.

  • Thank GOD for Robert Preston! I really don't like the new one with Matthew Broderick in it.

  • @deathbystiletto the new one is INSULTING

  • The background music is perfect, along with the extras looks, and the stars perfect facial expressions...love it!

  • he really knows how to get to her. isnt it funny that tommy and anita are reading romeo and juliet?? :)

  • 6:17 marian the naughty pole dancer

  • @celtticnesses rotflmao!

  • this is one scene where i think the newer version was better

  • Reminiscant of Seven Brides, wouldn't you say?

  • lol. At 6:13 "I don't need these!" *chuck*

  • Robert Preston was also the original Harold Hill on Broadway

  • I couldn't imagine musicals being taken in one full scene. Talk about some major cuts! Love the scene though :)

  • i love her face when he says "marbles."

  • i love his song

  • A little side note...this whole scene was filmed in one take...amazing considering the complexity of the whole thing.

  • @ipipe4u It isn't one take. There are cuts throughout.

  • @ipipe4u i find that difficult to believe.. whered you hear that?

  • Robert Preston is genius in this! Love him! No one can touch his performance of Harold Hill!

  • 4:04 haha good thing everyone has their dancin' shoes on!

  • I don't think anyone has ever even been slightly close to the brilliance that is Robert Preston's Harold Hill.

  • The marshmallow bit is HILARIOUS. I love this song so much, I listened to it every day when I was a kid :]

  • oh, this is my favorite part of The Music Man. our school is doing this play this year, and i'm definitely trying out for Marian because of this scene. :D

  • shirley jones is amazing!!

  • This is slightly funny.

  • This is like the perfect flirting library song lol
