  • This performance won her a grammy!

  • 2 words to describe this performance beautiful and speechless this woman could sing the phone book to me all day

  • The greatest and most moving song of love ever. Patti does a remarkable version showing just how deep she is. I loved Piaf and Labelle does it great justice.

    plumdancer9

  • This is without a doubt my favorite song of all times and I truly adore this Patti "treatment" of the number. Just as much as I adore Piaf's rather humble original rendition I can truly appreciate the fact that Patti pulls out all the stops.

  • There is a really beautiful version of this by believe it or not, Cory Hart, it's one of the slightly different translations but definitely worth checking out.

  • What year was this?? Beautiful!

  • I like Patti Belle, but I do not like the tempo she does here and I don't like her phrasing. I think Groban does a much better job and Celine Dion does a beautiful job also because, of course, her French is flawless. It really needs to be sung in French to get that WOW factor ! If you get the chance, watch Groban perform this in his DVD - blows my socks off! He has great pucker power !

  • @solateado Who asked YOU! SOme of us love this version!

  • Patti lost so many people in her life. I can feel the emotion

  • nice nice voice !

  • This woman ALWAYS seems to surprise me!!!!! i just love her emotions through her facial expressions, her wardrobe (because she wears the right type of gown for that right type of song). that dress was so elegant and beautiful, just like that song and that performance!!! nobody can't tell me about my Miss Patti LaBelle!!!! I need to get this whole concert-dvd from amazon.com.

  • Sad Story, .If you listen 2 the wordz

  • Brilliant, moving performance.

  • It just doesn't get any better than this. A divine performance.

  • She is simply the best!

  • a great performance, but it seems like she has a personnal thing with this song, a true diva

  • Thanks for posting one of my favourite songs

  • Still beautiful to listen to. She made it her song and Edith Piaf would have been so proud!

  • American style, incongruous

  • American style!!!!! This great performance was most eloquent which is Simply Perfection this "American style". Now eat your pathetic heart out.

  • Non merci !!

  • OUI MERCI!!MERCI QUI!!!!!hell yes to this performance eat ya heart out frenchie

  • @SilverAdonis ....."eat ya heart out frenchie"???? a little respect for the woman who actually wrote the words (contrary to what LaBelle said here Piaf actually penned the original lyrics) to express her emotions about Her tragedy, wouldn't be lost in this instance, irrespective of LaBelle's dynamite rendition. Personally I feel that for this song, given it's history, a more simple interpretation is convincing and appropriate, but that's just my perference.

  • HOLY......WOW! If you didn't just feel that...I wouldn't tell nobody.

  • Patti,,,Edith will be smiling down on you...Pure Class !!!!!

  • i was unsure at the beginning. holy fuck she killed that ending

  • My good God that is some tremendous singing.

  • Ms. Patti La Belle did a great justice to this classic French song. I know the late Ms. Edith Piaf will be very proud. Bravo Ms. La Belle!

  • i need a cigarette and a tissue

  • @steviegurash me too hahahahahahaaa cigarrette and tisue the perfect combination for this

  • This is the best song on the DVD. Patti LaBelle One Night Only is the title its a must have and only @0$ wheni got it. Patti is great, Mrs. Edith would love this

  • I just came back from my good friend Aaron O. Wallace funeral. I had to play this song in memory of him. Thanks Patti, you know how to sing a song girl. I needed to hear this right now.

  • Well, the rest of my day is shot. Holy mahzolee. Girl . . . .

  • OMG....4 friggin modulations, and all that drama!!!! Edith would be proud.....

  • I LOVE THIS SONG and love Miss Patti!

  • You have good taste!!

  • I've been looking for this! I finally have it to add to my personal collection of her work. Whom ever wrote that negative review of this video shame on you!!!!! WORK PATTI!!!!!

  • Any song that gets the Patti treatment becomes transformed into something

    magical. Patti is unique.

