I made my first batch this weekend with my custom made still from a 4 gallon stew pot. It is not fun and games but is tedious and time consuming because you have to constantly monitor it. Keeping the coil cool is a chore as the heat is intense. Living near sea level makes you heat to 205 before alcohol steam will move through your coil.
@pat1huey i cant send alink i have no pictures but it is a crock pot to boil andwith copper tubing through the top ran through the top of a field cooler(like they have by the bench at a football game)filled with ice water to cool the steam back to liquid and ran out the bottom side to dispense ps always throw out the first and last shotglass of every batch(they are almost pure ethenol)you could use those shots as jet fuel
@scottnsuzs The column has threads on the bottom. The lid has a hole just big enough for the threads to go through, and there is a thin jam nut I made that pulls the column base tight to the lid. Does that make sense? The paste just provides a seal. Everything else is just soldered. The paste could hold a line in place but wont take a lot of force. I have heard of people making an oatmeal or rye paste, but never tried it myself.
@pat1huey the column is made of copper right? if so, how did you get threads on it? I wanted to put a nut and washer on my line on both sides of the lid, but I was told that copper was too brittle to put threads on. I thought about soldering it, but I've heard that a lot of solder contains lead and cadmium, so I wasn't sure if that was safe.
@scottnsuzs Its a threaded male copper pipe fitting I soldered on the pipe. They sell them at any hardware store that sells copper plumbing materials. I took a threaded female fitting and cut the threaded end off to make the jam nut. The solder I used is clearly labeled lead free. I dont know about cadmium, but this is the same solder used for water lines. I'll check the label anyway.
@scottnsuzs The male fitting was half inch pipe thread, which means the threads were tapered. To get the jam nut to bottom out and tighten to the lid I had to re-tap the male threads. I took a half inch die and ran the male fitting through it backwards. It worked out pretty good, but there are other ways to attach a column. If you have any more questions just PM me and I'll help you as best I can.
how much ABV you can get? with my inox pot steel i get first of 40% and next 10% ABV plese loot at mine to meka an idea, and please respond on yours ABV
ok well the crock pot still hope their is no aluminium or plastic coming in contact with the hooch as ethanol leaches stuff out of copper so i think u can figure out what i mean their and its to open around the seals and that is were the merkieness is coming from in ur hooch if u do this for drinking try looking for a more subtable boiler i have a nice little set up and vids will be coming soon but mine is a proper set up so wont be able to help you with this through that
@chaosinhell666 The reason the distillate is cloudy is due to the soldering paste that was in the column. This was the first run of this setup. I am researching a different setup right now. The goal is to eventually make car fuel, not consumable alcohol.
@pat1huey look for a nixon stone or bokabob not sure of spelling on boka but u will find it through the nixon the boka is the cheaper than the nixon to build aslong as u have access to a oxy torch just be cairfull
@chaosinhell666 I'll look into the bokabob. I have heard of the nick stone, but I am now looking into something totally different. Thanks for commenting
@pat1huey well their u almost have one but u dont have the larger refluxing ability of a Nixon u can get 97% of Nixon and a boka if run properly but for a beginner and for fuel u are best off with a boka they are easier to operate and u can make a rig on their with small pipe and it will tell u the percentage that you are pulling off as u do no need to constant ally check just look i love mine
Man, you dont have a clue, I bet you burned 30 kilowatt hours of electric power just waiting on something to happen, get you a copper still and a propane cooker
congrats on your 1st run..that was my senior year high school project. 30 years ago.lol..had a laidback teacher...n like u said ..wasnt for drinkin (hadda take a sip tho.;))...when i get some time i post some vids might interest u.
What are you doing? If I don't know what I'm looking at how can this make any sense? No subtitles or anything to help, only experienced distillers can make any real comments.
@KEPoles "What are you doing?" A: Distilling alcohol with a still I built from copper water pipe attached to a crock pot. "If I don't know what I'm looking at how can this make any sense?" A: You can google the alcohol fuel manual, or go to homedistillerdotorg to research.
