Miguel you could play bass in front of 50,000 people. this is immaculate. too ! oh the fuzzy bass part is too much fuzzy, but you can't control everything, specially with this media. thank you for this pleasure : it is close to the edge : the feeling of watching master Chris recording this title song is wonderful. thanx brother Miguel !
Does ANYONE know where I can find this tabbed out correctly? Ultimate guitar, songster, all the other big tab sites have most of it wrong. This is an immaculate bass cover in my opinion. Great job.
Unlikely that Chris Squire will leave Yes, but should that happen, they should turn to you, man! As they did with Benoit David. Greetings from an Argentinian.
Hey amazing cover dude! Is this how Chris plays it? I'm trying to learn this song on the bass but i cant find any good tabs that sound right and im bad at learning from ear so im gonna use your vid! thx man
This is really awesome. Being able to figure out (!!!!) and play these complicated basslines, is like listening to Bach's Künst der Füge and then play it. You are a genius. Thanks for sharing your efforts. Please continue. By the way, I'm a bassist as well :)
@jetkitebo Actually, I've seen that before....its a Chris Squire Signature model....I'm not sure exactly what year its from, but if you look at the interview he did with Star Licks (should be able to find it quickly on youtube), you can see about middle of the way in the interview he talks about the signature model....The signature looks the same, thats why I'm guessing it is...
Miguel, I know you covered the live version of "Gates of Delirium" in another vid, which as you know is more challenging than the studio version. Same applies here; on the live version of "CTTE" from Yessongs Squire is doing all kinds of extra crazy stuff that's not on the studio version. I'd be interested in seeing you tackle *that*! :-)
@redsox021384 I work with some bands, right now I play in a kind of punk-rock band :)) And also worked with another band, i uploaded a clip with some songs from it. Thanks again!
@jetsrush01 Having some kind of tube amp (or emulator/plugin) will help a lot, like I did with the sansamp here. The strings should be as fresh as possible. I have to make one clip dedicated to these questions but still didn't find the time :)
@athrilled1 Hi! I have taken the notes by ear, for now there is no sheet music for this one, although I have some made and I put them on miguelbass..com
fantastic work...I liked the most your attitude I mean you're really into this you really enjoy what is most important in my opinion. Great job! imagine while you play Chris sang also...it's like supernatural!
Funny thing is...I just put this cd into my car player today and listened to it while out driving today. I had the song in my head when i came home and Youtubed it only to come across this masterpiece. Wonderful job!!!! You're a great talent. I'll have this earworm in my head allllllll day now.. lol
Of course, this is difficult to play... but I guess it shows what a musical genius Chris Squire really is to have **CREATED** a sick bassline like this one !!
@Skraboing649 hay bro, i had some friends over to watch a football game and one of my dumbass friends went on my computer and sent a bunch of e-mails and left posts all over the internet.i have spent half a day writing apologys to people from all over the planet,im sorry it ever happened .i think you are fantastic, once again im very sorry rock on david
hearing the bassline in the foreground like this just shows how unbelievable chrsi squire is, not only is he playing this unpredictable off beat bassline he is singing harmonies that are far from easy
Hey Miguel, do you know anything about that 50's style p bass that Chris used on YES and Time and a word. It had a second pick up installed to look like a ricky. I've been tying to find info on it but it seems to be difficult to find
@4stringsoFURY I don't have so many info on that bass unless that it was stolen at some point. I am sure that the people at Rickresource forum know better than me so I suggest you consult that forum and maybe subscribe. It's a very nice place with very interesting subjects - they have a section devoted to Yes/Chris. Hope this helps!
@lifeseeker1 I'm not so into Led Zep's playing - doesn't mean I don't like it. I would like to have a try but time now is short... (I would like to do more of my own songs like this last one). I will take a listen anyway cause I was curious to hear it with attention after your description. Thanks!
I've been working on learning this song, and for some weird reason this lick is giving me the most trouble. I don't know what it is about it, but I just cannot get the timing down right.
OMG - You are amazing. It makes me appreciate the music I grew up listening to even more. Have you ever done any Jack Cassidy licks off of early Jefferson Airplane? I'd love to watch you play "Other Side of This Life" or "It's No Secret" off of "Bless It's Pointed Little Head"... probably some of the most amazing bass lines on the planet... pretty please?