  • Bless u patti, i cant stop watching this vid, its so wonderful, also somewhere is another great !!!

  • absolutley breathtaking, i adore Patti, id love to see the rest of this concert, thanks so much for giving us the opportunity watch a real star !!

  • This was a PBS concert which was recorded for PBS and which is definitely available on Netflix or Blockbuster. It was amazing. They used it as a fundraiser one year.

  • MAGNIFICENT! Muy Bonito!!!!

  • I wish they had let Miss Patti play Shug Avery in the film "The Color Purple"!!!

  • Patti really brings this song to the table and lifts the bar on it!! Brava!!

  • I have posted before - this is the most beautiful song ever written...Whether Piaf, LaBelle or Groban - it is clearly the most beautiful song - EVER.

  • I agree,it's my fav love song too ^^

  • The proverbial question - "If you could take one song to a deserted island, which one would it be?" Clearly this magnificant song. In a few short minutes, we experience epic longing, pain and a range of human emotions simply not there in most songs. Edith Piaf suffered in life, and we benefit through her music. The fact that La Belle performes it here is icing on the cake.

  • brilliant

  • Brenda Lee's version of this song is lovely in my opinion but this version is special because there is so much emotion behind it. Theres not many live performances that can make me cry but this is surely one of them. One of my all time favorites by any artist. You could just say you didnt like it thats your opinion without being so vicious.

  • Tell Miss Brenda to take the cotton balls out of her nose and sing!!

  • if you have ever REALLY loved-you too should feel this song- amazing as always- thank you Patti-

  • The audience loved it which is what matters.

  • willmurphy is a very troubled soul. He left a wish for me to die a painful death, then blocked responses.

Will, I hope you are not the same kind of tyrant at home that you are when hiding here on youtube.

  • AMAZING .AMAZING. AMAZING!

    BRAVO PATTI! jE T"AIME !!

  • Mais que c'est beau - gros merci Mme Labelle

  • 'If it seems that everything is lost I shall smile and never count the cost.' I'm going through a break-up right now and boy do those word hurt but they heal at the same time. What a song, what a voice! I know that Patti was going through a break-up after 20 years of marriage, that's why she hesitates and says, "I'm gonna, I'm gonna" as a message to her fans and friends backstage. She was some how able to will herself to get through the song as the audience helped her. What a voice, what a pro

  • Patti is in a class all by herself! She's marvelous!

A lovely French version, other than Piaf's, is from the singer Maurane.

What a testament to love this song is!

  • a truly genuineand brilliant performanceof a great song---

  • BTW, the Corey Hart version of this song is on youtube, check it out, Hymn to Love.

  • One of the most beautiful songs of all time performed by one of the greatest voices of all time. AMAZING!

This truly is my favorite song and I try to collect it form as many performers as I can. If you want to hear an amazing male cover of it check out Corey Hart (don't laugh) it is a slightly different translation and is stunning.

The title most commonly given this song in English is Hymn To Love.

  • This song and performance makes me cry everytime I see it and hear her sing it. Go ahead Patti Labelle and Ms. Edith Piaf. Wonderful and Brilliant.

  • lovely!

  • Can't stop watching it!

  • This is a wonderful version of a song I remember being popular when I was nine years old. Please check out Kay Starr's version. That's the one I remember.

  • Wow this made me cry too, i was not expecting that. So beautiful, one of my favorite live performances by any artist ever. Edith would be proud.

  • Makes me think of my friends and family that have passed on. If I could catch a shooting star for them I would.

  • Beatiful, just wonderful. Patti is a wonderful singer, because she is puts her heart and soul into her music

  • shajudd in every situation you can look for the gold or look for the filth & what you'll look for you'll find.

