Aikido always reminds me of tai chi principles (ebb and flow, give and take, using your opponent's momentum against them) applied to judo practice (throws, trips, and submissions). Is that a fair pronouncement?

I think you have missed the whole point of why we train?
It's the practitioner...not the art!
Look at the genesis of where these arts came from...yes some are watered down so they may be used as sport (Not Aikido though.) but they were very deadly combatives from the start..I cannot say the same for MMA.
There are several Traditionalists who now dominate the sport!
would you defeat an individual with your body energy and not touching your oponnent!!! that's BULLSHIT! and yes im not a qualified ranked up critic!!!
and im not talking about the genesis of martial arts or anything aikido revolves around pure body concentration, but the fact that you can't defeat an enemy in a hand to hand combat without even touching him/her makes it like " pfff" that's inpossible!!!
don't make the second step before the 1st - once one has MASTERED his art, he can drop any concept of it... before that, you have to use techniques and you HAVE TO fight ... you can only let go what you really have achieved. no philosophy in here - it's practical - but you can't judge what you haven't tried, that's what fucks me up with some comments... and not only me 4 sure
Listen to the explaination of Akido, as the way of peace from its great-practicioners, that-is the evidence based proof, of the art's departure from survival-skills. In terms of sport, minimal damage to all of the involved people, will convert Akido into the idealized sport.
i beleive you could beat an opponent without ever touching them, if you move and are able to dodge every attack thrown at you your opponent will eventually tire and will not even be able to lift his/her arms and im sure they will give because their efforts are futile and they would be completely demorolized. You can beat someone mentally before you can physically. i hope this makes sense because i am in no way an expert in anything just giving my opinion
wow you're right how did you know? oh wait it seems pretty obvious isn't it? how in the world will you defeat somebody in a hand to hand combat without tuching your oponnent? ussing ur pure body energy and the so called " body inpulses"
yeah, guess you got it... it's about awareness of the whole situation, including your "opponents" impulses and their direction, his body tonus (meaning the tension createt by the mind)
the soft and weak may overcome the hard, victory is generated by holding yourself back. this puts the meaning of power in a whole new context..
ueshiba said you ought to make room for your opponent in your heart by non-violent behavior and non-fighting, non-resisting... in the end, it's indeed about an empty mind
the whole point of martial arts is they are defencive and controled, so when defending yourslef and others there no need to harm the attacker or any one eles that would be harmed without the skill. if you go to one akido lession this will be the first thing any good teacher will say.

I can not understand why people think some methods that used to hurt each other as ways of life or way to enlightenment. No one feel good when hurting others because more or less that person also got hurt.
If hurting can bring to enlightenment then very much like we are living in hell.
different forms of meditation are found in all religion. zen is the practice of meditation alone, without the religion. to have the ability to focus ones mind on a single task. you can get the same achievement of meditation by being placed in a isolation chamber for several hours. zen is not a spiritual ritual, although it can be used for that. so enlightenment can mean different things to different practitioners of zen.
It's not about hurting others, it's how to protect oneself and others from being hurt. If you want to understand this, read such classics as The Unfettered Mind, The Book of Five Rings or Hagakure. If you cannot understand this then The Way is obviously beyond your capabilities.
Hurting does bring enlightenment...Exercise hurts your muscles, but they become better afterwards...so apply that to everything...studying hurts the brain...but you get better afterwards...Getting beat up hurts, but you become more resistant....if you get hurt enough, your brain releases endorphins which heightens your abilities....though yes it doesn't feel good at first, you learn to develop a resistant to that too, learn to like pain...but in in an exaggerate way, just me though...
Empty mind, that in itself is beautiful. as far as i can say, empty mind sums it up. its a fantastic feeling, like a cool spring breeze, peace, like making love but not as intense, and always their. lol you see what i mean, its complex, but empty mind sums it up perfectly! oh btw nice vid.
Close your eyes and count to 60, open and say the name of the person you want to be with forever... Say his or her name 10 times then say yours 3 times... This up coming Friday your dream guy or girl will come up to you or call you or tell you when to call him or her and say 'I want to be with you forever...' It works, trust me... Post this in 5 videos or this will never happen...
Nice video, but are you actually allowed to use one arm to swing in Kendo? I'm referring to 1:18 where the guy goes crazy. Can anybody clarify for me please?
We do not say Aikido is different from other martial arts in this respect - but Aikido is special in that it was born out of the founders wish that his martial arts practice should be a path to spirituality. Martial arts like karate sprang from a need to defend one's self without weapons - yet through daily practice a student will develop their spiritual character.
People who say Aikido work In a real fight Is people who have no combat experience what so ever. In reality a simple twist on the wrist won't throw a guy that Is bigger than 110 pounds around. I respect real martial artist's and not this. If you are offended by this then It Is time you face the truth or prove otherwise.
@TylerDurdenK7 And people who talk shit about other martial arts is because he/she has never went to that style's dojo and tried it out for themselves. A simple wrist twist will not throw a person that stands still only make the person kneel or go down to the ground to alleviate the pain in the wrist, but if said person is moving sufficiently fast in any direction and then loses balance, then even a small wrist twist or a light push is enough to make even the largest man fall, simple physics.
Aikido is a beautiful art form, but it is NOT usable in Martial combat. I find it sad that people actually practice this art form as a means of self-protection. You might as well practice ball-room dancing as a martial art, both use soft, circling movements, both arts control your opponent by the hand/wrist, and both require a weak opponent. You're right man, its a joke!
@unbecome What do you mean by "Martial combat"? Aikido is the martial art that was chosen as mandatory for all Japanese riot police and all female police officers. Do you think it was chosen because it was so ineffective? Aikido, like all martial arts, is only as good as the practitioner. There are bad Aikidoka and bad teachers of Aikido. Perhaps watch this for a little insight: /watch?v=rs4gTZjSqJc
Hi everyone - these are clips from the same movie I made, The Empty Mind. It's available on DVD. It features 7 major martial arts and the top masters of that art - and I do mean top, the best in the world. We mostly shot the film in China and Japan through all of 2003-4.
I will be posting clips from most martial arts we shoot - for example, we just completed filming the world's top Japanese swordmaster (Iaido). See you soon, Empty Mind Films.
Id rather full mind...
