  • Very enjoyable thank you

  • beautiful theme to a lovely film that treats the older generation with respect there was great family films in the eighties.

  • Soundtrack to Home Alone is better!!!!

  • I just hate it when they rip off the score from one move to promote another - in the case of the Super-8 Trailer. Sad.

  • 1:12 to around 2:40... half the emotions known to man are inside it. The better half... If anyone wants to hear another rich string theme in 3/4 from Horner, check out The Ludlows from Legends of the Fall! (if you haven't already heard it)

  • I was reading the comments and all of them are very interesting. But I am with my son when he remind me the scene when Bernie went to the dock to say goodbye his friends; they replied that Rose is dead and there is nothing here. Bernie said: "this is my home". Indeed, mostly of them returned to home, despite all troubles, pain and suffering, we must find the place where peace and love is.

  • Ah yes I knew I'd heard this somewhere before. Super 8 as well.

  • heard the music in glory tried to figure out where I heard it before. I guess its just the James Horner style since I hear the familiarity in all the films he's done

  • So wonderful music and wonderful film !

  • The sequence where the alien died, Brian Dennehy played the part when his character felt the first time ever the feeling of sorrow so well that I'm surprised that he didn't get nominated for an Oscar in that part. I mean to play like you don't know this feeling whereby you do is in my opinion so damn hard and he did it so great and moving that it's a shame that this kind of acting didn't get appreciated in the way it deserved!

  • I'm 13 so obviously I didn't see it when it came out. However one night I couldn't fall asleep so I stayed up and turned on the TV. I put the channel to "This DFW" which plays many movies from the 60's to 80's and sometimes 90's.

    Best. Two. Hours. Ever.

  • super !!

  • Is it daft that I got ridiculously excited about Super 8 almost solely because of this music being on the beginning? I love James Horner; his music just reminds me of my child hood and how magical these movies all were to me. Check out Casper's Lullaby for another piece of his that really makes your spine tingle.

  • @imarockstarme Me too!

  • @imarockstarme yes I agree, casper's lullaby is an awesome song. :)

  • remarkable similar to Land before Time by Horner... Thats no bad thing though i just realised :)

  • @mrconcept He has a style that comes through in all his music and I love it!

  • La magie du 7ème art

  • Great score for this film...probably a bit too good, as the film was entertaining but not really one of the greats of like genre.

  • One of the many things I found interesting about this movie was that the actor Wilford Brimley who played Ben Luckett was in real life only 50 years old when he starred in this movie and yet he was playing someone in his 70's. Whilst the actor Don Ameche who played Art Selwyn was in real life 76 years old when he starred in this movie. It's interesting that in the movie they are playing as old Best Friends yet in real life Don Ameche is old enough to be Wilford Brimley's Father. :D

  • Cocoon,Troy,Titanic,Avatar,The land before time,Zorro,Casper,The perfect storm etc...This man is a prodigy hes legendary! hes one of my top composers number 2 is Hanzs Zimmer and the rest, well it's up to you guys :P

  • SUPER 8

    8D

  • A mix of two other James Horner compositions: Legends of the Fall and Land Before Time. Great composer...but many of his compositions sound so similiar.

  • @bmshaven No different than John Williams, Thomas Newman, Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry; they are all fantastic composers whose scores offer similarities that allow listeners to recognize their work; sounding similar is not a demerit, but more of a trademark.

  • @jojo34209 you forgot michael giacchino who is quickly cementing himself as an extremely impressive and emotional composer

  • @iced327 No, I did not forget him; as good as his scores are, Michael still has ways to go before being in the same league as the others I mentioned.

  • This music on the Super 8 trailer gave me chills. It's one of the main reasons why I wanted to see it.

  • @GreyEarlTea ...and it turns out that music of Cocoon in that preview is probably the best thing about the movie (next to the train crash).

  • God I remember crying when the alien died when I was a little kid...

The part at 1:40 is playing during that scene...so sad...love this movie...

  • I was 11 yrs old when my mom took me to see Coccoon in theaters...even though it was a movie with a bunch of old fogies, I remember it touching my little heart even way back then, James Horner's score had A LOT to do with that I'm sure, very soothing, almost haunting at times! Beautiful!

  • :)

  • Sounds like Legend of the Fall

  • Cocoon was the best mixture of story, family values, life, friendship, humor, adventure, vision, and so many other things. It told the story of the change in our lives as we age (something so many people overlook and therefore don't plan for).

Also, Tahne Welch was terrific as the alien girl. Brian Dennehy was terrific as the alien leader. And all of the elderly cast (including, but not limited to Don Ameche and Wilford Brimley) did an extra special job.

  • Another beautiful film score by James Horner

  • some of cocoon's score is featured in the trailer for super 8, the jj abrams movie

  • @BRm2008 Me and some friends watched this movie today when i also noticed that, i freaked out

  • best horner score next to Aliens

  • What a classic piece of beauty.