  • shes huuman why cant she cry???the song is touching and that a real singer emotion some singers dont have that power a few singers like that? mary j blige. fantasi keyshia cole

  • i remember on the cd i heard she talked about her sister jackie who died of cancer thats why it was so emotional

  • Wonderful song and Miss Labelle delivers it in her own very special way!!! Patti`s emotions that night was from the breck up of her 20+ year marriage that year. I have seen her in person 3 times and she allways delivers a fantastic show. A true performer in everyway. The newer younger stars can`t hold a candle to her talent. God bless you Patti Labelle, your a angel from heaven placed here on earth for us to enjoy!!! Love you!!!

  • I also had never heard of Edith Piaf... until Miss Labelle sang this song... and I fell in love with it. American Idol contestants take notice. This is making "someone else's Perfect song" your own. This a great concert... I have the DVD. If you can... rent it. You will not regret it.

  • she's one of the greatest of all time

  • go a head ms patti!!! i love the piano on this song!!! dito my poor patti is cry ... she is soo emotional jus like me ... i cant wait to sing w her on stage once i reach my dream!

  • At first when the clip started I was not impressed ...but soon after.. the emotion portrayed by the singer was simply amazing .

    A truly great performance. !!

  • This song always brings tears to my eyes. It is so beautiful! I am crying now...

  • Thanks for sharing, such a beautiful performance.

  • WOW! I am moved.

  • I was not aware of Edith Piaf's version until I saw it on myspace. I love the way Patti Talked about her. Patti LaBelle did a favor if you think about it. By singing this song she has people researching and identifying who the artist is. Let's look at the bright side of things Please!!!

  • Patti did do her a favour, I could not agree more. I found out about Edith Piaf in the same way. I really wish people would stop trying to compare artists with COMPLETELY different styles and just enjoy and be thankful that there is variety. If you don't feel either version, lie down, your dead you just don't know it yet.

  • Right on.You said it so well.I told my friend about this song & he went out & bought Edith Piafs cd. Im really sick of the amateur critic attitude.Oh wow can I quote you on that last line? Peace.

  • Lol, quote away! I am glad I'm in good company. I too am exhausted by people just trying to shred a vid because it doesn't resonate with them and who are upset that for other people, it does.

  • Wow. Not a word-for-word translation of the song, but it doesn't have to be. The emotion is there. Merci Mme LaBelle for bringing this song to new life.

  • Bravo!!!

  • laron 214: I am from Europe, sorry for my imperfect English, but do you know French? The letter´s song of Piaf, is absolutely different at letter´s song Patty. I love Patty, but she must sing her style and this song isn´t her style. Sorry. My ears are good, you must know others singers and music differents of USA, your mind is very short...bye!

  • I understand your statement. However, it is virtually impossible to literally translate a song. I am familiar with Piaf's version and noticed the differences in the lyrics. Piaf is an icon and this song will always be associated with her. However, Patti's version kept the spirit of the song intact and added another dimension to it. I think Piaf would have been honored. As for Patti's style: Hey, the woman could sing a commercial jingle with such emotion that it would make you cry.

  • nice Patti -

  • that performance is a shit. Sorry!! I love Patty , but this song is Edith, only great Piaf!!

  • honey you should have your vision and hearing tested.

  • Oui, je parle francais. T' es espec de con. D'accord?

  • Hmmmm, Patti does as only Patti can BRILLANT !!!

  • Marvelous Patti, marvelous voice.

  • PATTI is amazing ... different arrangement and style than PIAf .... BOTH ARE GREAT ...... BRAVO

  • I was at this taping at Hammerstein Ballroom. Miss Patti was diagnosed that year with Diabetes, she had just gotten divorced. True talwnt allows for an Artist to let their feelings flow though their music. And, This I feel, is what will always make Miss LaBelle distinctive from all the others.

  • Thanks for the posting. I consider this one of her 3 greatest live performances. It always stumped me as to what she was going through that she almost could not get through the song. But like any world class artist, she prvailed! Brava, Patti! PS- the self imposed reprise is pure magic!

