1:12 to around 2:40... half the emotions known to man are inside it. The better half... If anyone wants to hear another rich string theme in 3/4 from Horner, check out The Ludlows from Legends of the Fall! (if you haven't already heard it)
I was reading the comments and all of them are very interesting. But I am with my son when he remind me the scene when Bernie went to the dock to say goodbye his friends; they replied that Rose is dead and there is nothing here. Bernie said: "this is my home". Indeed, mostly of them returned to home, despite all troubles, pain and suffering, we must find the place where peace and love is.
heard the music in glory tried to figure out where I heard it before. I guess its just the James Horner style since I hear the familiarity in all the films he's done
The sequence where the alien died, Brian Dennehy played the part when his character felt the first time ever the feeling of sorrow so well that I'm surprised that he didn't get nominated for an Oscar in that part. I mean to play like you don't know this feeling whereby you do is in my opinion so damn hard and he did it so great and moving that it's a shame that this kind of acting didn't get appreciated in the way it deserved!
I'm 13 so obviously I didn't see it when it came out. However one night I couldn't fall asleep so I stayed up and turned on the TV. I put the channel to "This DFW" which plays many movies from the 60's to 80's and sometimes 90's.
Is it daft that I got ridiculously excited about Super 8 almost solely because of this music being on the beginning? I love James Horner; his music just reminds me of my child hood and how magical these movies all were to me. Check out Casper's Lullaby for another piece of his that really makes your spine tingle.
One of the many things I found interesting about this movie was that the actor Wilford Brimley who played Ben Luckett was in real life only 50 years old when he starred in this movie and yet he was playing someone in his 70's. Whilst the actor Don Ameche who played Art Selwyn was in real life 76 years old when he starred in this movie. It's interesting that in the movie they are playing as old Best Friends yet in real life Don Ameche is old enough to be Wilford Brimley's Father. :D
Cocoon,Troy,Titanic,Avatar,The land before time,Zorro,Casper,The perfect storm etc...This man is a prodigy hes legendary! hes one of my top composers number 2 is Hanzs Zimmer and the rest, well it's up to you guys :P
A mix of two other James Horner compositions: Legends of the Fall and Land Before Time. Great composer...but many of his compositions sound so similiar.
@bmshaven No different than John Williams, Thomas Newman, Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry; they are all fantastic composers whose scores offer similarities that allow listeners to recognize their work; sounding similar is not a demerit, but more of a trademark.
I was 11 yrs old when my mom took me to see Coccoon in theaters...even though it was a movie with a bunch of old fogies, I remember it touching my little heart even way back then, James Horner's score had A LOT to do with that I'm sure, very soothing, almost haunting at times! Beautiful!
Cocoon was the best mixture of story, family values, life, friendship, humor, adventure, vision, and so many other things. It told the story of the change in our lives as we age (something so many people overlook and therefore don't plan for).
Also, Tahne Welch was terrific as the alien girl. Brian Dennehy was terrific as the alien leader. And all of the elderly cast (including, but not limited to Don Ameche and Wilford Brimley) did an extra special job.
@McSuperfly101 yeap, I saw the Super 8 trailer and I recognize the music from somewhere so I've been searching for old spielberg movie trailers until I remembered the music was from cocoon
A few weeks ago I was listening to Class FM and I swear they played this combined with Titanic. Does anyone know if Horner composed a piece where combined the two? I can't remember the name but it was something about the ocean...
Amazing and very beautiful movie. Visual effects were brilliant for that time, no wonder the movie won the Oscar. The 80's had some kind and sweet Sci-Fi films - E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Flight of the Navigator and Cocoon of course. I like the fact that it were calm films - not action wars like in Star Wars or scary monsters like in Alien films. All the actors/actresses did a brilliant job. Steve Guttenberg and Tahnee Welch looked so beautiful and hot screen couple
Only one artist makes a masterpiece out of everything he creates it's james Horner the only person that brings tears to my eyes with this beautiful song every time and i dont cry at films.
everything James Horner makes... it sounds like everything will be ok, there is no danger or fear after all... well not EVERYTHING he makes but most of it... His music can touch your heart deeply without even trying
Well I would have brought the bluray not to replace the DVD but I'm glad I haven't brought the bluray because I'm against studios using dtsHD when in fact the film was produced mixed and recorded in DOLBY STEREO 6track for 70mm road show release.
I'll keep hold of the DVD in wonderful DOLBY 4.1 as the surrounds are mono as they where mixed intended to be! Two baby boom tracks would have been used for the sub bass and the common LCR as well.
One of my favorite film soundtracks of all time.. so flowing, melodic, relaxing, deep, introspective, thoughtful, sad and happy at the same time..just great!
20 years later, and this theme is still one of the most moving pieces of music I have ever known. It is inspiring, and charming at the same time. What these films meant, to me, is that life and death are not to be feared, they are to be celebrated. Immortality is not living forever. So long as one lived their life, and touched other, then this journey known as living had meaning. Love everlasting, even unto the end of time.
They say if we go with them, we'll live forever. You're my whole life. I wanna go. But if it's a choice of only six more months here with you or living forever all by myself, well I'll take the six more months here with you. I don't want to live forever if you're not going to be with me.
This is a classic film, my father died recently and I have fond memories as a child watching this film with him, the soundtrack is bringing it flooding back and sending a chill up my spine, thanks YouTube!
This was one of the most beautiful, tender movies I have even seen (over 20 years ago). I just watched it again tonight and it was just as beautiful. Now that I'm 20 years older the theme of mortality and life/death has even more meaning!
I wondered about the soundtrack since it seemed familiar. Indeed it was composed by none other than the brilliant James Horner (Casper, etc.).
In sum, a beautiful, tender movie with a perfect soundtrack!
@sniperz77 - I agree. This really is a special movie. People bag the '80's but there was a real sense of wonder and joy in those SF/Fantasy films back then that billions of pixels cannot duplicate. I find myself going back more and more to these treasured films from my youth for their innocence and happiness.
I liked soundtrack, it's better then just fine. So is the movie. It's amazing by itself, and it inspires me as life extensionist too. I would like to have a choice weather I will age and get frailer and die because of it, which is a limit - or, as other option - to stay young indefinitely.

nice movie, I mean, I was 12 when I saw it first on TV, and I like this flick which was basically about geriatrics, doin' what they do best, complaining about being old, and it made it magical and endearing.
This always reminds me of my childhood too. I remember seeing this and the sequel for the first time at my grandparents' house. My grandpa died 14 years ago, but everytime I hear this song and/or see this movie, it brings back great memories of him.....God rest his soul.