  • Super 8 just took this theme to match it for their trailer

  • @XonezIOIzenoX And it works perfectly for the trailer:)

  • I knew I recognised the music in the 'Super 8' trailer from somewhere.

  • @McSuperfly101 yeap, I saw the Super 8 trailer and I recognize the music from somewhere so I've been searching for old spielberg movie trailers until I remembered the music was from cocoon

  • such beautiful music!!!!!! Thank you for posting!!!

  • A few weeks ago I was listening to Class FM and I swear they played this combined with Titanic. Does anyone know if Horner composed a piece where combined the two? I can't remember the name but it was something about the ocean...

  • what is the movie cocoon about

  • @Animelover748 life without death

  • This is possibly one of 'classic' James Horner's most touching scores. Check out Battle Beyond The Stars, Krull for early Horner as well.

  • Amazing and very beautiful movie. Visual effects were brilliant for that time, no wonder the movie won the Oscar. The 80's had some kind and sweet Sci-Fi films - E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Flight of the Navigator and Cocoon of course. I like the fact that it were calm films - not action wars like in Star Wars or scary monsters like in Alien films. All the actors/actresses did a brilliant job. Steve Guttenberg and Tahnee Welch looked so beautiful and hot screen couple

  • Touches the heart, like nothing ive ever experienced....

  • BBRAVO MAESTRO BRAVO!

  • James Horner is a boss

  • I remember watching this movie and get tears on my eyes just listening to the music! :')

  • Take away OsT's, and you have a silent movie. Very silent indeed. Hail to Zimmer, Goldenthal, Horner, Newman, Howard Shore, John Williams!

  • you are right about the 80s......how glum things have become

  • Virtual hug for posting this!

  • Only one artist makes a masterpiece out of everything he creates it's james Horner the only person that brings tears to my eyes with this beautiful song every time and i dont cry at films.

  • James Horner is a Master!~ his movie music makes you feel like your at ....and directing a concert!

  • my favorite music there are long time

  • just watched it again after so so so many years, ron howard make really good family films =)

  • everything James Horner makes... it sounds like everything will be ok, there is no danger or fear after all... well not EVERYTHING he makes but most of it... His music can touch your heart deeply without even trying

  • Well I would have brought the bluray not to replace the DVD but I'm glad I haven't brought the bluray because I'm against studios using dtsHD when in fact the film was produced mixed and recorded in DOLBY STEREO 6track for 70mm road show release.

I'll keep hold of the DVD in wonderful DOLBY 4.1 as the surrounds are mono as they where mixed intended to be! Two baby boom tracks would have been used for the sub bass and the common LCR as well.

The score is a nice touch by James Horner

  • @EmpireLS56KW Im fine with the VHS version

  • @FanaticmusicMatt I might still have the VHS Dolby Stereo PAL tape around still myself and a Dolby Stereo NICAM 725 digital version as well.

  • One of my favorite film soundtracks of all time.. so flowing, melodic, relaxing, deep, introspective, thoughtful, sad and happy at the same time..just great!

  • A 1985 movie which I have treasured and cherished.......

  • A moving piece of music from a great composer!

  • 20 years later, and this theme is still one of the most moving pieces of music I have ever known. It is inspiring, and charming at the same time. What these films meant, to me, is that life and death are not to be feared, they are to be celebrated. Immortality is not living forever. So long as one lived their life, and touched other, then this journey known as living had meaning. Love everlasting, even unto the end of time.

  • And So God Loved Us That He Made Music To What Life Will Throw At Us

  • Just watched both 1 & 2 this weekend, they don't make them like this anymore.

"You see Walter, a man isn't supposed to outlive his kids"

  • Typical of James Horner! Great work! :)

  • Sniper, I would agree totally.

  • They say if we go with them, we'll live forever. You're my whole life. I wanna go. But if it's a choice of only six more months here with you or living forever all by myself, well I'll take the six more months here with you. I don't want to live forever if you're not going to be with me.

    Awesome!

  • oooh I love James horner! **

  • I's the best film from my childhood. This music moves me every time. :)

  • This film is so full of the Grace of God's Gift of Music to us. thank you God, For James Horner

  • This is such a great movie and the music is fantastic it takes u in to the movie love it

  • This is a classic film, my father died recently and I have fond memories as a child watching this film with him, the soundtrack is bringing it flooding back and sending a chill up my spine, thanks YouTube!

  • Thank you for sharing this!! I love both the first movie and the sequel and James Horner does a jam up job! So beautiful!!

  • 映画作品の中で一番好きです。優しさ溢れる暖かい作品です。

  • We must "listen to our ancients and commit to memory their traditions...for it is in their strength and knowledge we replicate, is it not?

  • john c lilly

  • Love this film and soundtrack

  • always a great movie and soundtrack.