  • Hymn A L'Amour - what a performance. That came from the big heart of Miss. Patti Labelle.

  • wow, it make me cry so much...she is inbelievable....she is the only one to give me goose bumps like this....i really respect her...and i think she is one of the best....

  • I have loved Patti from the start. This tops anything I've ever seen, by ANYONE! The masterful way she continues to stay with the song while attempting to surpress her own spontaneous emotional response is what proves her to be the Pro that she is. And then in the last key change when she takes a breath and yells out, you can feel her own persoanl pride and joy of her performance! SHE FELT IT and WE WERE RIGHT THERE WITH HER! (and Edith Piaf and her lover too)

  • Bravo Patti, Bravo!

  • Heart wrenching! Moving! Unforgettable!

  • wow!!!

  • Edith Piaf would have approved, I'm sure.

  • i saw patti on sesame street. who woud've ever thought someone could tare up the abc's? she is so awesome.

  • A French song written by the French singer Edith Piaf and sung for her lover Marcel Cerdan, a french boxer. She wrote it after his death in a plane crash...

  • Hearing her sing this one of Piaf's signatures makes my heart ache and the tears well up. Absolutely a beautiful and totally believable performance.

  • Wow! She was really crying! Powerful performance! 5 stars from me.

  • Very emotional, Thank you very much for sharing this vid. this is one of my Mama's favorite lullaby. she used to sing this song to us when i was just a little kid. Thanks Edith Piaf(RIP) and thank you very much Patti Labelle for a beautiful rendition of this song. you're such a great diva.

  • Her performance of this song was so brilliant, that it made HER cry(me, too)!!! Whoa! Listen to the tone, the depth, the range, the resonance, ALL PERFECTION!!! Michel Legrand's work would flatter her voice, as well, I think. That said, this lady's voice DESERVES a Steinway/Bosendorfer accompaniment, not some dinky SYNTH keyboard! I mean a great, big Grand Piano, too!

This lady's an Opera singer, and she deserves the grandest(gr) accompaniment available!!!

  • Yes, you're absolutely right "CHRYS1001", this is also my opinion. a grand piano built by Henry E. Steinway or Bosendorfer perhaps

  • Tremendous performance by a true Living Legend, the one, the only, Patti LaBelle!

  • Patti is a walking and singing woman of greatness and a symbol of all that is wonderful.........Smokey's C4 aka Coyote

  • My all-time favorite Patti performance! I bawl like a baby every time I hear/see it!!!! OH PATTI....

  • I love this song, but I don't know how Patti manages to sing through the tears. Beautiful song!

  • And of course I love Patti!

  • I just don't know how she does it. So much power.

  • OH HOW I LOVE MY PATTI SHE SINGS FROM HER HEART & SOUL! TO BE KNOWN AS AN R&B GREAT SINGING A SONG LIKE THIS MAKES HER NOT JUST AN R&B LEGEND BUT IT PROVES SHE IS AN ALL AROUND CLASS ACT 24/7 & ALWAYS WILL BE! PATTI LABELLE IS THE GREATEST & WE LOVE HER FOR THAT!

  • TEARS!!!!

  • Anthonyhaag You Said ,It impressed beyond words! How she sang it was powerful and meant it to be true from the heart!!

  • this has been a favorite song of mine for many years from Edith Piaf. patti has done such a wonderful job and the arrangement is outstanding. the english lyrics are right on target. I am so so impressed beyond words. She totally brings out all the emotion of that song, exquisitely.

  • I luv u, really luv u

  • it's an emotional ride for me as well soulman...no one else in this world can sing like her..

  • 1st class is it!!! Thanks Patti! She won a Grammy for this whole DVD/CD Combo!

  • Best vocal perfomance!! sure the best!!

  • WHAT a first class lady.

  • This is one of those moments that stays for the eternity!

No words to describe, I hope u feel all the emotions that I feel when I listen this Patti perfomance!!
