So, strike a blow to feminism, and vote for McSame (After all, he got a zero rating from Planned Parenthood!)
The reporter sounds put out that she wasn't allowed to interrupt the conversation Obama was already engaged in. And her question was inane. Obama has stated numerous times that he would push for higher mile per gallon standards and give tax incentives to U.S. automakers to do so. The only way American car companies can survive in these times of high gas prices is to make gas-efficient cars. Honda and Toyota have been for years and look at their sales. The reporter didn't do her homework.
Wow, some people will make a fuss about anything. The 'sweetie' comment doesn't show he is not respecting women. For heavens sake, the man has a wife he obviously loves and respects, as well as two daughters. As a parent saying 'honey' to my husband and three kids multiple times a day, sometimes I find myself calling others it as a reflex. We've all done that. Look at the people who make up his staff, he obviously thinks women are competent or he wouldn't be hiring them for important positions.

If you really were keeping track of the elections MAYBE you'd know that. You are just looking for reasons to be offended.
Like I said, this is media material being out/overplayed as well as taken OUT OF CONTEXT by people LIKE YOU(mainly women) who don't REALLY/FULLY understand the concept of the term.
And what makes you think I haven't been called a nigger-lover? And my kids haven't been called nigger? Careful - you're just generalizing, too.
I've seen this and felt it from both sides - female and of color. And nobody can tell me what my gut knows. My husband can call me that. I call my kids that. My boss or a male coworker cannot call me that. And I know you wouldn't like it either - you'd feel it, too.
I pull up to the drive-in window, and the server calls me sweetie. I like it!! Honey, baby, sugar, etc. Where the Hell are you from that makes this offensive!! I'm from the South baby, and that's the way we talk. Are you serious?? Oh yea, Obama '08 sweetie!" Damn!! Why the Hell are we talking about this junk?? Aren't we blowing 3 billion a week in Iraq? Gas is $4.00 a gal. Our middle classes jobs are in China, but we're talking about flag pins and "sweetie?"
You know, come to think of it, you may be right! Come January 21, 2009 we'll bring our troops home and let those Arabs sort it out themselves. Then gas will be gas will be $1.25 again. And we'll get our respect back around the world.
Guess this is what they always meant by The South Gonna Rise Again!
And our president will be talking just like some guy at a drive-up. And we'll all like it, because he's a uniter not a divider!
Iraq should have never happened. Obama said that it in 2002, before we invaded.
We bailed out Kuwait, and what did that get? $4.00 a gallon gas.
You make the wrong assumption. It's not a guy at the drive-up, it a woman, typically a black woman, calling me, "sweetie," and "baby." Give me the South any day, and if you are a woman, call me "sweetie, and baby" anytime and I'll smile big at cha!!
Everyone's going to be so friendly once he's elected and sets the tone.
Gas hasn't been $4 in the states as it has been in the UK forever.
Lived in Texas for three years - don't recall anyone calling my mixed family 'sweetie' very often down there. Called us a few other names sometimes, though.
Then, i guess that explains why you think the way you do. You're not accustomed to it being a "friendly" term. Up here in Maryland, talk like that is considered playful/friendly as long as the person is either on the same level OR A Man or Woman is addressing a child. Now in Texas......... I don't know what nor why it's SOOOOOO dang offensive if someone (other the one you're married to) says it to you! It's NOT THAT SERIOUS!
& What's with "a black man should know that" thing......... I know what this is about (& deep down inside you do too). This isn't about sex, this is about race. Quit being RACIST and stop calling Obama SEXIST! If he was white, i'll 80-90% of the people making this a spectacle wouldn't have said anything.
You assume that a woman from Liverpool (you think) is white and a married to a white with lily white children. Ooops on you.
And that's like saying only blacks make a big deal of being called a nigger so we should ignore it. Damn straight people know when they are being disrespected. The racist and the sexist say it's 'cute' or 'funny' or 'endearing'. Ask the person who is being name-called. Don't tell us we're being oversensitive. I understand when I'm being disrespected, boy.
NO YOU DON'T! xD. Seriously, no one's accusing you of that. All i'm saying is that you're mis-interpreting the impact of the term "sweetie". Seriously, in comparing the word "sweetie" with "Nigger" and "Boy" in ITSELF is a joke. But i kind of see why you think the way you do. You're not a male and you don't understand that words like "Boy" "BITCH" and "Nigger" aren't even in the same league as "sweetie". They're not even in the same ballpark!
The person who threw it? Or the person who caught it?
I don't have to be called a bitch to be demeaned.
Sweetie = you're cute, you're 'less than', I don't have to take you seriously.
The guys in his party LAUGHED about it and then he never answered the question. That's putting a woman in her place - a small, limited place defined by men.