  • This was one of the most beautiful, tender movies I have even seen (over 20 years ago). I just watched it again tonight and it was just as beautiful. Now that I'm 20 years older the theme of mortality and life/death has even more meaning!

I wondered about the soundtrack since it seemed familiar. Indeed it was composed by none other than the brilliant James Horner (Casper, etc.).

In sum, a beautiful, tender movie with a perfect soundtrack!

  • @sniperz77 I agree..This and Casper are perfect. This is a great movie. I just love it. Well done Horner and Howard.

  • @sniperz77 - I agree. This really is a special movie. People bag the '80's but there was a real sense of wonder and joy in those SF/Fantasy films back then that billions of pixels cannot duplicate. I find myself going back more and more to these treasured films from my youth for their innocence and happiness.

  • @sniperz77 There was just something about 80s movies/music that was magical, especially the movies. God I love this movie!

  • I like this better than Braveheart personally.

  • Horner's 2nd best score (behind Braveheart)

  • -I hate and love this theme, my grandfather died about the time the this movie came out.......

  • Often, the people who tell others to "give there heads a big shake" are the very people who need to rethink their ways.

  • Oh no god damn it, sorry i was in one of those drunken text moments, My appologies.

  • We ALL have thosemoments from time to time. I don't even know why I left that comment!

  • This is so beautiful fills my heart...

  • Always reminds me of my grandad this theme

  • Horner, you are the best!!!!!

  • our marching band show this year is based around this theme, its so pretty

  • Music that moves the soul............. is there any other way to describe it....

  • When music can bring you to tears.... what else is needed. My soul is well and truly stirred.

  • You're always sure of a good movie soundtrack from James Horner. Star Trek and A Beautiful Mind are some good examples.

  • Does anyone know where i can download this soundtrack i have been looking for it.

  • I liked soundtrack, it's better then just fine. So is the movie. It's amazing by itself, and it inspires me as life extensionist too. I would like to have a choice weather I will age and get frailer and die because of it, which is a limit - or, as other option - to stay young indefinitely.

Those who feel the same way - please donate and support imminst Laser Research Grant.

  • Ha! Nice pitch.

  • We all wish we could live forever but when oir time comes for our soul to disembark we must allow it to. Then we can live on forever.

  • I like it at 2:15

  • one of my faviorate movies of all time. Steve Guttenberg was great as the captain. awesome

  • Just the most Beautifull music that I've ever listen

  • Absolutely Stunning!!!

  • nice movie, I mean, I was 12 when I saw it first on TV, and I like this flick which was basically about geriatrics, doin' what they do best, complaining about being old, and it made it magical and endearing.

    weird, but nice.

  • This always reminds me of my childhood too. I remember seeing this and the sequel for the first time at my grandparents' house. My grandpa died 14 years ago, but everytime I hear this song and/or see this movie, it brings back great memories of him.....God rest his soul. It seems like this song and this movie touched a lot of people born in the mid-70s to early-80s

  • I agree, took my Dad to see this movie, and he loved it. Music is so moving.

  • Also the part around 1:44 I've remembered since I first saw this movie back in 1986 as a 10 year old. I've never forgotten it and I always hear that music in my head when I think of this movie. Awesome.

  • Great song.

Part of the buildup towards the beginning sounds like part of the main them from The Natural, another great piece of music.

  • and also makes me think of my grandpa. i lost him this year. 88 years old and fought in ww11.

  • god hearing this always makes me feel human.

  • I have also LOVED this movie and soundtrack since I was a kid!! Beautiful soundtrack to a magical movie!!! WONDERFUL!!!!!

  • *Words*

  • Wrods can't describe what this music means to me. I've loved this movie since I was a kid. Brings back some tearful memories.

  • This score will always been in my top favorites from Mr. Horner.

  • this music really does bring tears to my eyes. it is that beautiful. thank you for posting this.

  • @movieman311975 I agree. As soon as I heard this music in the film, I was emotionally gripped by the film. Excellent film with one of Horner's best score (only second to Braveheart in my opinion)

  • @movieman311975 Same here. Cocoon is also a very engaging film. Better than that drawn out Out of Africa.

  • Beautiful

  • Brilliant Movie Soundtrack by James Horner.

  • one day i was driving down the road and this song was on npr and i couldn't remember what from but it reminded me of my childhood. I still don't own the cd. Where can I get it? Thank you...this is fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I feel the same!! I have been looking for it myself. They have it on Amazon....pretty expensive.....starts at about 50 bucks!! I am gonna get me one real soon. Well worth the money!!!

  • Oooh, i've got goosebumps, thank you so much dude! It's so relaxing! I've finally found it. One of the best composers with John Williams and Hans Zimmer of course!

  • Comment removed

  • Wonderful :´- | , thanks.

  • thanks for posting, had been hunting a while

  • One of the two best film composers (along w/Hans Zimmer) of the past 25 years, at the top of his composing game with this masterpiece of a cinematic score.

  • hard to find
