The movie was almost complete and they realized there wasn't a scene with Chase and Murray together. They threw this ad-lib scent together for that purpose. Chase said he thought Murray wa going to kill him when he was driving the mower in another scene's filming. Murray was nuts. In a good way.

Harold Ramis(director of the film) deserves a lot of credit too for not being too controlling, and just letting Bill, Chevy, and Rodney be themselves.

The genious thing about this scene is that it was all improvised. No script, no lines to memorize, just 2 great comedians doing what they do best, being funny.

Too bad 2 of the great comedy figures of the last generation didn't get along. It's not a coincidence that this is the only movie that featured both stars.

I don't know about the "going half" on a bag between the two. Chevy and Bill had somewhat of a rivalry stemming from SNL. This is their only scene together ever in a movie. This scene was made up by both of the actors though. Awesome flick. lol

From what I heard, there was a lot of bad feelings by the other cast members about Chevy leaving. When his movie career started out slow he wanted to return but they had replaced him with Bill Murray. When Chevy hosted in season two there was a war of words and it became a fistfight. There's been bad blood since. I saw it on SNL True Hollywood Story on E!

Chevy Chase talked about this when he was on Howard Stern... the rivalry started because Bill and John Belushi were jealous of Chevy's rise to stardom (chevy was like the #1 movie star comedy wise back then for years) they got in a fight when Chevy came back to host SNL because John and Billy were talking smack in Chevy's back and the word got to Chevy and they got in an argument right before air time, John tried to squash the argument and got punched by Chevy and Billy lol

if this scene looks awkward is because chase and murray can't stand each other. when chase guest hosted SNL in 79. He got in a fist fight backstage with murray. this is legendary. they each needed convincing to do this scene. i saw this on a documentary