Like I said, this is media material being out/overplayed as well as taken OUT OF CONTEXT by people (mainly women) who don't REALLY/FULLY understand the concept of the term.
And in case you didn't get the "honey"/"sugar-cake" reference. I was talking about a WOMAN saying that to him (Obama). Now did I make myself clear? (no disrespect).
It was a condescending and sexist comment. It also wasn't the first time he made this mistake. In early April he referred to a female factory worker in Pennsylvania as "sweetie".
The contest for the Democratic nomination isn't over until someone gets 2025 delegates or is nominated in the August convention.
Oh and by the way. I don't think Obama would've had a problem with a "professional" woman calling him "honey" in an professional environment. (As long as it wasn't putting him on the spot). Stop the drama & just vote Obama! Let's just face it. He's the only candidate that makes sense. McCain does too (when it comes to high inflation, gas prices and war costs). xD
You women are overreating (as usual). I'm pretty sure Obama never meant anything disrespectful by his comment. "Sweetie" is something he calls every female he regards well. Furthermore he apologised for the comment. It was on the news yesterday.
It's women voters who support Hillary Clinton who are collectively destroying the democratic party. You people need to get off your high horse like the GoP men did when they realised that they couldn't beat McCain. This nonsense needs to stop.
Would it be viewed as irrelevant if Obama had said something like "Hold on there, sport." to Mike Wallace or Dan Rather?
So how far do you think the issues mattering most to women will be advanced by a man who doesn't even feel the need to respectfully deflect questions from a female reporter he deems to be a pest. Hope you're taking note, women of Oregon, Kentucky, Puerto Rico, Montana and S. Dakota.
Call a professional woman in a professional environment a "sweetie" - ask the EEOC what they think of that! Of course it's discrimination! He's BELITTLING her, being condescending, and of course, once again, not answering tough questions. Not presidential, not befitting of a senator, a lawyer or a mature man!
Imagine if someone would blow him off in a professional setting calling him "boy"!
Don't you mean honey or sugar-pop?????????? Priceless.......... the ridiculous attacks and silly politics focuses its attention on Barack Obama once again..... 1st the "flag pen"; Then the "Re-emergence of Reverend Wright"; And now THIS! These republicans & supporting ads should be ashamed of themselves for this............
What someone says and what you understand it to mean can be two different things. Is every man that calls a woman sweetie sexist, its kinda annoying but usually they mean no harm by it. But I already see your dead-beat against Obama so what people are saying is just going in one ear and coming out the other. Oh well,
Get an education, i'm surprised you are even smart enough to post on Youtube
It matters. Sweetie is a term of endearment and familiarity. Bottom line - he would never refer to a man as sweetie - only a woman or a child. Welcome to our patriarchal, misogynistic society. Go ahead America, just keep giving him a pass. This wasn't his first sexist comment and it won't be his last.
Obama answered these automotive questions in his speech in Grand Rapids. Clearly, Obama was too occupied to answer the reporters question.
Obama has always supported the working class, while McCain argues for tax cuts for the rich and McCain says Bush's economy is fine.
This video is a blatant misrepresentation of the imagery and context of the situation. The reporter should be fired, or get a job at Fox News where she would fit right in.
The edited out response to her question from Obama:
"What we've had is a lot of the past. I am for the future. I will help these people by changing the system, and giving them hope. That is what they need. Hope they can be proud of, and change they can believe in."
"What we've had is a lot of the past. I am for the future. I will help these people by changing the system, and giving them hope."
Wow, great with the slogans. You're really naive and ignorant of life. A perfect example of a kid who has been desensitized by the Media, the world of pop culture to "think and believe" that this isn't sexist or degrading-- that it's OK to be minimized. Too many naive little sweeties don't have a clue what's going on and want to change the world! What a JOKE!
2) Obama addressed these automotive issues in a speech in Grand Rapids Michigan
3) This video is bias propaganda, purposely misrepresenting Obama. Everyone knows Obama supports an economy for the working class, while McCain supports tax cuts for the rich and McCain SAYS Bush's economy is "perfectly fine"
I hope this reporter gets fired for her misrepresentation of imagery and blatant proapaganda.
Obama is a congenial type of guy that likes to put his arm around folks and speak to even confrontational individuals with a friendly tone (which was happening here); hence the term "sweetie". That's probably something he affectionately calls his female family members.
To pretend he meant it in a derogatory fashion is cynicism in the extreme.
"boy" to a black man is a term a racist uses to let him know he thinks he is less than a man. BIG difference!
Actually in the midewest and the south, whites and blacks call each-other boy all the time without incident. It's pretty much like the word 'dude' in California. Only a city slicker intellectual that assumes that would have said that.
