  • he looks like meatloaf hehe

  • at the beginning take a close look at the guitarist's headstock on his guitar im not sure but I think he has a small pic of Michael Myers from Halloween

  • 0:23,

    totally!

  • To the people saying he held it in and never really hit the high notes on this song, that's because there's different versions of performing this song life. They chose to go soft and mellow for a small setting on Kimmel. It's actually nice to see the lead singer not being all about going hard and rocking out.....he did this song perfectly and it's pretty refreshing.

    Shinedown rocks!!

  • whats that the thing the guitarist uses in the intro

  • It's called an Ebow. Cool little device.

  • drink some damn water or something.

I hope he can sing when i see them Feb. 3rd

  • heh yeah he didnt hit quite as many of the high notes this time around. still good live performance though.

  • Why did he get so fat damn

  • @ErockerG He's not THAT fat.

  • great band, great song but brent sounds a little winded trying to sing this song live

  • I've wanted to see their concert live for three years now. Most people I know love their shows. Everybody feels under the weather every now and then.

  • I've seen them in concert a few times. They are pretty good. The only prob i had with them wasn't really their fault. one of their concerts was in a small theater. The accoustics were bad and you could hear his vocals at all. But like I said, not shinedowns fault the venue was lousy. They always put on a great show!!!

  • look at the faggot chewing the gum when jimmy kimmel is introducing them LOL

  • ohhh fuck thank for pointing that out. i needed that laugh!!!! ROFLMAO

  • @Gr33ksoldi3r lmao

  • lolololol

  • @Gr33ksoldi3r yup and that faggot ass smile on his face

  • He prob can"t pull off the high notes the way he would like "live"...still a great job though..

  • @Jmastanaru Agreed. Brent sounds terrible in this video. Not one of their best.

  • Sounds great but damn.. Hes got a crazy good voice but he kept it in the whole time. I was waiting for him to blast those high notes.

  • Wow the one guitarist I hear in that solo is Jimmy Page, what a talented band they are and what a performance!!

  • Shinedown fans unite XD

  • great song - its cool how the bass guy changes guitars

  • he keeps moving his microphone to change his voice....-_-

  • horrrible live.. but good song

  • i dont like it when he wears suits...he looked ugly in the video, but hes such a georgous guy!....and they rock live!!!

  • This is why I HATE LIVE singing. :(

  • how can THAT be a good thing?

if a band cant perform live that just means that they suck.

dont get me wrong, i love shinedown. this just isnt one of their best performances.

  • I don't remember me saying this was a good performance. I think you replied too the wrong Person, Buddy.

  • i was replying to the fact that you said you hate live performances.

That last part was just something i added on to make the second line of my comment not look like i was trashing shinedown. sorry for the confusion.

  • But you said "How can THAT be a good thing?" I don't like Live singing, I don't care who it's from. It just completely sucks ass. The only reason I listened too this is because I can't seem too find a "Not live song" from them. =|

  • I was basically saying that if a band doesn't sound good live, they're shit. If the singer can't get more or less the same sound live as on the record that means that it is all mixing and he/she can't really sing.

  • Lmfao. I hadda read that like 98382 times. Haha, okay I get it now. :)

  • i like the song!

really though, not the BEST live.

    but they are OKAY!

  • was the guitarist using one of those string vibrator things at the beginning?

  • It's sucks how he has to half-ass the vocals live because he puts too many effects on them in the studio...

  • Looks like the same suit he's wearing in the OFFICIAL VIDEO of this song.

  • wow...they suck live...

  • Atleast he looks good in a suit. Classy. He didn't come on stage with some 10 sizes too big retarded football jersey... like dem gangsta lean rappers!

  • fuckin amazing live performance...99.9% similar to studio version

  • have you ever heard the cd version? lol

  • I think they sound great! Diversity in a performance makes it interesting people!!!Get a grip

  • Comment removed

  • WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Okay, I've watched Shinedown live ALOT. Ive heard Brent sing live.. ALOT. This isnt his usual setting, and he's not usually wearing a suit. This isnt something he does often. /: Maybe it's the setting? Maybe it's the being on this show? I dont know, Brent Smith CAN sing. Unlike alot of bands. >>;

  • Ive seen them in concert twice and plan on making a third trip to see them next year. They have never disappointed yet.

  • ya'll shouldn't be so hard on them :/

all bands have their bad days. i've seen performances of this band where the singer has blown me away with his voice.

true that this wasn't their best performance, but Brent doesn't suck! they just had a bad peformance.

  • the begging was good but when they started to sing it sounded kinda of bad :(

  • damn, i´ve always liked shinedown....BUT I´VE ALWAYS HATED HIS VOICE LIVE!!!!!

