harleys have always been about big engine and big power, they are super easy to tune and add upgrades too. i have seen 88 cu. in. bored to 95 cu. in. with ported and polished heads, light weight pistons, cams, high flow intake and exahust make 114 ft lbs of torque and 120 hp. take a 883 sporty and put 1200 pistions and jugs on with buell heads, sreamin eagle cams, high flow intake and exaust and they make over 100 hp.
dude, light to light the harley will whip your ass, no sport bike will ever have the off the line torque of a harley. only once you get into the high rpms will you pass him.

the hottest thing right now is a 114 cu in with a supercharger. ported and polished heads, high flow intake and exahust, and cams. they are pushin 130 ft lbs of torque with over 150 hp.
how long is your drag strip? 1/4 mile is the standard so you might want to invest in a gigantic rear sprocket if you ever want to even dream of having the torque to keep up.
My 1995 FXDS has the rev limiter set to 7500. It'll hit that with no problem. Top speed I've attained was 137 mph, according to my GPS. I've done a lot of head work and other mods, including a 2-1 exhaust. On the dyno: 98 HP/113 ft lbs of torque. All this from an 80 incher. Ya just have to know how to build an engine and tune it. I've been building H-Ds for almost 30 years and can squeeze out every bit of power it can make. It's fun pulling away from new Stage 2 Twincams with an Evo!
Here's some of what I've done: Shaved heads for 10.75:1 compression, ported and flowed; Woods W6H cam; S&S valve springs w/ titanium collars; Black Diamond valves (stock diameter); Dyna 2000i ignition w/ custom adv. curve; S&S Super E carb, Tuned V&H 2-1 Pro-Pipe, homemade 2-piece version of Carlini Torque Arm (for easy cam changes), I made from 6061 Aluminum. Various other aluminum parts I've made in my machine shop to lighten the bike. Also, a few other mods I won't mention... my secrets. :)
my 05 buell lighting will turn 7000rpm, and gets an average of 47-48mpg, my best being 52mpg - all stock except for a thrush glasspack. has run a best of 7.92@ 88mph in the 1/8

and as for you having the only harley at 7400rpm
try again me an my dad built a 1998 sportster last winter wit keith black pistons moderade head work (buell xb heads) 150# valve springs
ballanced and blueprinted running an old webber 2 barrel side draft carb (395cfm) and custom cams
it made 109whp and revved to 8100rpm (max power was at 7900rpm but power didn't fall off verry much at the max 8100rpm)
also as for low revs it make 93ft-lbs at 6200rpm and more than 70ft-lbs from 3000rpm to 7100rpm
