We all have been 'drunk n dirty' in one sense or another, sadness finds an expression thru whatever means, tragedy upon heartache upon suffering and we still go on....press forward Little Feat, for no matter where you are, you are there in spirit Lowell...for the band plays on. God rest your soul with Ritchie's and may you all play again together when we all,as the brides, see Jesus...
@fanzappa It is said that he wrote the song while he was with Zappa, but it was recorded for the Little Feat album, George had hurt his hand in an accident with a model airplane, so Ry Cooder sat in and played the song's slide part. Lowell's accident is referenced on the cover art of the band's 1996 album Under the Radar. "Willin'" was re-recorded (this time with Lowell playing) on Little Feat's second album Sailin' Shoes.Album art is the Same artist that did Weasles ripped my flesh
@fanzappa - It's like doubling down. Twice as much great music. Lowell/Little Feat and Zappa - both cranking out great albums. How can you beat that. Saw em both. collected both.
@Shellynn123 Amen to that!! Some versions of the tale suggest that Frank fired him because he had way too much talent.. Another version says that Frank fired him for doing a 15 minute guitar solo wth his amp turned off.. I guess we will really never know..But during this concert, this is how Lowell decided to introduce the song.
@jabuhrer1 - I saw Frank Zappa record a live album at the Armadillo in Austin (Bongo Fury with Captain Beefheart)... a number of us carried in a rather large hookah and were smoking it near the stage. Zappa made some comment about "you folks smoking those herbal materials in front of the stage need to be careful, this place is a firetrap!" Funny...
I still love Hot Rats , Apostrophe, Overnite Sensation... a lot of good musicians played with Frank over many years.
@bobyoung53 Sure, he claimed to hate drugs and probably did. And he was more strict about drug use than most band leaders. But it is well documented that many drug users played in his band throughout the years. And, as I said, he wrote many songs about drugs himself, which cannot be denied. So it doesn't make sense that he would fire someone for writing a song "about drugs." There obviously had to be more to it than that.
@casualtySR I've always read that the real story is that Zappa "fired" Lowell when he heard Willin' because he actually thought it demonstrated that he was too good of a song writer to just be a guitar player in someone else's band. In other words, he was trying to push him out on his own so he could do his own thing. That's what Zappa himself and many others said. And it makes sense, and it sure worked out good, right? Zappa has many many songs about drugs.
Lowell was definitely up there with Zappa when it comes to creativity and songwriting...but I would say that lowell George was one the most soulful singers and guitar players of all time
@ebjornnelson i would not say that. zappa "created" over 70 albums of material. frank never wrote a ballad like "willin", though he did write "camorillo brillo".
i just can't bear to see the band without LOWELL, its just no the same. Wish em well but something inside of me died with Lowell. Maudlin you say, well you just ain't had your nuts in the vice of life where your only friend was a MF who told you how squeeeeeeezed his were from time ta time with his music as artistically funky as LOWELL.
First time I saw Little Feat was at Winterland in San Francisco after their first album..They opened for Charlie Daniels and the Marshall Tucker Band...They only got 45 minutes and I wasn't really into the other bands....
Yep, he was on Wesels ripped my flesh and Burnt Weeny Sandwich until his drug use forced Zappa to tell him he needed to get his own band together.. Soon after he founded Little Feet with Roy Estrada, another Mother member.
I enjoyed this so much today! What a cool post:) I always loved Little Feat so much!! My very first tube post a couple years back was a LF cover. Endless stars! *****
Glad that you enjoyed it!I have so many nice responses to this song. Basically I put it up in response to a comment about Frank Zappa NOT being into drugs.I know it's hard to believe heheh , but it is true. I really enjoy your Little Feat- All that you dream Cover.. Would love to hear you do some more Feat covers!
I only saw Little Feat once, in 1990 or so, long after Lowell George. They opened for Jimmy Buffet, and did so much better than him that they put him to shame. They didn't do this song, but did most of the ones we are familiar with. As far as YouTube pulling videos, it is pretty lame, but at least they last for a while, and you can always download them. Among the lamest complainers about video posts is Van Morrison. There were some great videos of a Belfast concert, and he had them all pulled.
I remember that Morrison video from Belfast. It featured a very young Katie Kissoon singing back up. Incredible video and he had it pulled. I love VM but I won't buy any of his music because of that!
It is a shame that youtube will not let you post stuff like this anymore due to copyright crap.. is going to be a shame when they start taking the stuff off.. Like anyone is going to lose money by posting a song on Youtube.. Gimme a break.. Dont believe me? Try and post a mantage of pics with a song in the background, or a live performance.. they will take the audio off it.. Bastadges!!
@CRAIGARRR I posted a version of Willin a while back with my own montage and after 30,000 views it was taken down for copyright reasons - however after another year or so, it mysteriously re-appeared, but with ads running over the bottom of the screen - so I don't know what the deal is but it is still up and running, maybe it is only about money and advertising
Well said. I have a guitar that looks pretty much like the one Lowell always played...the natural wood Fender Strat. I use it as my slide guitar. I also use wrench sockets on my pinky finger when I play slide. I got that from Lowell. They work! Dude knew what he was doing! There are alot of Lowell fans around...glad to be amongst good people...CHEERS!
Wales eh. Thank you guys for giving us Joe Calzaghe. I became a fan of his a few years ago. When he fought Roy Jones last November I was yelling and screaming at the TV in pure bliss because he was destroying Roy Jones. Roy Jones was once the baddest dude on the planet and Calzaghe gave him a lesson. Super Joe=Pure class! Up Gary Speed and Ryan Giggs as well. Good things come from Wales!

That's sort of what Zappa said after the fact...
He said I knew his talent was too great to remain just a band member...
I knew his potential was so much more (paraphrasing of course)
