in my opinion ( a person that has raised birds) there is noting wrong with dyeing chicks as pets i agree they are not trinkets but it is not permanent because you are collaring there food source when you dye them is the egg that is how chilean flamingos get there pink color from the high pink pigment from the shrimp they eat
at least that dye isn't toxic. But yeah, that's a living creature, it wasn't really born to be dyed for one day then left in the trash...well tbh it's better than being part of the egg or poultry industry, these little guys havent had the worst lives yet and they got to live in Farm Sanctuary for the rest of their lives
awwww.. I remember when I was 10 My uncle gave me an orange chick.. for Easter actually, hahahaa!! I took take of it for the last 2 months while I was in TX Houston but once I had to come back to CA I couldn't take it with me. :,((((((

it is good that you give them a good homw. u all are amazing. It is good thing that as their new feathers come in they have their true color not the color that someone else wanted them to be just so they would sell better. it dosent matter if they are colored or not when u r walking down the street and you see baby chicks for sale they are so cute it isnt if they are colored that makes them beautiful wonderful hens and roosters it is God who made them beautiful just the way they are!!!!!!

Injecting the egg at 14 days is not illegal. It does not hurt the chicks at all, if anything the hole in the egg actually helps them hatch and causing less stress on the bird. Its the people that buy the animals and don't care for them that is the problem. Its the same as coloring your hair. I have seen plenty of dye jobs on poodles. FYI - franklanguage- cats taste like raccoon and thats why over seas they always leave the feet on so buyers can tell the difference.
It is illegal in many states because it makes most of the chicks throw away pets. Before it was illegal many feral chickens showed up in early summer when they start to become adults.
I was upset to see my local pet store is selling the chicks this year. I hope the people who buy them put some thought into the purchase. If my parents and I lived in the country we'd go in and buy them all and give them a good home. My parents told me it was illegal to dye chicks like that these days. I bet these guys and girls are full grown beautiful birds now. Thank you guys again for all you do.
The dyed chickens taste the same as non dyed and it is a great lesson in life about caring for animals. If you don't take the responsiblity to care for them they will die. Kids winning goldfish at the fair is similar.
hehe.. they're to "dye" for.. hahaa.. haa... Good thing farm sanctuary got them before some stupid people decided it would be "cute" to get them and not know how to care for them properly.
the dye goes away when they grow feathers.my grandma used to dye day old ducks. She would take tubes with different colored water and let them swim lol.we would dry them the best we could and put them back in the warmer none ever had complications
Dyeing chicks doesn't hurt them. The dyes used are normal everyday food dyes and are safe. Dyes are not injected into the actual chicken embryo! Dyes are injected into the white of the egg a few days before hatching (no extra pneumonia risk).
I don't think the problem is with dying the chickens so much as selling them to kids living in a crowded city. That can't end well... That said, perfectly well-intentioned farmers dye chickens around Easter to make tours more festive.
Most of these chicks are cornish cross (the white wings) and are breed for the chicken meat market. They are cheap and plentiful for the wholesaler who dips the birds in a non toxic dye. The birds molt their baby feathers and their adult feathers grow in their regular color (ie: the wings come in first, that's why you see the white wing color). Plenty of cute bunnies, kitties, and puppies subcomb to bad owner neglect too.
I remember getting four silkie chicks years ago that were bathed in food-dye. Nobody wanted them so I took them in. I was pissed that someone would do that to an animal for novelty purposes, but a warm bath washed away all of the color. One of the chickens Snowman, is still with me after 8 years!
what a striking visual experience this video conjures. i wonder if the creators of these works of art even see the beauty in such oddness. why do we have to impose ourselves on animals anyway?
I think you sould amend the title, Animals are not toys. So many parents by an animal for a child because of its media popularity. 101 dalmations - Puppies, Nemo - Clownfish.... animals being mistreated by being raised for only profit, and then given to a shelter and eventually killed because people didn't understand the care. Get your kid a doll or a bike! A pet is not a movie tie in.
well i agree, if infact they were injected with the dye in the formation process, but i dont think thats the case, seeing as how it would be impossible to inject them with red dye, and have there wings turn out white, **pretty sure this was a normal dye job with non toxic animal dye** thats why said dye is so close to the rim of there eyes..like i said this isnt a fact this was just my understanding of it

Jeesus...the chicks are not hurt...they have no vision problems or physical malformation due to the dye...and to those of you who say **oh they were being sold as novelties and would have died a week later** what does the dye job have to do with that? **it happens with or without the dye job** dont get me wrong im not condoning cruelty to animals, just saying all this drama is pointless come on
Clearly, you haven't taken into consideration the fact that this video was taken after being rescued while at the farm sanctuary. And it's not being dramatic, most people who purchase those little chicks would give them to their kids and then end up neglecting them a week after easter ends and forgetting to feed them and they'd end up dead.
They are cute & they look alive & happy. They weren't hurt at all because the ASPCA stepped rescued them from being sold to improper homes as holiday decorations. They would likely not lived more than a few days in someone's NY City apartment. Think of what would have happened if any of them did stay alive long enough to reach maturity. How could they live in a city home? They no doubt would be killed or tossed out. Keep up the drama, maybe after a while more people will get it.
My husband works within two miles of slaughterhouses. You can see feathers along the roads for miles. When there are hurricanes, the pig waste goes everywhere. The smell is indescribable. It is just incredible that more people are not vegan here in NC where we live.

No, Farm Sanctuary is a vegan organization. Their goal is to protect animals from being eaten, basically.
