Math teachers were always "different" in my experiences. It was a difficult subject for me from Algebra to Geometry to Trig....and every time from Jr. High through College, the teachers were always odd.

i realize your semester (quarter) is probably over and you are no longer taking this class, however, maybe a little help, for you or for a future student of your math teachers, would help.
What you need to do is document everything he says that may seem offensive or out of place as an educator. Make sure to keep things dated, timed, and exact wording. Then, when you believe to have enough, file a formal complaint to your school. There are procedures to get him reviewed and removed.
Senior year my math teacher was the basketball coach. Our team ended up winning the state championship.(Cool)BUT, Math class was an exercise in futility. BB was discussed and caused interruptions the entire time. I complained and nearly got the shit beaten out of my the BB players. Guy should have been reprimanded strongly. Wasted year. I've had some bad teachers - I've also had some good ones. The debate thing isn't necessarily bad, because it can provide a welcome break from if the subject matter is tough. However, to use it as a means of attempted indoctrination is WAY out of line.

Tell your principal or department head to put an end to this profiling. It is a way for your teacher to segregate the class, and could possibly lead to the teacher, either knowingly or unknowingly, being biased against those with whom he has political differences.
You do NOT have to reveal your politics in order to learn math. At least not in a public school. Not sure if the school is private or public, but if this is being done in a public school, you certainly have recourse.

They come to my class to learn arithmetic, algebra, and calculus, not Teacher's Opinion 101. Your math teacher is unprofessional and should be disciplined.

It's Sara. We did the same thing in discrete. This wasn't the first time he had expressed his views on corporal punishment to us, so when he chose that topic, we already knew why and knew what was coming. For a while, I thought he did well with letting us speak and figure things out for ourselves, but of course at the end, he refused to let us remain unconvinced that corporal punishment is right. Did he pull out the cat-o-nine tails pictures on you? I respect him, but there are lines.

I just asked my sister who's a retired teacher. She said you and any other students who feel the same way should go together to see the principal and others as needed...in the chain of command! Any such organizations are big on that. Give each step an opportunity to solve the problem before escalating to the next level. Parents, Principal, Guidance Counsellor, District Supervisor, School Board, the media. etc. I went to college in NC, and I know its tough. Be mature and resolute. Good luck!

I've had some bad teachers - I've also had some good ones. The debate thing isn't necessarily bad, because it can provide a welcome break from if the subject matter is tough. However, to use it as a means of attempted indoctrination is WAY out of line.

Tell your principal or department head to put an end to this profiling. It is a way for your teacher to segregate the class, and could possibly lead to the teacher, either knowingly or unknowingly, being biased against those with whom he has political differences.
You do NOT have to reveal your politics in order to learn math. At least not in a public school. Not sure if the school is private or public, but if this is being done in a public school, you certainly have recourse.

i totally agree... teachers need to learn that just because they have higher education dosen't make what they say law... there are teachers in my school who whenever you say something different from what they think even if you can back it up, its wrong because they are god and know everything there is to know, and then you get SFA done in that class because you and that teacher are like arguing your points of veiw so you learn nothing and its frustrating when you get to like finals and you (tbc)

When i was at school i used to believe that to become a teacher you need to became i little bit of a psycho :P! When i met the headteacher of my highschool,after i had finished it,he told me that he influensed the other teachers to obtain a lower grade for my certificate...just because he didn't like my behaviour...can you imagine that?Fortunatelly life doesnt depend on certificates.Intelligence and ability to adapt to new conditions is much more valuable...

That is a flagrant abuse of your rights as a student and someone should report him. He obviously has personal problems that are spilling into his teaching life (duh) but this needs addressing pronto and with some delicacy. Good Luck. Ask your Mom for some help/suggestions. Sometimes young people aren't listened to, for any number of bad reasons.

I'm a math teacher and I have political views of my own. Strong views, which I can defend with serious reasoning. But my students don't know them, or at best merely suspect them. I don't wear my "No on 8" button to class, but they might see the "No on 8" bumpersticker on my car in the faculty parking lot (if they even know it's my car). They come to my class to learn arithmetic, algebra, and calculus, not Teacher's Opinion 101. Your math teacher is unprofessional and should be disciplined.

I have never heard of a debate in math class before!? I'm home-schooled but i have a bunch of friends that go to public and private schools and i just have never heard of a thing like that. When you talk about your math teacher (not just in this video but in other ones), it sounds like he has this ONE opinion and he thinks that EVERYONE ELSE should have the same. It's Sara. We did the same thing in discrete. This wasn't the first time he had expressed his views on corporal punishment to us, so when he chose that topic, we already knew why and knew what was coming. For a while, I thought he did well with letting us speak and figure things out for ourselves, but of course at the end, he refused to let us remain unconvinced that corporal punishment is right. Did he pull out the cat-o-nine tails pictures on you? I respect him, but there are lines.

carl, you should say something to some administration higher up. if the debate was in your math class was at least an open and accepting forum for differing opinions it would be one thing, but the fact that you're not learning the material AND the discussion is completely biased makes it something that needs to be addressed.

I just asked my sister who's a retired teacher. She said you and any other students who feel the same way should go together to see the principal and others as needed...in the chain of command! Any such organizations are big on that. Give each step an opportunity to solve the problem before escalating to the next level. Parents, Principal, Guidance Counsellor, District Supervisor, School Board, the media. etc. I went to college in NC, and I know its tough. Be mature and resolute. Good luck!