@chrislower Hello, I heard some of the work from Jack Cassidy with David Crosby and I really liked it. I surely can relate to his playing, so melodic. Thanks for the input!
The one person who disliked this video is clearly deaf. Miguel, I first saw you play on your cover of Roundabout, and I was blown away. You are an inspiration to a beginner bassist like myself. 10/10!
You know what's great about this? Not only is his bass playing great, but the comments are positive. I always expect to see people cussing each other out.. Miguel you have brought peace to our bass playing planet.
Now...for learning Chris' harmony parts on "A seasoned witch..." while playing that line.
@alstrand Thank you very much - Yes I like the fact that people here tend to look always on the plus side., with interesting topics... So thank you all :)
That was great. I love your attention to detail. I'd like to see you play the bass from Perpetual Change like they did on Yessongs, especially the middle part. I think thats one of the fastest bass lines Chris Squire plays.
@SiberianMan2u Yes it's really fast - I remember that I tried to play that passage long ago but it's hard to do it many times like he does and with so much ease!
Not only note perfect (from what I heard anyway) but great so see so much passion and feel for the song which lots of bassists on here lack.
I would love to get this song down, but i just dont have the patience to work it all out and have trouble remembering it all. I dont think its technically too hard, but some of the rhythms are so complex i cant even conceive how squire even thought of them!
That is a beautiful bass, how much did u get it for may i ask?
@anameofsomesort Hi and thanks for watching and commenting! At the time it wasn't that expensive - about 1000 GBP back in 96. That was their initial list price.
I begging someone out there to do an accurate tab and lesson for Steve Howe's guitar up until the singing begins! I also love the first guitar break. I'm aware that there is a video of Steve playing the main theme which begins a few minutes in, I want the more free form part before it. The tabs I've found on the internet aren't that good.
BTW: Great job as ever Miguel! Do ever fantasize that Chris gets a cold and you have to fill in on tour?
Hi Miguel you really nailed that. Chris Squire also used a distortion unit on that album just the give the bass a bit more growl. Have you had a shot at sound chaser yet.
@williamgatkinson hello William. Sound Chaser is still on hold... I really can't play it right now with that much detail. Let's wait and see. Thank you very much.
I saw Yes play recently in Manchester UK, was transfixed by Chris Squire throughout the show, your playing is indeed immaculate well done mate I'm WELL impressed!
I was always curious about something: how did Squire develop his unique "Bach/Baroque" sound on his bass? Was it the bass he use, because I know Rickenbackers have their distinct sounds.
@XanaduUchiha Probably many factors involved, one of them being the fact that Chris sang in a church choir and that should have given him a taste for harmony and counterpoint. Thanks for writing!
Absolutely wonderful - I just began trying to learn this piece and it's tough!! Do you have any transcription or tab available for this (or any other piece that you have perfected)?
@cmclark123 Thanks - btw I have the transcriptions, only those made by me, and I made clips here with those. I'll put them in my site as soon as possible. (not CttE though).
@XanaduUchiha I agree those albums are among the most "showcasing" as Chris' bass playing is concerned. Although I like others in it's own way, those ones marked an era.
if you don't mind me asking, but when you play the riff at the beginning of the song (the ascending arpeggio) what is the fingering you are doing on the fret board? I have been trying to master that part of the song forever
Great work on a classic! I wonder if Chris still remembers and plays it the exact same as he did then. But then, all that's not so important. You have the right attitude, to want to match it as closely as you are able, and you do so with all due respect for the music. At least I see nothing sniping here. All I see and hear is pure class! Good job!
@Awwa1 Good point. It takes some memory effort. In classical music you would have a score. Anyway it takes a specific work for memorizing, if you don't play it regularly. Thanks for your kind comments. Miguel

@cmclark123 Thanks - btw I have the transcriptions, only those made by me, and I made clips here with those. I'll put them in my site as soon as possible. (not CttE though).

Chris Squire is one of my favorite bassists.... and many of the songs from Fragile and Close To The Edge showcases Squire's amazing skills.

I have been trying to master that part of the song forever
jcelephant68 1 year ago
@jcelephant68 i'll have to go back to the bass again to remember the fingering. I guess I better do a clip just with that part

Good job!
Peace,

@Awwa1 Good point. It takes some memory effort. In classical music you would have a score. Anyway it takes a specific work for memorizing, if you don't play it regularly. Thanks for your kind comments. Miguel
