Though a working family child in the anything but what looks like today greek capital of the 60's, i can tell you that all this has haunted me and marked my world as well...i saw the film four times within a year... the song being its highlight... what can i say? Those were the days my friends... Days of unspoiled innocence...
i reckon the plot was based partially on the film the blackboard jungle which was renowned for introducing rock n roll to the masses in england and of course starred sidney poitier.
THANK YOU!!! This clip includes the rare verse (at 1:09):
"Those awkward years, have hurried by. Why did they fly away? Why is it Sir, children grow up to be people one day? What takes the place of climbing trees and dirty knees in the world outside? What is there for you I can buy?
~ If you wanted the world I'd surround it with a wall, I'd scrawl these words with letters ten feet tall: To Sir, with love..."
@sandee12341 I'm not sure what you mean by three versions. The "awkward years" verse appears here, but I don't think it was ever in the single released by Lulu. I've seen numerous videos of her performing TSWL, and she generally repeats the last refrain. Are there additional (3rd) lyrics you've come across?
This song will endure as long as school endures! It encapsulates the adolescent maturing and the crush all children feel for a teacher or two. A classic song with beautiful lyrics beautifully sung like only the one artist on earth could sing and do it justice - lulu.
Listening to a music like this which time has buried deep into the recess of our brain suddenly wake us up triggering moments once forgotten to flood us with excitement and calm.... and joy and deep appreciation of the past wishing we were there again...
I love this movie because i went to a school similar to the one in the film in NYC. Every year we used to take a trip to the Museum of Natural History so this scene hits home, It really does.
Fantastic movie. Many hats off to the very creative person responsible for this scene. What a great job of matching the faces of the students with that of the artifacts of the museum. Fantastic song sung by someone with a great voice. Thanx.
god i was in junior hs school when this came out. it was as though they were filmin my school. i can relate to this film and yes i was a student at the time my self.

One of the great aa time films. Judy Geeson was HOT in the '60s, and it is one of Potier's very best films.

Frog = slang for rhyming = rap.
A sixties movie where the use of rhyming words is for the old people. Damn the English were rapping before the blacks here in the USA.