Obama just wants to get into the white house and bring real chance for the corporations he represents. He has no plan besides chasing some skirt.
Bull! ... NO black man likes being called boy, not by a white man! That came from Masters calling their male slaves 'boy'. Don't anybody believe that bull!
I agree! BOY is as insulting to a black man as SWEETIE is to any professional woman! TOTENKRAY doesn't understand even the basics of implied racism & sexism in the english language. Obama is condescending and sexist to boot. It p's me off to think that I might be forced to vote for him just because I don't want MCCAIN in office!
ginabrant my little sweety apple pie darling sugar cake cup flower pettle you have a lot to learn in the world that is...why are people like you are so hyper sensitive if you wanna make a change that is or be a part of something or make a difference stop all your negativity ...so your parents have never called u sweetie does that make them sexist does that make me mabye has i started to write this text in all my honesty im just trying to be warm to a fellow human being .i was .you see the point
He - a lawyer who is supposed to understand discrimination, supposedly wants to bring people together - has to learn this NOW? Isn't he a bit too old and well educated for this to finally dawn on him NOW? or is it simply his attitude. The apology was "damage control", not sincere.
you mean you still don't see how/why this argument about Barack being "misogynist" is stupid????? The term "sweetie", isn't NEARLY as damaging as calling a man "boy". Calling a woman a "bitch" is on the same level as referring to a man as a "boy". (that's just real life talk). Calling a woman "sweetie" is just like calling a man "honey" (or sugar-cakes, whatever). And where exactly this lines up with "discrimination".......... I don't think i'll ever know why nor how.....
He is a constitutional law professor - that's why he should understand the law about it. He supposedly can teach all about EEOC, etc. and if any other man in the workplace did this, he'd have his ass handed to him.
And does he really call male reporters 'honey'? Or sugar-cakes? Which male reporter has he addressed that way?
He doesn't view a woman and a man doing the same job the same way. Why would he call a female factory worker sweetie? Would he do that to a male factory worker?
In the real world - NOT HOME, you don't, you CANNOT call a woman cop, doctor, lawyer, teacher, a woman ANYTHING who is doing a job anything but her name. IT'S CALLED DISCRIMINATION. A black man should know that.
Once again: Why would Obama (a man) call another MAN "sweetie"? He's not bi-sexual, neither is he GAY. He has a wife and a few children. "Sweetie" is a FRIENDLY term usually exchanged between MEN AND WOMEN on the same level. You all treat and talk about Obama as if he's a kid! It's almost like the wrong person is playing the victim here.
easy to understand: Calling a grown woman "sweetie" trivializes her. Think about it: if you were applying for a job and you spoke to CEO who just happened to be a woman, would you call her sweetie? Calling her "sweetie" also implies she is something to be "had"; something "sweet". It's out of place in any professional atmosphere. Obama trivialized her in front of a group of men (you hear their laughter) and didn't answer her question. He's sexist.
Rofl :) Watching americas presidential runs is better than any soap opera. You guys pounce at anything and contort/distort everything to create issues. Its unbelievable, but hilarious.
I find this commentary fascinating. When Geoff Davis called Obama "a boy" in early April Obama campaign spokesman, Bill Burton (and MANY of you), said Davis was being "condescending and [engaging in a]personal attack." Now that Obama has used a word that connotes sexist thinking everyone expects us to jump on the bandwagon that says "hey...its just a word...what's the big deal...why all the fuss?" You Obamabots are truly hypocrites. Sexism is NOT a lesser evil than RACISM...or ageism...or
this is a totally sexist comment. It has no place in this election. I am sure if McCain referred to Obama as "boy" the Obamaniacs would flood the streets. In fact, they should. There is no place for these negative stereotypes, whether they be racist or sexist. I expect more of the candidate I voted for...I wish I could have my vote back.
you would take back you vote just cause he said the word 'sweetie'.People like you are why Bush was elected not ONCE mine you, but TWICE! Find better reasons to back or not back you canidate. Thats some BS
Ooooooh big deal... I have a habit of saying "hon" to people, when you use a word a lot for your family sometimes it makes that slip with others. You're a moron, better luck next time trying to swift boat Obama!
haha, of all the things used to take obama down this has got to be the dumbest. i love how she was like "this sweetie didn't get an answer" as if he were dodging the question or something. as if obama doesn't care about auto workers. sweetie, chill the fuck out. oh and he apologized by the way...
This happens all the time when people are in a rush.
He said, "Hold on, I want sweet tea"
He didn't mean "sweetie". He was just speaking at a rapid rate, and his words were jumbled. He even invited her by saying, "We can discuss your concerns later over sweet tea."
Sweetie sounded like a young kid.