@pat1huey i hope your now using copper instead of plastic hoses now and filtering the shine with carbon for fish tank filters and some advice it works better if you take a plug and split it put it in the pot down in the mash and plug it in the wall the electric curent will work way better than the stove look it up im sure theres something about it on the web
not to mention, your distillate looks like dirty bath water! hope you didnt drink that shit! ive NEVER had anything that looked that polluted before. showing people this method is bad ju ju man.
dude, seriously, why are you collecting your ethanol through a plastic hose? you should do some more reading on HD.org's site and you will quickly see...plastic is no good!!!
@pat1huey I do realize this, i use food grade plastic for fermenting as well...the difference is in the fermentation bucket, there is a low proof of alcohol, generally 10-15% ABV, at best. when you run high proof concentrated alcohol through plastic, the potential to leach out chemicals from the plastic and break down the plastic is there...even if it is visually ok looking. NEVER will you find on the Homedistiller website anyone advocating the use of a plastic for a take off tube.
@ericcr This was the first time I used this setup. The reason the distillate is cloudy is because there was still crap in the column. I did not intend to drink anything from this setup, so the plastic tube sufficed for this setup. I explained that already in the comments. I always tell people to use food grade 304-316L stainless, copper, or glass for consumable alcohol. Even if the hose was copper, the distillate would not be consumable, because the lid is a type of acrylic.
@pat1huey I do a lot of reading at the HD site and the alcohol fuel manual. It is my goal to produce car fuel, so it is really efficiency and concentration that I'm after.
@pat1huey it was your cleaning run then...ok that makes sense. so your take off tube is a different material? what kind of still are you running now? still using the crock pot or have you upgraded?
@ericcr I have a concept for a vacuum distillation setup that uses a heat pump for efficiency. Its just a concept at this point, I'm still researching. You can see a picture at pat1hueydotcom.
Great setup here mate!! What temperature would you recommend for this kind of system?? Just want to make sure I don't poison anybody with my first batch!!
when this is distilled does it have a taste? ive heard that moonshine (distilled alcohol) tastes like dough. i wish to make it but not if it tastes like dough. also can i use any yeast? or does it HAVE to be distilling yeast?
@bubbajeasy There is no lead. There is probably some contaminents from the soldering paste, but I used lead free solder on the fittings. Same thing used on water pipes. If there were enough lead in the distillate to alter flame color, it would give it a pale blue tint. I wouldnt drink the distillate produced here either.
how many days did you let the mash work and what was the temp for cooking the finished mash looks like the stilled puked ie; overflowed into the drain tube
@casey1552 I let the mash ferment for 8-9 days. I didnt measure the temp. I just adjusted the controller until I felt heat at the top of the column. It did not puke into the drain tube. The distillate was cloudy because I had just built the column and there was still soldering paste in it which carried into the distillate.
verry nice blue flame never seen the crock pot idea humm i noted that you had a drip system not a steady flow this must of took a lot of time the reason is the pipe should be cooled more the water was a good idea not cold enough tho to give you a steady flow if you ran a cooper line filled with ice cold water half way and cooled it prob would of yielded more :) nice tho. good job
the steam supposed to go through the pig tail, submerged in circulating water, the alcohol comes out the pig tail. not water through the pig tail surrounding the steam
@spotmeadub Steam rises into through the column, into the offset condenser where the coil circulates water around the condenser to cool the vapors back into the liquid. I suppose it could be plumbed to work as you described, but this works fine.
sumone help reply to this. i made a mash with the right amount of everything and i have a gauge on my lid of what my mash is in and its ment to show bubbling and its been 1 day since we made it and so far it hasnt bubbled at all at least not that ive known
tried a crockpot b4 i knew what i was doing. ur going to have problem after problem. mostly keeping it sealed. you would have much better results with a pressure cooker. remove the bolt and it already comes with a hole and you can solder a solid seal where your pipe meets it
The only problem was the plastic lid broke. I shoudnt have used a paddle bit to drill it out. It made a bunch of fractures in the lid that when heated split. The next one will have a glass lid that I'm gonna ream out with a diamond dremel bit.
be cautous reaming glass. it fractures/explodes under the wrong conditions and with the wrong preperatons. i have several years of working as a glass cutter under my belt, under 2 diff companys. ur better off just getting a 1/2 in diamond bit. you can get them at any glass work stores
hey man looks like you are one the right path but you need to get rid of the plastic hose that your distilate is running through. If you were to put a valve on the distilate output and put ss scrubbers in the "column" you would have a nixon stone ofset refux column. This would be a liquid management system.
