The timbers inside the statue would decompose if it were to become buried and the statue would collapse. I also figure the Apes would scrap it for the copper.
True. Besides Planet of the Apes takes place sometimes in the year 4300, and the idea that 2300 years of neglect wouldn't have made the statue disappear long ago is absurd.
However that's just nitpicking and doesn't detract the power of the all time greatest twist ending.
The pyramids were built by solid limestone and these erode very slowly. The pyramids is build in a very stable shape and is solid, save for a few chambers inside. The whole shape of a pyramid is ideal for lasting for millenia, hence they were built this shape.
The statue of liberty is made out a metal armature (framework) supporting the structure, covered with copper plates, which is corrosive.
Completed in 1886 it was already renovated in 1938.
@McLarenMercedes It was also renovated in 1986 (if I remember right) with anti-corrosion protection and, at the time, they said they did a lot of restoration work to help prevent decay that the 1938 restoration help cause.
After the 1938 renovation, they needed to do a major restoration in 1984-1986, at which point it was closed for the public. It had deteriorated too much.
Now imagine there's no humans to restore it, every 100 years or so. I'll give it 100 years tops before it collapses.
It's hollow, and stands on a metal frame, hardly as stable as a pyramid with 2,3 million limestone blocks, wouldn't you say?
I could buy that, kidstl. Very good point particularly regarding the Statue of Liberty. Makes good sense; in fact, I would accept your theory over any other! Thanks.
I figure 2000 years of evolution as far as the geographical aspect and unstable teutonic plate activity could have shifted & shuffled everything around. The aftermath of a full-scale, thermonuclear war can also affect environmental conditions albeit only a couple hundred years. No doubt Ape City and wherever Taylor travelled had to be well within the New York area, even a microscopic section of the Forbidden Zone, which I imagine resembled most of the rest of the planet. Just a theory...
really quite simple...the atomic war was in reality very limited...tactical nukes were used at the start, then exotic weapon systems were used...telsa weapons, which caused rapid earth change and say tidal waves destroying coastal areas, like nyc, which looks to be buried under by dirt, the statue maybe was chemically treated during the 1986 rehab to resist decay and was simply buried by the dirt as the tidal wave receeded, and years latter was becoming exposed
So one question I always wondered. Was the Statue of Liberty moved to that place somehow by drifting in the oceans or was it actually so far into the future, mountains started to forum in New York? If the latter, I doubt the Statue could have been stayed perserved like that. Wasn't it corroding only after a 100 years in real life?
Well, I think POTA is set something like 3000 years in the future, so I suppose that mountains could have started to form; having said that, there would surely be traces of buildings from Manhatten still around if the Statue Of Liberty survived that long. So maybe it has been drifting in the ocean...
Good analogy shafty. I still suspect however the the currents from the ocean in hundreds if not thousands of years would have slowly eroded the deep markings of the statue at least. There should technically be no facial features really. Regardless, it's still one of the best endings in showbizz and I'd have it no other way. :D

i copied both movies, then used the fade to black at the end of the first one, then merged it with the fade from black opening in the second movie when you first see brentts crashed shipe.

Gotta admit, hearing Cornelius read from the apes "Book of Laws" or whatever-little has changed, hasn't it?

The statue of Liberty has been blasted off its pedestal, by a thermonuclear bomb.

@McLarenMercedes Did the Pyramids disappear from the eons of neglect? No.
The statue would have been in worse shape than was seen but we would have still known what it was even after 2300 years.