JOHN MCSAME, Man of Character:
*Stated Janet Reno was Chelsea Clinton's father (because she was so "ugly").
* Made no objection to the word "Bitch," when a supporter at a town hall meeting used the term in reference to Hillary Clinton.
*Left Carol McCain for the younger and richer "trophy wife," Cindy.
*Once called Cindy a trollop and a cunt, right in front of reporters (makes you wonder what he says behind closed doors).

If you really were keeping track of the elections MAYBE you'd know that. You are just looking for reasons to be offended.

And I know you wouldn't like it either - you'd feel it, too.
liverpoolishgirl 3 years ago
I pull up to the drive-in window, and the server calls me sweetie. I like it!! Honey, baby, sugar, etc. Where the Hell are you from that makes this offensive!! I'm from the South baby, and that's the way we talk. Are you serious?? Oh yea, Obama '08 sweetie!" Damn!! Why the Hell are we talking about this junk?? Aren't we blowing 3 billion a week in Iraq? Gas is $4.00 a gal. Our middle classes jobs are in China, but we're talking about flag pins and "sweetie?"
rickytoney 3 years ago
You know, come to think of it, you may be right! Come January 21, 2009 we'll bring our troops home and let those Arabs sort it out themselves. Then gas will be gas will be $1.25 again. And we'll get our respect back around the world.
Guess this is what they always meant by The South Gonna Rise Again!
And our president will be talking just like some guy at a drive-up. And we'll all like it, because he's a uniter not a divider!
liverpoolishgirl 3 years ago
You are funny.
Iraq should have never happened. Obama said that it in 2002, before we invaded.
We bailed out Kuwait, and what did that get? $4.00 a gallon gas.
You make the wrong assumption. It's not a guy at the drive-up, it a woman, typically a black woman, calling me, "sweetie," and "baby." Give me the South any day, and if you are a woman, call me "sweetie, and baby" anytime and I'll smile big at cha!!
rickytoney 3 years ago
That's so good.
Everyone's going to be so friendly once he's elected and sets the tone.
Gas hasn't been $4 in the states as it has been in the UK forever.
Lived in Texas for three years - don't recall anyone calling my mixed family 'sweetie' very often down there. Called us a few other names sometimes, though.
liverpoolishgirl 3 years ago
Then, i guess that explains why you think the way you do. You're not accustomed to it being a "friendly" term. Up here in Maryland, talk like that is considered playful/friendly as long as the person is either on the same level OR A Man or Woman is addressing a child. Now in Texas......... I don't know what nor why it's SOOOOOO dang offensive if someone (other the one you're married to) says it to you! It's NOT THAT SERIOUS!
MasterD134 3 years ago
& What's with "a black man should know that" thing......... I know what this is about (& deep down inside you do too). This isn't about sex, this is about race. Quit being RACIST and stop calling Obama SEXIST! If he was white, i'll 80-90% of the people making this a spectacle wouldn't have said anything.
MasterD134 3 years ago
You assume that a woman from Liverpool (you think) is white and a married to a white with lily white children. Ooops on you.
And that's like saying only blacks make a big deal of being called a nigger so we should ignore it. Damn straight people know when they are being disrespected. The racist and the sexist say it's 'cute' or 'funny' or 'endearing'. Ask the person who is being name-called. Don't tell us we're being oversensitive. I understand when I'm being disrespected, boy.
liverpoolishgirl 3 years ago
NO YOU DON'T! xD. Seriously, no one's accusing you of that. All i'm saying is that you're mis-interpreting the impact of the term "sweetie". Seriously, in comparing the word "sweetie" with "Nigger" and "Boy" in ITSELF is a joke. But i kind of see why you think the way you do. You're not a male and you don't understand that words like "Boy" "BITCH" and "Nigger" aren't even in the same league as "sweetie". They're not even in the same ballpark!
MasterD134 3 years ago
Who misinterprets the impact of a punch?
Who feels it more?
The person who threw it? Or the person who caught it?
I don't have to be called a bitch to be demeaned.
Sweetie = you're cute, you're 'less than', I don't have to take you seriously.
The guys in his party LAUGHED about it and then he never answered the question. That's putting a woman in her place - a small, limited place defined by men.