  • Ahh..he doesnt sound the same as he does on cd but he's not that bad.^-^

  • Sounds damn good. Weird mike technique though :s, lol. But yeah sounds good!

  • yeah lol agree with ya, weird mic technique...but he is got good voices

  • his voice is the truth

  • It is always disappointing to hear a lead singer live that can't live up to the recorded versions.

  • I don't know what the deal is here, he generally sounds very good. Listen to the song In memory live then compare the versions

  • Like the other guy said, check out his singing, with no mic at all, hes pretty damn awesome.

  • this is so shit!

  • Just so everyone knows, I wasn't making any comparing him to Meatloaf. I can just hear some similarities in his tone and timbre.

  • i love shinedown ... :D

  • He sounds a little raspy due to tons of touring. He's fatter because all the coke he did kept him skinny (coke keeps you really thin).

  • I can't help thinking he sounds a bit like Meatloaf...Anybody else hear it?

  • Hell no...Brent Smith blows Meatloaf out of the water. I honestly still can't figure out how Meatloaf ever made it in the music industry, but then again...look at all the shit they let on the radio these days.

  • Meatloaf is the man...

  • Jyama,he does in a sense .....sounds like "THEMEAT".....lmao!

  • brents voice is going a bit..but they've toured for like 18 months straight...and he informed me they will be touring right up til the summer again...plus he's got his marriage etc..so must be quite tough on his throat!

I'm a big fan of shinedown..and do love them, eric is pretty amazing, but the sound on this show was awful!

  • I'm a huge fan, but I don't like what's happening to Brent's voice. I remember seeing them live in 2005 after Us and Them came out, he was hitting some crazy notes and sounded awesome. Now he sounds used up and tired... He's also much fatter, I wonder if that had any impact.

  • his voice is probably the intensive touring...but he's probably put on weight as he gave up his drug addictions, and well I won't explain drugs..but if you know anything about it you'll know ift stops your hunger to a degree.

  • GOD I HATE ERIC BASS!!!

  • fuk u rioterx4

  • clam down man, i didnt say i hated shinedown, still love them, but Eric Bass is no Brad Stewart, Eric looks like a super ugly chick, its creepy, i wish Jasin and brad were still in shinedown

  • fuckin awesome song and amazing band

  • Comment removed

  • saw them on glasgow on november 7th, absolutely fuckin brilliant. Brents voice is suffering for sure but they tour for 3 months at a time so to be expected. Would still go see them any day of the week

  • I like Shinedown, but I really hope they don't get too popular on the "Top 40" stations. They're getting a bit mainstream, which isn't a bad thing, it's just that I don't want them to start sounding too poppy and generic.

  • what kind of guitar is Zach using?

  • a paul reed smith guitar

  • Paul Reed Smith Hollowbody II, I think.

  • man, brents voice is almost gone.

    he still did awesome though

  • at least he is really singing...

  • u can tell that is live

  • like how they change uo the tempo so it sounds different then it does in the album

  • LOL Ozzie?

  • whats the guitar pciking tool he uses in the intro?

  • @kloaStoawonga It's an EBow.

  • Its called an E-Bow it vibrates the string like a bow (like for a violin I suppose)? Except its meant for the guitar. A tad pricey but def. cool.

  • thank u very much

  • I heard them play at wolverhampton wulfran hall on 10/11/09 and his voice sounded great

  • 3:45 maybe allergies? Song sounded "generic" until I heard it more times. Truly, one has their days and sometimes sound engr might not have been able to catch minor tweeks which could of reflected on Brents singing.

  • Goodbye soul patch

  • truly amazing music :)

    beautiful song....

  • 2:38 to 2:58

    Listen to that!

  • Brent Smith is my hero.

    Nice song.

  • I couldn't agree more.

  • i he looks sick in this video...most of the time he is dead on,and has somuch power and vocal range....everyone has their off days...

  • the lead singer looks a lot different now

  • where is brent's voice? no power, no range. i saw him live a year ago with buckcherry and a7x, and his voice was good (but not AS good as on record). even on Sound of Madness, you can tell he doesnt have the same power and range as on the first two records. shame. Chris Cornell v. 2.0

  • he even said in an interview since he quit drugs, his vocal chords arent numb anymore so he feels everything.

  • is that what it is? shit...i guess good that he quit drugs, and good that now he's aware how he's tearing is vocal cords. too bad that his singing had to suffer for it though.

  • give brent a break! i saw them live last week and they are incredible! we all have off days, and his off days are still amazing!

