Linda totally masters this wonderful old song, but I've always wondered if it would have been put together so well without EmmyLou. I think it's EmmyLou's influence that brings in the fiddle, steel guitar, mandolin, etc. No matter what song or who she accompanies, the plaintive tones of those instruments seem to be woven into the music at just the perfect moment and strain. I have to believe it's EmmyLou's knowledge of country music that gets credit for that. She's superb in every way.
My mom used to play this album over and over when it first came out (which must have been '74 or '75) and this is the song that has given me a lifelong love of steel guitar. We lived in Colorado then, and in "79 we moved to Tucson, Arizona, where Linda Ronstadt is from ( Rincon high, class of "62, if that's wrong, someone correct me, please) . I will forever love the music of this rare rose of the desert! Love ya Linda!!!!!
Emmylou Harris has based a second career on singing backup for many other singers. Her pure, faultless voice is always in demand -I would guess she helps the lead singer to carry the song and backup singers get well paid too! especially the more famous ones.
Back in the late70s and early 80s, you could not attend either 's concert w/o seeing both. It was a very special time, to even see Emmylou with Doc Watson and Byron Berline. A sacred memory.
I never did see Linda Ronstadt live but I would have loved to.I've seen Emmylou Harris live once and she was awesome! They could and still can harmonize better than anybody else!
@landrykkb I did see her & the Eagles in Toronto in late 70's. I loved them both. They were great. I would love to hear her again in concert.. Eagles are touring again, but not Linda?
On Hank Jr's song "Stoned at the Jukebox"..he talks about playing "I CAN'T HELP IT IF I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU"...This is the version he was referring to...
I'm not sure if you've discovered this since you posted here 2 years ago,but this song is available on a 2 CD compilation titled Linda Ronstadt:The Capitol Years, which features her first four albums on the Capitol label.I fell in love with Linda's cover of this the first time I heard it.
@landrykkb Thanks, I will look for it. She was "the singer I wanted to be" when I was a girl. I hope it's available in Canada. I loved this song all of her others too. She was an icon in the 70's.