True, some words can never be a term of endearment, but 'sweetie' can, and in my opinion always has been.

McCain does too (when it comes to high inflation, gas prices and war costs). xD
MasterD134 3 years ago
The drama?
That's rich.
liverpoolishgirl 3 years ago 2
You women are overreating (as usual). I'm pretty sure Obama never meant anything disrespectful by his comment. "Sweetie" is something he calls every female he regards well. Furthermore he apologised for the comment. It was on the news yesterday.
It's women voters who support Hillary Clinton who are collectively destroying the democratic party. You people need to get off your high horse like the GoP men did when they realised that they couldn't beat McCain. This nonsense needs to stop.
XJ471 3 years ago

Imagine if someone would blow him off in a professional setting calling him "boy"!
cathanimator 3 years ago
Don't you mean honey or sugar-pop?????????? Priceless.......... the ridiculous attacks and silly politics focuses its attention on Barack Obama once again..... 1st the "flag pen"; Then the "Re-emergence of Reverend Wright"; And now THIS! These republicans & supporting ads should be ashamed of themselves for this............
MasterD134 3 years ago
He's not belittling her, its all in your head!
What someone says and what you understand it to mean can be two different things. Is every man that calls a woman sweetie sexist, its kinda annoying but usually they mean no harm by it. But I already see your dead-beat against Obama so what people are saying is just going in one ear and coming out the other. Oh well,
Get an education, i'm surprised you are even smart enough to post on Youtube
singsanglee 3 years ago

This video is OUTDATED

What a JOKE!
gingrmac 3 years ago 2
1) Sweetie is common terminology

Amazing!
Violinaire1 3 years ago
Actually in the midewest and the south, whites and blacks call each-other boy all the time without incident. It's pretty much like the word 'dude' in California. Only a city slicker intellectual that assumes that would have said that.
Obama just wants to get into the white house and bring real chance for the corporations he represents. He has no plan besides chasing some skirt.
totenkray 3 years ago
Bull! ... NO black man likes being called boy, not by a white man! That came from Masters calling their male slaves 'boy'. Don't anybody believe that bull!
Violinaire1 3 years ago

The reporter later said that she wasn't offended by the sweetie remark, but the fact she never got her answer.
She also said she was very appreciative and surprised to hear Obama's message on her voicemail soon after.
I think it was a very poor choice of words by the senator, and that he certainly learned a valuable lesson.
But equating it to calling a black man "boy" is outlandish in my opinion.
Let's not overreact.
eonstot 3 years ago
He - a lawyer who is supposed to understand discrimination, supposedly wants to bring people together - has to learn this NOW? Isn't he a bit too old and well educated for this to finally dawn on him NOW? or is it simply his attitude. The apology was "damage control", not sincere.
cathanimator 3 years ago 3
you mean you still don't see how/why this argument about Barack being "misogynist" is stupid????? The term "sweetie", isn't NEARLY as damaging as calling a man "boy". Calling a woman a "bitch" is on the same level as referring to a man as a "boy". (that's just real life talk). Calling a woman "sweetie" is just like calling a man "honey" (or sugar-cakes, whatever). And where exactly this lines up with "discrimination".......... I don't think i'll ever know why nor how.....
MasterD134 3 years ago
He is a constitutional law professor - that's why he should understand the law about it. He supposedly can teach all about EEOC, etc. and if any other man in the workplace did this, he'd have his ass handed to him.
And does he really call male reporters 'honey'? Or sugar-cakes? Which male reporter has he addressed that way?
liverpoolishgirl 3 years ago 2
Are you kiddin me????????? Obama's NOT gay! Why WOULD he call another man "sweetie" or "honey"?????????? Think about what youre saying..........
MasterD134 3 years ago
Think about what YOU'RE saying.
It's not about sex; it's about respect.
Which male reporters has hecalled sweetie? None.
A black man should know that.
liverpoolishgirl 3 years ago
Once again: Why would Obama (a man) call another MAN "sweetie"? He's not bi-sexual, neither is he GAY. He has a wife and a few children. "Sweetie" is a FRIENDLY term usually exchanged between MEN AND WOMEN on the same level. You all treat and talk about Obama as if he's a kid! It's almost like the wrong person is playing the victim here.
MasterD134 3 years ago
easy to understand: Calling a grown woman "sweetie" trivializes her.

This happens all the time when people are in a rush.
He said, "Hold on, I want sweet tea"
He didn't mean "sweetie". He was just speaking at a rapid rate, and his words were jumbled. He even invited her by saying, "We can discuss your concerns later over sweet tea."
See, he isn't such a bad guy.