  • I love the new album, and the song on the album is great......but this is one of the worst vocal performances I have heard for a long time.

    Terrible.

  • idk. i agree that his voice is a bit off in this show, but i still like the performance. i've always been in favor of artists deviating a bit from the recorded song in live shows. It shows creativity IMO

  • Saw them last night, would have been amazing if iit wasn't for the half an hour between songs.

  • really? when they came to my city, they didn't even take breaks. the only "break" they took was when Brent was talking to us

  • watz up with brent's voice he usually sounds awesome not dat he doesnt in diz vid but here he haz a less powerful voice

  • Even if Brent doesn't always hit all the notes he ALWAYS sings with feeling and emotion, which is just as important

  • his technique and control, I think, is the best we've heard all decade and maybe even longer. I think its cause he got fat and he doesnt' have the lungs for it.

  • I saw them in concert in November of last year and it was so much better than this! Seems like they need to be taking a break soon... :/

  • love the suit...saw them live a few months ago... the show rocked! i've been a long time fan probably since they got their start in jax!

  • pretty good

  • at 1:20 brent looks over at the new guy with a look of disgust..

    i wonder why

they should just re-release songs from leave a whisper

crying out, in memory, lost in the crowd, stranger inside

the list could on with songs that they could sale again

  • Your a fucking idiot

  • Um. Zach's not the "new guy"

Zach's been in the band for...a little more then 5 years now? Eric is the newest, and Eric is the one in the purple.

  • we LOVED them at Rockfest They were SPOT-ON on every song!! They were SO worth it!

  • i love shinedown and am seeing them for the third time on the 11th, but brent's singing isn't enjoyable anymore. He hit like none of the high long notes, poor.

  • its from constant touring and hes getting older...y do u think chris cornell doesn;t sing rock nymore? and after rest his voice would be back to more normal

  • dude he's 30... if that's old I've only got 11 years of youth left lol

  • I think they need to take a break from touring for a while. Brent's voice is getting run ragged.

  • I´m a huge Shinedown Fan, but Brents voice ist worn out! They sound so much better on concerts cause they playback the chorus (Brent himself said that in some interviews!) What would you expect after playing about 700 concerts in 2 years - the best voice on earth can not handle that!

  • Do someone have the tab for the solo ?

  • I also think this is shinedown worst performance i saw on tv,I like the band too

  • Dude, Saw Them Last Night. I Wanted To Steal The Bassist's Pants.

  • Yea, Ive saw themin concert and met them twice! and about to do so again on the 23rd of this month! This performance is on JIMMY KIMMEL what do you expect?? and... the sound on these things do NOT capture Brent at ALL! They sound AMAZING live! I like their live shows better, to be honest... And to be able to talk to the boys.. They are SO nice and down to earth! You couldn't say a bad thing about them! :) Kid, u have problems! :) Brents amazing. :)

  • sorry i dont like brents voice live. he doesnt hit the highs in any of his performances. love the cd but wouldn't pay to see them live

  • This si a performance on Jimmy Kimmels' show. Trust me there is more power to this song & to this band & to Brent Smith's performance, if you've ever seen them live. I've said it on various occasions, & will keep saying it Brent Smith is a phenomenal singer whose been blessed by a phenomenal powerful voice that only few singers possess is this day & age.

I'm looking forward to seeing them live @ 'The Palladium' in Dallas on Sunday Oct 11th.

  • It's apparent that those who believe this is a really good live performance have obviously never seen Brent at his best. This is NOT it! I looooooove SD...the SD prior to Atlantic turning them into puppets..not the 'Second Chance' SD...But I've been a fan for many years & I've seen what that man can do...

  • Not their best live performance ever. shinedown fucking rule though!!

  • fat yeah sure whatever i think someone is jealous that they cant do what he does!

  • The next #1 hit. This will be the 4th off this album. The most underrated band around is no longer underrated. I've only been telling people for 7 years. Better late then never.

  • I hear you man... One of the best bands to see in concert too. They work the stage hard. Pain in the grass last yr.(Auburn WA) Smith ran out through the crowd, the hole crowd.... Kick a.. Band...

  • THANK YOU!!! Finally!

  • thats because he quit his addiction to heroin

  • unnecessary

  • he can sing well tho, whats ur beef? dont watch it if u dont like them

  • um It was the thing that makes the wavy sound lol

  • what was Zack holding in his right hand at the beginning?

  • thats an eBow it simulates the stringed instruments of an orchestra

  • anyone else think brent is startin to look like wayne from the movie waynes world?

  • My favorite part? 2:59-3:52

  • tht is not bretts best live performance in the world!!!

  • His name is Brent not Brett..

  • wow ...2:35- 2:43 loooove that part-.

  • good video.. i like shinedown, brent has really good voice.

  • The band always dresses this way. Except for Brent. He usually has black pants on and a black leather jacket. (No matter HOW HOT it is) Anyways, meaningful song, amazing performance, REAL performance, SHINEDOWN FOREVER!!

  • a dean. not sure what kind though

  • it is a dean, a custom with his own logo as the only inlay and custom headstock, looks like a Rhapsody body, but not the fretless 8 or 12 models. he has a couple of one-of-a-kinds already so this is probably another.

  • what ever happened to "apologies to matt damon"

  • pre-recorded drum track at beginning... im assuming its so the orchestrated track stays lined up with the band... i just thought that was interesting.. he was just sitting there doing just the high hat.

  • I'm addicted to this video ever since I watched Jimmy Kimmel the other night. Voice of a god.

  • lol...i seen them in Pikeville Ky a few months back...and they dressed like this for that show...they looked nice as always...Eric actually had a vest and tie and button up shirt on ;) & Brent of coarse has his Black Leather Jacket on...i wish he would wear something diff...hes a nice looking guy...looked like hes has his hair cut some as well....Anyways i thought their performance was gr8!

  • Shinedown had a fantastic performance on Jimmy Kimmel... They looked like what they are...PROFESSIONAL ROCK STARS! Not only did they look great, they rocked out to an amazing song.... Thank you Shinedown....

  • they have always just done wat they want and like. they don't feel they have to dress like "rock stars" to make them cool. they are who they are. also, even bigger factor i would say is they possibly dressed like this as this song is a romantic song brent wrote for his wife. maybe he just wanted to look nice for her.

fyi, at concerts i'm pretty sure everytime i've seen him he has worn a black leather jacket

  • Yeah, Brent almost always wears his leather jacket, but Zach and Eric usually wear stuff like that..

  • Check out Zach's vest. It's a TATCo original from his new clothing line.

  • i love shinedown- but whats up with the suits? i honestly think that these guys are losing their edge... but as a fan i hope that is not true.

  • Have you ever been to one of their concerts? They always wearclothes like that, ;)

  • yes i have been to their concerts (every time they are in AZ), but not since the release of SOM... ive been a fan since the beginning and theyve always had just the typical rock look.

  • no. they never do.

  • Shinedown rocks, love Brent Smith, saw them twice live, once right up front, 2nd row, was awesome! If they ever come back to Indy, I will definitely be there!

  • one of the best songs ive ever heard in my life. i saw them live and they fucking kicked ass. i want to see them again

  • it's one of the weaker songs on the album. Devour, Sound of Madness, Cyanide Sweet Tooth Suicide, The Crow & The Butterfly are all MUCH better songs. Not that this is a bad song, but if you think it's one of the best songs you've ever heard then you must not listen to much music. Shinedown is one of my favorite bands, but still.

  • I can't speak for others but because it's one of my favorite songs, it's because it relates to my life a lot more then say...Cyanide Sweet Tooth Suicide does.

It's one of my favorites however I prefer songs like.. Sin with a Grin, Sound of Madness..

  • this band gives me the urge to puke every time i hear or see them.

  • Ignore the troll this comment is response to.

  • Keep it comin Guys!!! Ur blowin up right before our eyes. IYOK now..... . WAS next.... and Call Me last...

The Sound Of Madness is a magical album that only comes around once in long, long while.

  • Also, maybe Brent's vocals weren't the *best* but they were still amazing.

But Eric and Zach and Barry played AMAZINGLY. The music itself sounded just like the CD version, the vocals not so much.

Brent's voice is amazing. But it sounds better when he's performing live-acoustic shows.

  • i totally agree.... they kept it real and didn't lip sync like some other cowerds do on live tv...

  • I actually never though of it that way..

    You're right,

They could've lip synced but they didn't. They kept it real. :)

  • Fucking love this song. Fucking love this band

    Favorite band ever.

One of my favorite songs ever.

    ...

Zach and Eric and Brent and Barry are amazing.

I almost didn't recognize Barry though.

  • <33333333!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Best performance of IYOK I've ever heard. Love Shinedown more than anything. <3

  • They seem to do a lot better during smaller shows. This performance is ok, but their smaller acoustic sets really showcase the vocals.

  • Huge Shinedown fan. Great version of the song considering how long they have been on tour. Not a big fan of the corporate suit look though. They need to show the tats and rock out on national tv

  • great harmonies by the bassist and guitarist.

  • Ya know I love shinedown, but whats with the suits now? I liked there old look better. And the chorus is sung higher on the album.
